Interesting angsty story. A lot of angst and drama. Veronica lost her sister and best friend and has been living in grief and feeling nothing ever since. She has parents that would rather it have been her that died and she is staying with her Grandmother at the beach and her Grandmother just wants her to get better and act normal again. Devlin Monroe notices her, he is older than her and seems dangerous. He shows up everywhere she goes and makes her feel things, but he is also pushy and commanding Interesting angsty story. ***Book 2 & duet: 4.5 stars*** So, the only reason I didn't give this duet 5 stars is because both stories were short, pretty much novella-length, and I don't think it's fair to judge a novella like I would a full-length novel. However, this one was thisclose to being five stars: the story was that quick, that engrossing, and that exciting of a read. I never thought I’d find a reason beyond the killing, but she gives me hope. Hope that one day, I might somehow redeem myself. If I could just cradle her, protect her from men like me, I could escape the shadows that haunt me. Devlin is my kind of anti-hero: alpha, dominant, and obsessive. He isn't a good man, but he isn't pure evil, either. Truthfully, all things considered, he never really stood a chance in this life to be a good guy. He could be a hero, though, and that's what he ends up being for Veronica: her own personal hero. I didn't need to be convinced of their connection, because it was clear from early on the kind of hold she had over him without even trying. Their age difference- he's in his early thirties, she's nineteen- stopped even mattering at some point, because a detail like that is trivial compared to what Veronica and Devlin go through together. Furthermore, Veronica is wise beyond her years. She's loyal and determined, the kind of fierce personality that she needs to be to navigate her way through the darkness all around her. I really liked Veronica, because even when she was being immature and ridiculous, she was relatable. There are infinite capsules, moments in time, that understand us better than we understand ourselves. They whisper so softly, touch and leave healing marks over the gaping holes. That’s what it’s like between Devlin and me. I comfort his pain and he shoulders mine. A dark kind of peace. This is undoubtedly Devlin and Veronica's story, but the other characters were almost as important to me. I wanted so badly for Brand to find his place in this world and to let go of some of the guilt in his life. I wanted Tiffany to learn to live, and I wanted to figure Paris out. But most of all, I wanted Veronica and Devlin to finally carve out a life together. I truly believed that if they had each other, that would be enough. That doesn't mean I'd turn away a chance to learn more about the other's stories, though! There are some triggers for past trauma in this book, as well as some situational violence, but none of it is over the top. Really, it’s the story of damaged but not evil people who are simply trying to overcome the sins of their fathers to create a life of their own while learning to live with themselves. I’d honestly recommend these two books to anyone.

This was a fabulous read. I’ve read two other books by this author that I enjoyed but this is definitely my favourite. I literally inhaled in word for word. Veronica Day is struggling after a tragic incident leaves her devastated. She’s pretty much living day to day with the help of her grandmother . When Veronica meets Devlin he turns her life around in more ways than one. She knows she should stay away from him but that’s easier said than done. Such a great read. 4.5 stars! (will review the duet together) This book was everything I needed right now: quick, suspenseful, edgy, and surprisingly good. It definitely went off the rails towards the end, but you know what? I didn’t care. I don’t need fiction to be believable all the time, especially if the main characters are as intriguing as they were in this one. Plus, the crazy parts really proved what each character was made of, so that made it all worth it. I’ll definitely be continuing, and I’m hoping that (v 4.5 stars! Didn't like how heroine doesn't want her sister to be with a "dark and dangerous" guy, because that's not normal. But she herself is with another "dark and dangerous" guy, but since she's the Heroine that's totally ok. And why did they move to Romania? Do they speak the language? Where are they staying? Not really my thing. Everything felt flat. No connection between Heroine and Hero. Lacking depth. And of course Heroine has to be 19 (Hero around 30, don't know) and a virgin. Sigh. A few details about the story. Veronica Day is a young woman. She became very troubled after dealing with a tragedy. Deciding to visit Kill Devils Hill will bring her close to a VERY sexy, dark, brooding, dangerous man call Devlin Monroe. He is bent on saving her but will he be a KNIGHT or THE MONSTER?? If you like intriguing and suspenseful reads with a touch of the dark side like me; this is definitely a book for you.

Another new-to-me author that blew me freaking away. I didn't know what Deadly Persuasion was about before reading it. Veronica's unable to accept the fact that her sister is gone forever; dead. Incapable of living life without her, she lives her days one at a time, with little excitement or change. At least that's how she lived until Devlin entered her life. This book will keep you guessing up until the last chapter. Yes, literally the last chapter. It's intense, dark at times, and is unputdownable.

This was a captivating story and my first exposure to N. Heinz's work, but I felt many more details could have been added to flesh out the characters and plot more. I was left with a lot of questions and found the HFN ending very abrupt and somewhat bizarre, so I am not sure whether a second story is planned or not. There is a preview at the end of this novella of a story coming in 2019, but it doesn't seem to relate to this book (although it might?), so I am really confused as to whether to expect a continuation or not. I liked the main characters, Veronica and Devlin. Veronica was down to earth--unfocused and a bit lost in dealing with the death of her sister, but I liked being in her head. Devlin showed up wherever she was, but there was really no explanation given to why or how that happened. What made him instantly obsessed with her? On the other hand, I am drawn to possessive and jealous heroes, so I really liked Devlin despite not understanding his motivations. Also, what did Devlin do when he wasn't doing the odd job for his father? Was he a man of leisure? The supporting characters were also just weird to me. I liked Brand the most, but never really understood how he and Devlin knew each other well enough for the way the book ended. And who is Paris? Veronica's family was unlikable, and I wanted to better understand why her parents treated her the way they did as no explanation was ever presented. Her grandmother wasn't much better in how she treated Veronica, either, despite spending the summer together as a "get away" and having done so for the past ten years. And then there was evil incarnate in the form of Slade. What the heck made him do the things he did? What happened to his wife? Was she literally or figuratively tied up? There were other details mentioned in the book, too, like the wall that needed repaired--what was the point of that? So, while I was entertained by the story, I really wanted more details, especially regarding the plot twist toward the end. I'm not mentioning anything specifically about that because I don't want to spoil anything for others, but I was very frustrated with how the events were just thrown out there and then boom, book over. I really hope Ms. Heinz has a second installment planned for this story and some of these details are addressed. The story was certainly interesting and I like the writing style enough that I will read more of her work, especially if she continues with the J/P type of hero.

Its quotes like this that had me lol-ing all over the place because she was the most basic rich girl character ive ever read. Nothing was special about her, but she kept telling herself that she was the black sheep because she didnt do the 'normal teenage stuff' like dating and going to parties. Can authors stop doing this?!!? Why are 98% of heroine MC's written to be uncomfortable at parties or clubs?!? Cause they all have to be pure wall flowers for the H's attention?! And now to Hero. Oh dear, this guy was toxic from the beginning. His 'over the top possessiveness' was not sexy or endearing. In the beggining he tells the heroine... "You really need to loosen up more, have some fun." Does that not ping any Brett Kavanugh vibes from anyone?!?! Thats what boys say when they try to get uncomfortable women into bed, only to then blame them for 'blue balls.' Like, seriously. I know others have liked it, but if you're looking for the next great read, this is FOR SURE not it.
