I can't believe that this is the 12th book in this series and I am still enjoying it as much as I did the first one. Fortune is back in Sinful after leaving the CIA, ready to start her civilian life with her wonderful friends. But even as a civilian, with Gertie and Ida around, her life will remain as exciting and crazy as it ever was. Laugh out loud humour, unceasing action, a smart, intelligent plot and a fantastic writer. I highly recommend this book, this series and this author! Fortune Redding vanquished the terrorist who had targeted her for death. She has decided that she likes her life and the people in Sinful, and had retired from the CIA. She has plans to become a Private Investigator and until she has her license, well . . . Anyway, on her first day home in Sinful there is a . . . murder. Shocking, huh? Welcome home, Fortune! Local Boone Carre, aka Hooch, is a card carrying A--hole. He is a drunk, a cheater and has stiffed anyone he ever did business with. The man had no shortage of people who would like to see him six feet under and one of those people is sweetheart, Ally, Fortune's first real girl friend. Well, Carter may want Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie to stay the heck out of this, but, Fat Chance. They know that Ally would never hurt a fly, but in order to clear her name they need to find the real murderer. As they investigate, they find that Hooch has been shooting his mouth off about coming into a lot of money. Would someone kill him for a shot at his fortune?

Reel of Fortune by Jana Deleon is the 12th book in the Miss Fortune Mystry series. Reel of Fortune by Jana Deleon was another madcap adventure now that Fortune has "retired" to Sinful. There is always something to do in Sinful and with Gertie along you know that it won't go as planned. The threesome have a murderer to catch to save Ally and her reputation. Fortune’s secrets are revealed to everyone and she’s free to live her best life. Plus, the ridiculous stunts are just so funny. Skydiving and Gertie? And Carter doesn’t try to stifle who Fortune is. He wants to protect her and keep her safe, but he trusts her decisions, even when he doesn’t like them. I’m curious to see what happens in the next chapter of their relationship.

After my disappointment with Change of Fortune, I approached this one hesitantly but it ended up demonstrating all the humor and fun of the earlier books in the series. I forgot how much I love these characters. Fortune still gets a little emotionally overboard for my tastes and her relationship with Carter needs a new outlet because now that they're dating and communicating(ish), the tension kind of leaves the relationship. But I love what she did to his truck. There was also a possibility for a romantic relationship to develop with a law enforcement officer. But, Fortune’s propensity to get in the middle of dangerous situations might make their dating impossible. She needed to set the record straight about her true identity with her new friends and town folks. She quickly found out people in small towns have their own way of sizing up newcomers. Life on the bayou became more complicated when one of the residents was murdered. No one was beyond becoming a suspect even the sweet little lady Fortune had befriended. Of course, she and her new friends came to the rescue and decided to solve the mystery themselves. Reel of Fortune is sometimes witty with senior women taking on adventures and detective work that only these feisty women could accomplish. I found the novel refreshing and captivating!

Another hit out of the park - er, bayou for Jana Deleon! Ally’s in trouble and the terrible trio is off and running. Everybody loves to hate Hooch, but some people really aren’t even worth killing. These Miss Fortune books are the funniest, laugh-out-loud murder mysteries you will ever read! Jump in anywhere in the series for a great time.

4 Stars! Reel of Fortune is book 12 in A Miss Fortune Mystery series. So far, I have been listening to all of the books back to back and I'm not quite ready to stop. I recommend reading/listening to these books in order since each book builds upon the prior book's story and it makes it much more entertaining and enjoyable to go in order. I'm sure you could still enjoy these books as standalone but it won't be the same. Reel of Fortune starts a whole new life for Fortune. She is finally out of the CIA and has returned to Sinful to begin her life. She lets the townspeople in on her real identity and of course receives mixed reactions. In this book she has to start figuring our what to do with her life now that she is a civilian. Of course, nothing stays quiet in Sinful for long. This time, there is a murder and Ally is at the top of the suspect list even though everyone knows sweet, innocent Ally could never murder anyone. Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie jump right into investigation mode to try to solve the murder before it gets pinned on the wrong person. If you like books with a big dose of humor, this is the series for you. I have found myself laughing out loud too many times to count. The same narrator reads for the whole series. She typically does a good job but this time she made errors such as incorrect words read, using the wrong character name, and her pronunciation was a bit off. It surprised me. I do like that her voices are consistent from book to book.

Just hope it isn't going the way of others and getting a bit stale.

This is a transition story (no spoilers) and I was expecting Fortune's life to kick into the transition faster. So, even though I was disappointed we didn't see immediate progress, she (Gertie and Ida Belle) hit the ground running, literally. I had the usual laughs and enjoyed the story. One thing that I love about the Miss Fortune Mystery series is that I can always take a break and dive back into it without feeling the need to reacquaint myself with the all the characters. To me, this series is like a warm hug or a hot cup of tea during a cold night. It's satisfying, enjoyable, and a pure delight. You'd think these stories would get formulaic and boring after a while (after all, this is the 12th book!), yet Deleon always makes the story interesting and humorous. Plus, Fortune is still growing as a person, as she comes to realize that Sinful is a place she can belong, along with people whom she loves and cares for. As usual, Ida is the level-headed one of the trio, while Gertie is, well, Gertie. I'm always worried Gertie and her antics would become too much for me and that I'd grow to hate her. But nope, I love Gertie the way Ida loves her. With wariness, exasperation, hopelessness, and a hint of warmth. Carter puts it very well: "And yet," Carter said, "you always appear to come out on the short end of things when the three of you get together." "That's because I'm a warrior," Gertie said. "You know, charge first, ask questions later." Oh, sweet Gertie, that is not a good thing to be proud of... But what I truly loved about this book (and what made it 5 stars instead of 4), is that this story focuses on Ally and Fortune's friendship. I loved the way Deleon handled the issue, and I was very pleased to see the lack of usual toxicity of some female friendships that occur in other novels. Fortune stuck by Ally and made sure to have her back, even though she knew this would put her on the opposite side of Carter. (I swear, if I didn't already love Fortune, I'd fall in love with her after that beautiful, well-placed kick!) To sum it up without giving too many spoilers, here's a wonderful quote from Fortune: "I frowned. I hated when the man I had strong feelings for was also the biggest obstacle in the way of helping a friend. It sometimes felt like my constant state of existence in Sinful was being torn between two obligations. Oh well. One of those obligations was looking at having her future destroyed. The other was looking at being annoyed for a while. Guess which one trumped." Yesss, Fortune! Say it louder for those in the back!!! And what really, really, REALLY made me happy was how Deleon handled the tension between Fortune and Carter. There was no angst or unnecessary drama. Both parties understood that they had reasons for acting the way they did, and they talked it out together without any mistrust or anger. The maturity of the characters (despite the crazy shit they get into accidentally) is mainly why this series is one of my favorites. And before I end this review... I want to drop the best quote I've ever seen: "Some say the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom," Gertie said. "I think the fear of women is the beginning of wisdom. At least for men."
