The Mountain by Elvi Rhodes is an interesting book. I have read other books by her but this one surpasses all. I enjoyed it from page one. So many characters but Jake and Beth are my favourites. Mrs Drake, Sally Roland and Patrick although secondary characters were part of my favourites characters. Let’s not forget about grumpy ill tempered Will. Ugh! I love how Beth enjoys reading and has a passion for teaching children. I am a teacher and I was impressed by her enthusiasm and eagerness towards knowledge. This book is fit for a movie! It deserves 5 stars from me. I enjoyed this book so much. I read it within two days. Whenever I read a book, I try to find the story behind the book title and I got a perfect plot behind the name “The Mountain“. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.

I really enjoyed reading this little tale of old Yorkshire. A touch of nostalgia and evoked memories of my time there. Quite eerie reading about the smallpox pandemic...talk of quarantine and isolation...sign of the times in today's world. I really enjoyed reading this little tale of old Yorkshire. Historical drama set in Cumbria around the building of the Carlisle to Settle railway and the famous viaduct. The characters were great and the story interesting.

Really enjoyed this book as a Yorkshire lass born and bred. Having seen the viaduct many times and taken the steam train over it was so interesting to learn how it was built

I didn't think I would enjoy this book, but I did. It's a book that my Mum bought and gravitated to my bookshelf. Thought I'd give it a go before releasing it. There are two novels in one volume here. THE MOUNTAIN is the better of the two, in my opinion. It's the story of Jake Tempest (should have been in an American Spy thriller!), who finds work building a railway and falls in love with a married woman. It's predictable, but we all like happy endings, and occasionally obstacles are removed a bit too easily. However, it was a good read and passed away a few rainy evenings. OPAL is also well written and not quite so predictable. However, I really couldn't warm to Opal, the heroine of the story. Although it was kind of the point, she deserved and caused everything that happened to her, and (without giving it away), I thought she was very, very fortunate that the author also likes happy endings.
