While the book is written in a narrative format, it layers information about the Carrier tribe and the character of Mary John that leaves one feeling connected to and empathetic towards the plight of this Native American group and indeed all Native American groups. This book is a short, fast read that is worth reading more than once. As a mother myself I empathized with Mary John's statement: "Like most women, I date many of the happenings in my life from the times when my children were born. This book is a short, fast read that is worth reading more than once. As a mother myself I empathized with Mary John's statement: "Like most women, I date many of the happenings in my life from the times when my children were born. And like most women, I do not forget the dates when my children were lost to me." Mary John had 12 children and at the time that her life story was put into words by Bridget Moran, she had 7 living children, 32 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. One of Mary John's goals was to rescue and save the Carrier culture for her descendants, for the Carrier people, and for Canada.
