Ehhhhh, this one wasn't my favourite. It fell a bit flat BUT was still kickass and enjoyable so I can't give it any less than 3. I'm really enjoying growing with our main character too, it feels a lot better when I'm not reading about a literal 12 year old tbh. Refer back to my review on book one as to why I won't be writing reviews for the books in this particular series. Ehhhhh, this one wasn't my favourite. I CANNOT EVEN RIGHT NOW. WHAT WAS THAT ENDING??!! WHAT WHAT WHAT. I glare at everyone who told me this was a good series. I glare and I cry. It is freaking brilliant but...but.... I HAVE FEELS, OKAY? AND THEY ARE BEING HURT AND MY BRAIN IS EXPLODING WITH THE BEST PLOT TWIST IN THE UNIVERSE!! AFJSDFKALDS I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. That last page. The wicked cliffhanger. Okay, okay, I'll actually review the book. But just know that this has been the bestest so far. I give it 4.5-stars only because I thin I CANNOT EVEN RIGHT NOW. WHAT WAS THAT ENDING??!! Okay, okay, I'll actually review the book. But just know that this has been the bestest so far. I give it 4.5-stars only because I think they're going to get even better and I need somewhere to rate higher. The writing is even better than usual and the action scenes seem tighter and faster. There's a lot more bantering dialogue int his one (as opposed to the last). Of course they rescue Skulduggery from the Faceless Ones sort-of-dimensional-hell. That's kind of obvious...but gosh does he come back a little loopy. Unhinged? Yes. He is just a little darker and more insane. I'm very curious about his family though. What happened to them? Oh and about his face, I wouldn't (view spoiler)[ feel right if he had an actual face and wasn't the skeleton anymore. DON'T DO IT CHINA. (hide spoiler)] . The humour is just priceless. I laughed OUT LOUD so much. Valkyrie also has huge character development. She's not without Skulduggery for a long time, but she still seems to grow without him. I like how there is no rescuing of Valkyrie Cain. SHE WILL KICK YOUR BUTT BY HERSELF. It's so admirable. She is one of my favourite protagonists in the world. although I do wonder how she can exist with no sleep. It is a wonder. - Tanith is awesome and omg, there is a torture scene that I just about freaked over where (view spoiler)[ they NAIL TANITH TO A FREAKING CHAIR. I was turning pages so fast. It was awful. (hide spoiler)] - I actually forgot who Wreath was, but he's the necromancer. From somewhere for something. Ugh. Apparently he's teaching Valkyrie necromancy, I just can't for the LIFE of me remember his context. Google here I come. - I love Finbar. He is hilarious. And stupid. But hilarious. - Also Fletcher is adorable. I thought he was annoying, but his annoyingness is growing on me. I hope he stays. - Dusk needs to be dead. Well, he's undead. So dead again? Please? - Billy-Ray Sanguine is HILARIOUS. He's such a psycho and a villain and I hate him, but at the same time, he makes me laugh. I appreciate a villain with awesome humour. - KENSPECKLE. NOOOOOOOOOO. - I'm sorry but not sorry. There is just no warmth in my heart for Thurid Guild. - I love Val's parents. I wish she could be with them more....although, then again, I don't. I love her saving the world. But I'm curious about when her reflection is going to do something darstardly. Also it's so cute how (view spoiler)[ she's going to be a big sister!!! (hide spoiler)] As you can see, there's a LOT of characters. I didn't even mention them all. I'm exhausted. I do have a hard time keeping up with everyone. Basically, this is the BEST book so far. It has the bestest plot, the greatest plot twists. There's a lot of murder and mayhem and people die bloodily and it's sad and scary. The stakes are ramping up even HIGHER and...it's still funny. Anyone who can squeeze in dry humour into the mayhem of the world being eaten by monsters and exploded with bombs deserves a huge medal. Also Derek Landy's dedications are hilarious. WHERE IS THE NEXT BOOK? I NEED IT.

When you need lightweight fantasy craziness with ultra-violence, wit and nemeses who just keep on coming back, book after book, your two best options are Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books and Derek Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant novels. The Fowl has gone off the boil (I haven't bothered with the latest one) so that leaves Landy and the Skeleton Detective as possessors of the field. Except Pleasant is stuck in another dimension with a bunch of Gods that appear to have escaped from a Lovecraft story. ANGRY NOTE: How could you end Faceless Ones like that, Derek?! With Skulduggery sucked into the Faceless Ones World?! You've got to be kidding me!? It's official; this series is awesome. Oh yeah; 3D equipped with fantastic HD as well. The action senses, as usual, are well choreographed and well written. (Well, what do you expect from 3D and HD writing?) I wasn't surprised to find that this book was going to be darker than the other books in the series. Here are my few theories: Theory no. 1: Dark Days. It's in the name. Duh! Theory no. 2: Val's growing up, so are Derek's audience. It's exactly what happened to Harry Potter. And it will happen to most series. I can only imagine what the last book in the series is going to be like... If you were to ask me "Who's your favourite character?" I honestly have to think about it. With Skulduggery is the best skeleton EVER, Valkyrie being a Mini-Ninja, Fletcher being charming/annoying-in-a-cute-way, Tanith being a complete trouble maker (I love that!), Ghastly being such a deer, Billy-Ray being pychalogicly derange, and Scapegrace being stupid. Oh, how I love them all! So far, this is the best SP book yet!

Honestly everyone needs to read this book for the ending. Now the real plot begins!! This book just continues to weave intricate plots and sarcasm and I love everything about it. I feel Skulduggery is hiding more things than usual and I cannot wait to find out what they are Here the book plots start to thread from one to the other - and the books become more teen/young adult. And Stephanie is about to become wild and I’m actually here for it

"Be nice," she muttered as they walked over. "I'm always nice," Skulduggery responded. "Don't point your gun at his head." "Oh," he said. "that kind of nice." OH MY GOD! I KNEW IT WAS COMING AND IT STILL SHOOK ME AND I KINDA WANT TO REREAD THE NEXT BOOK LIKE NOW BECAUSE... THIS ENDING!!! *screams at the top of her lungs* *clears throat* Where was I? Ah, yeah. Fourth book in the series and still amazing. I love the sarcasm, the magic, the characters... I love it. And you know what? When I first rea "Be nice," she muttered as they walked over. When I first read this series it never crossed my mind because, you know, Valkyrie is just so young in the first books. Too young to be shipped with anyone, really. Plus he's a cynical skeleton. Didn't really see him as the realtionship kinda of... skeleton. BUT I think I'm starting to ship Skulduggery and Valkyrie. Maybe not at this point of the story but she's getting older throughout the series. And i'm just gonna go dig myself a grave because I think this reread changed how I view one of my favorite series ever forever... Skulduggery and Valkyrie were meant for each other. China could see that now. They were meant to find each other, to form this bond and to effect each other's lives.

Firstly, Derek Landy is not only one of my top favorite authors, but the author I aspire to be like. His series (Skulduggery Pleasant, starting with "Scepter of the Ancients")fits into the young adult category. The books aren't easy to find in American stores (he's Irish, and given the lingo he uses, it definitely shines through in his writing), so I reccomend looking for them on amazon. I RECCOMEND THIS SERIES to all ages, and all readers. I RECCOMEND THIS SERIES to all ages, and all readers. This is the ONLY series of books I've ever read, and laughed out loud like a lunatic in a room completely by myself while reading. The stories follow a young girl named Stephanie through her adventures as the sidekick to a skeleton detective, befittingly named Skulduggery in a modernized, grittier version of the Harry Potter world (magic users hiding right under the noses of "normal" people). The plots are creative without being too hard to follow, he's hilarious, his characters are compelling (even the bad guys are hard to dislike), and his action scenes are totally bad ass. Despite the fact that this is technically a "children's book," these are quite possibly the goriest books I've ever read in my life. For a small taste of Derek Landy's genius, I highly advise checking out his blog at http://dereklandy.blogspot.com/, which is often times just as clever as his series. As for Dark Days in particular, I think this is the one that officially won me over for life-- it's also the one where I realized "Damn, this sh*t is getting real." It's WAY, WAY darker then any of the previous books, and really takes Skulduggery's character in a whole new direction. That's all I'm willing to say!

At the end of Faceless Ones , we read as Skulduggery was sucked into the portal to the world of the Faceless Ones . In this novel we are introduced to Zombies and Vampires -Good and Bad ones. Can Skulduggery be saved and when he returns , is he ok or damaged ?. Can Valkyrie along with the help of friends new and old save the world from destruction from Scarab and his crowd. We also keep hearing about an evil sorceress who is coming to take over the world Darquesse , when Valkyrie discovers news on who she is and that Darquesse is closer than anyone realises . Its time to decide who Valkyrie is to be and become. Will she take a path of good or when the time arrives will she turn her back and let the evil side takeover. An excellent novel , that Im glad I perservered and picked up as If I hadnt I probably would have continued to think it was about Pirates LOL :). I also read a rumour that their is to be nine books in the series and a movie -lets keep our ears and eyes on the lookout to see if thats true.

This one was the best one yet. Perfect in several areas in my opinion. Great Pacing, fantastic character development, interesting and exciting story. I would also say that one great improvement is that the character really does not run away as much anymore and the conflicts feel a bit more natural and interesting. It still got the mastermind evil vibe going, but the bad guys has more reason to it. I recommend the series based one this book alone. I will continue to read the next one and hope it wi This one was the best one yet. Perfect in several areas in my opinion. That ending, tho... I feel like every review I type up for the books in this series is going to basically be the same: I love the world, I love the characters, the books are fun and quick/easy to read and I just... love them. They might be flawed in their own ways here and there, but I always enjoy myself whenever I'm reading them tbh. Perfect books to read in-between studying for exams and handing in those final assignments imo. That ending, tho... What to say! Derek Landy writes the contents of 3 books in one, and he does it quite efficiently. I have read this for a long long time. But, actually it's my fault and not author's. This book is fast, magical, dangerous, cruel, enchanting, and everything else. Surprises drops big time here, people dies and lives as well. It deserves a five star, at least for me. I am forever so glad that I have picked up this series. I have 5 more books to go. And after that 3 new books as well! Yahoo. What to say! Her own character growth has been on the up and up ever since the story began and i love the direction this character is headed and cannot wait to see where she goes next. As i said before in my previous reviews that this book was missing something and for me everything this book has is what the other 3 were missing for me personally. Every single character is at there best right now and that's also down to the side characters as well and i hope this continues in the series. All the character relationships have been built more and added on to in this one and i love where they are all at. I really don't have anything negative to say about this book it was strong from beginning to end and i got through this one real fast. Book 5 has a lot to live up to and i hope that it continues on to have this strong streak because this book has kept my interest in the series alive.
