The descriptions were so minimal, and the writing felt more distant than the first book. A 2.75 rating for me.

I won a free copy of this ARC to review. This book is a fantastic end to the duology. All the magic and fantastic characters from Into The Crooked Place are in this book, plus we get to know the characters even better! Depth of the individual struggles of the characters are what really crowned this book for me.

CITY OF SPELLS is a stunning conclusion to an enthralling YA fantasy duology. The book plunges us into the story where we left off after the first with Wesley captured by Zekia, and Tavia, Saxony, and Karam trying to band themselves together and move forward with the plans they know they need to come up against the Kingpin, Ashwood. In a world where magic is rare and regulated, Kingpins and their underbosses rule the city with buskers dealing in the illicit trade on the streets. With the new magic Ashwood has in hand, he is completely corrupting the cities and controlling everyone with the removal of their free will using the Loj elixir. Backed into corners and fighting to stay alive and protect the places where they live, the four must gather themselves, figure out who they are and who they want to be, and lay it all on the line. What I loved: First, I want to say how much I loved and appreciated the plot summary of the first book that comes at the beginning of this one. This helps the reader launch right into this fast-moving story. The book follows the characters closely, and while they feel broken and scattered, the story moves in a similar way, becoming stronger as they do. Ultimately, with the twists and turns I did not see coming, this story ended up blowing me away. The story is told in multiple perspectives from the four primary characters of the first book and also Zekia. Each is distinct and highly compelling, making this a series that is driven by the characters. The romances are also really fantastic as a result, and I loved all of their relationships, banter, and passion. Each of the main characters really comes into their own in this book, defining themselves and who they want to be. This world is also fascinating, and I loved the way it evolves and develops as we learn more about magic and its control as well as form alliances with new characters. Prophecies and foresight have led to wild decisions that seem a gamble in terms of how they will all come together, and the ending really blows the reader away. Final verdict: Compelling, enthralling, and fantastically plotted, CITY OF SPELLS is a stunning conclusion to an engaging YA fantasy duology. Highly recommend for fans of SIX OF CROWS, THE COURT OF MIRACLES, and THRONE OF GLASS. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

There aren't enough stars in the WORLD to give to this book, oh my god. From the very first page, I adored INTO THE CROOKED PLACE, and CITY OF SPELLS was a long-awaited book that had me gripped from the first page as well. Usually, I'm hit-and-miss with second books, especially when the first ends in a fight, and it's fantasy, but CITY OF SPELLS didn't have that cliche feel to it. I usually don't take to gathering a rebellion sort of type for second books but *God* this book outdid itself. Wesley, Saxony, Tavia, and Karam: I would die for you. All of you. With all of your messiness, imperfections, annoyances, flaws, histories, and beautiful banter and relationships with each other. These four led me on a wild tornado of a journey full of loss, love, plot twists, family reveals, and literally anything and everything. This duology has it all: childhood friends to lovers, f/f as one of the main relationships, found family, angst, hurt, soft moments. This crooked crew gripped my heart and will never let go. This isn't a story to forget. This is one that'll stay on my shelves and never be forgotten. It was magic incarnate. It was a dream; it felt like home in books. I don't even have proper words to formulate the plot because I just have so many overwhelmed messy emotions for this book, and every single one of them is amazing. The only sad part was that it ended, and there aren't more in the series. However, I want to write about Wesley and Dante. Their dynamic pierced me through, and hit home a lot, the way Wesley was enticed and reeled in, unbeknownst to him, only to fight back, and rise up, to seek revenge on his own ruined past. CITY OF SPELLS sews up torn bonds, heals open wounds, and brings closure to the most torn stories that scatter the pages. I am utterly in love. Wesley Thornton Walcott *is* the newest addition to my comfort characters, and YES he has father issues, and YES that's My Shit, and YES he's totally in love with his best friend and won't say anything about it, and YES, he's self-deprecating whilst balancing dizzying confidence and arrogance. I love him so, so much. I love the entire gang. I love, love, LOVE them. INTO THE CROOKED PLACE duology is happily nestled in my heart forever.

I read Into the Crooked Place in 2019 as an ARC I won in a Goodreads giveaway. I was super excited about it as I adored Christo’s first novel, To Kill A Kingdom. I was very interested to see where the story would go after an ending like that! I will say that there is no need to go back and reread the first book in the duology unless you really want to as the author gives enough context clues and recap to jog your memory (I had planned to reread the first book, but wasn’t able to squeeze it in ah I read Into the Crooked Place in 2019 as an ARC I won in a Goodreads giveaway. I will say that there is no need to go back and reread the first book in the duology unless you really want to as the author gives enough context clues and recap to jog your memory (I had planned to reread the first book, but wasn’t able to squeeze it in ahead of time and I had no issues even after reading the first book over a year ago). The standout features of this installment are the plot, pacing, and character work. Though the plot is relatively straightforward, get Wesley back and defeat the Kingpin, there are enough twists and turns and shocking events to keep the reader on their toes. One thing I really liked about the story was the pacing. It was a good balance of quiet moments and fast-paced action scenes. I especially enjoyed the acceleration of events as I approached the end of the book. The characters had a lot to deal with and overcome, but especially Saxony and Zekia. Saxony is caught between what should be her political position and her family. There are so many things that she wants to do to be able to help defeat the Kingpin, but is held back by her lack of official power. Will she follow the rules or will she take matters into her own hands? Though I like Karam, Tavia, and Wesley, I think Zekia is probably my favorite character, which may be an unpopular opinion, I’m not sure. I was really fascinated by her journey throughout the series. Is she a villain or a victim of circumstance? You’ll have to read City of Spells to find out! *Thank you to Book Terminal Tours, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review! I was so excited to take part in another blog tour!*

I ordered for a Love spell. 2 days later in the morning around 09:34AM, I was totally shocked on how my Husband called me telling me how much he missed me. His spell worked on me so fast and my husband has been so loving, Natural and I'm having a happy marriage after using his love spell. Also Karam’s character arc was EVERYTHING, she went from someone I really didn’t love to one of my favorite characters by the end of this series and I can truly appreciate a story that can do that. Overall, this was an epic conclusion to the Into the Crooked Place duology, full of magic and turns and a ton of growth overall. Destined for fans of Six of Crow like stories with neat, tidy endings.

The depth of damage that some of these characters experienced both physically and mentally was written so well and I really appreciated that they tried to support each other in understanding that it was okay to not be automatically okay after what they've been through.  There was even potential for some healing at the end. Though I love that this is a duology (the perfect series length in my opinion) I also would love to see more and more of this complex magical world play out because the different magic and spells were such a draw in this story.

Because the first book already introduced the world and our characters, City of Spells doesn't require as much time setting up the plot--get allies and take down the Kingpin. Despite a fairly straight-forward plot, there are enough twists and revelations in the book to make this such a good read; I couldn't put it down. I can't help but praise Christo for the ending of City of Spells like I praised her for the ending of Into the Crooked Place: it was so good, maybe even better than its predecessor's. I greatly enjoyed City of Spells and would recommend the duology.

This is a series I really enjoyed. I know people down voted the first book saying it was a cheap imitation of Six of Crows (which the greatest book ever) or The Gilded Wolves but people should give this a chance and you can see from the reviews on the second book, it's worth reading. This second book is short only 350 pages so the pace is fast which is good. There is no filler and the quieter moments, especially between Wesley and Tavia are some of the best bits of the books. I know people down voted the first book saying it was a cheap imitation of Six of Crows (which the greatest book ever) or The Gilded Wolves but people should give this a chance and you can see from the reviews on the second book, it's worth reading. I cried, I laughed and I felt myself being in the book. It is rare for me to feel like this, but I simply felt part of what they were doing. An epic ending which made my heart stop and then burst with happiness.

a solid conclusion to “into the crooked place“. I actually enjoyed this book more than the first, and the first was fun. Tavia is my girl and I could have read an entire book solely about her. I feel like she shines in this book. 4-4.5 stars

Thank you Macmillan for the free arc via Netgalley. I enjoyed this sequel better than the first book. The good vs evil fight was fun. The romance was interesting.
