A really cute Valentine's story with an unusual cast of characters--SLUGS! I thought this was an absolutely adorable story about a smitten girl slug who writes Valentines poems (in slime!) for the slug she loves from across a crowded room--er, garden! Undaunted, she continues to declare her love in various poems around the garden, and he does the same--will they ever find one another??? Totally adorable and I think this would be a hit with a variety of kids--especially those who might not go for the typical Valentine's Day read--the slime helps coat what is really a very sweet love story :-)

Two poetically inclined young slugs in love! What could be more romantic? This adorable, hilarious, and ultimately heartwarming book, perfect for Valentine's Day, follows the story of shy Marylou, who - being terribly enamored of her fellow slug Herbie - sets out to woo him through her poems, written (in slime) on everything from a watering can to a scarecrow's hat. Herbie himself, unsure of the identity of his not-so-secret admirer, begins composing poems of his own, hoping to convince Marylou Two poetically inclined young slugs in love! Herbie himself, unsure of the identity of his not-so-secret admirer, begins composing poems of his own, hoping to convince Marylou to meet him. Unfortunately, his replies keep disappearing, either washed away by the rain, or borne away (in the case of the one written on a hoe) by the gardener. Will Marylou ever see his poetic pleas? Will the lovelorn couple ever find one another...? I can't say, in all honesty, that I am a great lover of slugs (although I'm delighted to learn a new animal adjective, to describe them!), but Slugs In Love managed to overcome my initial resistance to the idea of limacine love. Herbie and Marylou are just so darn cute, with their expressively cocked eye stalks, and their sincere search for one another. Their poems (well, Susan Pearson's poems, really) are such fun to read, and Kevin O'Malley's colored marker and pencil illustrations are a delight to view! All in all, a real winner - perfect for anyone looking for humorous Valentine's Day stories for younger children.

It's a very cute picture book about two slugs, Herbie and Marylou. They write sweetheart notes to each other, trying to find one another. The notes they write either aren't seen or disappear. Herbie finally gets the idea to write a note that Marylou can't miss. This book is around a third grade reading level; it's also good to read aloud to younger children. Very nice illustrations. MaryLou loves Herbie but is too shy to tell him out loud. So begins, a very thoughtful and loving exchange of poems, written on such items as a tomato plant, a scarecrow, a rake, watering can, etc. Will Herbie and MaryLou every meet? A wonderful book to be read at Valentines and every day of the year! Their communication is like an old fashioned personal ad. Very cute! The reason I mention that is, I met my husband, through placing a personal ad in a newspaper 28 years ago.

A very cute story about two slugs who write poems to one another using their slime trails. Not sure how this could possibly be romantic, but I guess even slugs deserve love too. Fun poems that our girls enjoyed finding the rhyming words to.

Slugs in Love is an easy read, but very enjoyable. The pictures on the pages match the descriptions of the sentences. The sentences include rhyming, which adds to the "fun" of the book. I enjoy the "chase" the two slugs encounter. They go to great heights to find one another and fall in love. Slugs in Love is an easy read, but very enjoyable. This is a good book for older children who can sit through longer books. (It is quite text heavy). It can be used to discuss poetry since the two slug main characters write poems. It is also appropriate for Valentine Day reads. Kids both enjoyed it.

Cute concept but the execution is repetitive, and not in that great-for-a-read-aloud way. Instead of rising action/tension, we see the same things happening on most spreads: Marylou writes Herbie a love poem in slime, and Herbie can't figure out who she is. Until, eventually (spoiler), he does. Cute concept but the execution is repetitive, and not in that great-for-a-read-aloud way. Z picked this out herself. Each missed meeting prompted Z to shout at the book, “If you would just ...” as though the characters could respond to her suggestions. Cute rhyming narrative.

So cute! This tale of romance between two slugs is super adorable. I have always had a soft spot for love stories, even ones in picture books. It's one more thing in this culture of appearance.

I thought it was so adorable I ended up reading it to a car full of adults! They couldn't even see the pictures and thought it was adorable... but the pictures up that factor by about twenty! Marylou, what a bold slug woman you are leaving love notes where everyone can see them! The whole writing in your own slime thing is kind of unappealing though, but I guess it's cute in it's own way. You became even more interesting when all of Herbie's friends had never heard of you! How many slugs are in your slug colony that no one knows who you are or even what you look like? You won me over though with your sweet rhymes, and obviously, it worked on Herbie. These two slugs are in love and writes love letters to one another. I thought this book was cute. It was a little cheesy, but definitely cute. I read this out loud in my first grade class, and half the children were making gag sounds whenever love lines were spurted out. It was a fun book to read though, the children enjoyed it. I would use this book if the children has to learn how to write letters. I would also use this book to give children an idea of poetry and rhyming words.

I picked this one for its unique title and because I've gotten other good books from this author. It didn't disappoint, although I liked it better than my DS who's 3. Girls might enjoy it more since it's a love story with poetry. The idea that they are both looking for each other and never seem to be able to find each other is so cute. Susan Pearson, Slugs in Love (Marshall Cavendish, 2006) Cute little tale of a slug who becomes infatuated with another slug, and lets him know with poems scribbled around the barnyard. Good intro to rhythm and rhyme for the kiddies, with an amusing mistaken-identity subplot tossed in for good measure. You'll like this one as much as your kids will. *** ½ Susan Pearson, Slugs in Love (Marshall Cavendish, 2006) Cute little tale of a slug who becomes infatuated with another slug, and lets him know with poems scribbled around the barnyard.
