This, the second book in the Revelations series by Nathaniel Connors, I found to be slightly better than the first book. The first book, for my taste, focused far too heavily on the romantic life of the book’s main character, Jonathan, and his other, overly emotional connections to his friends. This book features love and romance as well, but only in passing. The first book, for my taste, focused far too heavily on the romantic life of the book’s main character, Jonathan, and his other, overly emotional connections to his friends. This book features love and romance as well, but only in passing. Which is just as well, considering one of the great romances in this book is between Jonathan’s grown son, Alex, and the woman who acted as Alex’s mother and raised him from the age of eight, when both of his parents were killed by a supernatural murderer hellbent on ending his family line. I don’t think I could have stomached anymore talk than what there was about how much Alex and Sarah loved one another and sexed each other up every chance they got. As Alex’s little brother, Jason, the only person in the book who seemed to get how wrong this relationship was put it, “it’s sick!” Moving on from that, after intentionally focusing on the story of Alex and his very, very retch worthy love affair, the book and the land of family’s origin focuses its attention instead upon his sister, Jen. She thankfully restrains herself from having sex with any close family members, and is instead a bit of a loner and social outcast. It is from this point forward, when Jen is ‘chosen by the land and the sword’, that the book gets interesting. The writing up until Jen coming into her own felt rather rushed and thin to me. I think this first part of the book could have been a lot better and a stronger hand from the editor should have guided Mr. Connors in fleshing out these scenes and passages a bit further. Some of the dialogue had the same problem and bordered on being painfully chit chatty. This is why I can’t give this book a higher ranking than the three stars I’ve given it on Goodreads and Amazon. There is, however, a great storyline here and much room for this series and the world it is set in to grow. I was, for example, very impressed with the appearance and depiction of Lucifer at the end of the book, as well as the revelations made about him and the family. I could easily see a series of books set in the distant past, instead of the future, with an medieval theme being born out of this storyline. To my mind, this might even work better than the futuristic science fiction setting of this book. These books don’t feel to me like science fiction. In conclusion, I’m not giving up on this series or writer, even though this series as so far not blown me away. I think Mr. Connors has good ideas and does a wonderful job in the areas of writing action and gore.
