The recipes are simple. That's about the best I can say about it. There are some classic Southern recipes here, but by no means does it really cover what I think most people would call the greatest hits of Southern cooking, and there's plenty in here that isn't actually Southern. I suppose this could appeal to people who want simple and relatively quick recipes with acceptable outcomes, but I'd strongly recommend either picking up old Southern Living cookbooks at a used bookstore or trying some The recipes are simple. I suppose this could appeal to people who want simple and relatively quick recipes with acceptable outcomes, but I'd strongly recommend either picking up old Southern Living cookbooks at a used bookstore or trying some of the better, "fancier" Southern cooking cookbooks that have come out in the last 5 - 10 years. The old Southern Living annual cookbooks will give you better recipes (more of them, too) without sacrificing the simplicity.

I really enjoyed this cookbook. The chapters have funny names like Butter My Butt & Call Me A Biscuit ! The recipes are easy to follow and include ingredient you have on hand. The recipes are all labeled for DF dairy free, GF gluten free, NF nut free, and V vegetarian & vegan. Some of our family favourites so far are Blue Cheese & Bacon Deviled Eggs - have just enough blue cheese to make them tasty without being overpowering and the bacon gives them added flavour & crunch. Garlic and Rosemary Pork Tenderlion - I made this in the slow cooker and it was amazing. It had great flavour and so tender you could cut it with a fork. Peanut Butter Chocolate Shake - this is by far one of the best milkshake recipes I have found. It's rich and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. Next time we are going to add pieces of Reese peanut butter cups to make it even better. The family stories throughout the book are heartwarming and give you glimpse into the author's lives. I was given a complimentary copy of this cookbook from the publisher.

I love cookbooks -- but this is one of the best I've ever used. Pam and Brittany's stories add a warm, personal touch that fits a southern cookbook. Though, I do appreciate that the stories aren't overwhelmingly long. I could get lost in a story and forget to cook! I've made four recipes from this cookbook so far, and each one has been easy to follow and uses "regular" grocery store ingredients. I like not having to hunt down hard-to-find ingredients. I don't have food allergies or sensitivities, but I like that recipe alterations are provided for those who need them.

Ran away for a week before Christmas and went to New Orleans. A highlight of the trip was the morning spent at the New Orleans Cooking School, learning how to make grits the way I guarantee I'll make them again. And the idea that I would say "grits" and "make them again" in the same sentence comes as quite a shock to me. I picked this book up as part of my grief at leaving NOLA, but quickly found that it was more than worth helping me recover. Some great recipes, and after the cooking school I actually believe I have the ability to make them. It's not that they are difficult recipes, but its just that all those New Orleans spices and flavors can be intimidating. This book will fix that! Traded the ebook for the print so I can spill things on it.

I loved the stories Pam and Brittany told about the recipes, they made me feel like I was right there with the family laughing, talking and eating. The recipes were easy to follow, the ingredients were everyday staples (with a few specialty items thrown in). As I was reading I kept saying "Ooh I want to try this one and this one too" all through the sections I found numerous recipes that I will make for my family. Can't wait to be re-united with some of my favorites in an updated version.

I married a southern guy Being from Pa I was raised with Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, certainly never anything southern. Marrying a man from Louisiana never changed my cooking mind. Until I found this cookbook. He would go back home and his Mom would cook jambalaya, grits, black eyed peas, etc. I always thought, ick. After reading thru this book I am more than willing to try to make recipes my husband might drool over. Some do sound yummy! Interesting The cookbook has great stories and a real Southern feel and the recipes seem delicious and simple to make but for people who didn’t grow up with Southern food as their local cuisine, the lack of photos of the finished food might be a problem.

I think this cook book is amazing! I could never begin to pick a favorite dish. I love the family stories that are in here as well. I love that these recipes use ingredients that I already have on hand. I can not wait to continue trying even more of these recipes.

I can't say enough good things about this cookbook. Growing up in the South, it's great to see these awesome twists on a lot of my old favorites. I've since moved away from family and friends there, so it's been a trip down memory lane making some of these recipes already and reminiscing on them, as well. Not to mention, I'm lactose intolerant, so it's great that every recipe is easily labelled and offers alternatives for me to exclude dairy from the ingredients.
