From the best story tellers of Phalanx Press comes a frightening tale of Armageddon. It spread fast- no time to understand it- let alone learn how to fight it. Once it reached you, it was too late. First I will say that I freakin’ loved this story! OK, now with that out of the way, here’s why. This is a uniquely written book by five different authors. Yep…five! The characters are so well written and realistic you can’t help but cheer for them as they travel from different starting points when the shtf, to all try and end up in one central location of safety. With the world being overrun by a virus that causes people to turn into crazed killers, it’s not an easy feat for everyday people like you and I to figure out how to stay alive let alone travel thousands of miles without being turned into one of them. Once the journey starts, the action never stops. And believe me, I was literally on the edge of my seat, foot shaking, heart pounding, fist clenched as I read some of the scenes. The road to Texas was anything but smooth and really got bumpy as more people became infected. The ending was somewhat of a surprise to me and the way the book ended left the door open to continue this hair-raising adventure. Yeah, I did have a few choice words when I reached the ending but was not disappointed. This book is filled with 475 pages of pure entertainment. That alone is something special nowadays and I will admit that quite a few things were left undone around my house so I could read…just one more chapter! I definitely am not reluctant to recommend this story to anyone and I don’t do this often but this book has now bumped a book out of the top five on my list of favorite apocalyptic stories. Yes! It is that good!

Revived the genre with this book! In a saturated market it’s basically impossible to find a good zompoc book, let alone a great one! Well, look no longer! Here’s a fast paced, well developed read that you won’t be able to put down! I can’t believe several authors had their hand in this collaboration! You can’t tell where one stops and another begins. A true testament to the quality of their work and obvious talent! Impatiently waiting for more!!!

For a collaboration the story really had amazing flow. The characters were interesting and believable. There were no Rambo's taking on the world. Lots of action throughout but the story was well told and interesting on it's own. I highly recommend this book for fans of the zompoc genre. Five authors with Phalanx Press have collaborated to bring you Five Roads To Texas. Each author contributes a group of folks trying to survive the outbreak as they travel to Texas. Each group comes from different parts of the US and are very diverse in their makeup. Regardless of how it’s billed this is a zombie-type book. Though I do not care for zombie stories this was well written and one of the better edited. The only downside was that they often stayed with one set of characters too long. I often had to refresh my memory as they switched to a different set. This is a very frank novel. It does not hold back in its language or graphic descriptions. It is not for the faint of heart. The pace is varied and moves along quite well. All the characters are well developed. The story has some lightheartedness as well as plenty of heartache. I am looking forward to the breakout novels that will follow each of the groups separately. 4 out of 5 stars.

An exciting start to new adventures! I didn't know what to expect with multiple authors writing the story, and I was surprised at how well the story flowed. I admit, I'm a zombie fan, and a HUGE fan of all the authors so it wasn't a big leap for me to love this book. I'll say I'm quite happy for the scene involving the would-be rapist. We just don't see frontier justice done that well in books anymore. Anyway, if you love excitement, adventure, action and...oh wait...ZOMBIES, then pick this up! This was the single best collaboration I have ever read. It was a fantastic read that I finished in two days. I haven't read a book this diligently since the last harry Dresden book came out. It was a fantastic tapestry that at first you think there is no way all these threads are going to fit, but as you read you saw the weave form. I can not recommend it highly enough. AH-FREAKING-MAZING. !!!! WHY didn’t they think to collaborate sooner!?! What a fantastic story! I’m hooked. I cannot wait to continue. I didn’t even want to pause to construct this review lol. I was just explaining the book to someone yesterday. Remarking how utterly phenomenal the writers all are (and editors) to be able to come together to craft a story that flows - and sounds - like one author wrote it. BRAVA!! But, of course, with these authors, there is no surprise there. Professional writer AH-FREAKING-MAZING. !!!! WHY didn’t they think to collaborate sooner!?! What a fantastic story! I’m hooked. Remarking how utterly phenomenal the writers all are (and editors) to be able to come together to craft a story that flows - and sounds - like one author wrote it. BRAVA!! But, of course, with these authors, there is no surprise there. Professional writers, & superstars of the genre. The characters, & character development - incredibly rich. I’m so invested with everyone’s fates. I guess without going on and on, the best thing I can say is- I authentically care. And, in one case, someone is sooooo extremely irritating & can get right under my skin. Well, out of THAT person’s “partnership,” the wrong partner ended up being the one able to ride shotgun into the sunset. Urgh. This character seemed to be growing at the very end, with her/his materialistic focused world now gone, so we’ll see. Fingers crossed. (Seriously. Or I may have to take out some kind of “eye rolling” health insurance.) Now, a SERIOUS injustice I cannot wrap my mind around... I can’t understand how ALL authors agreed to something - ((((((((( POSSIBLE SPOILER * SKIP IF YOU WANT ))))))))) *********************** - involves the neck snap. I mean, really!?! EVERYONE thought this was a great idea? That it would be .... satisfying? Or were you all tired, had been up all night, brainstorming away, having beers, pizza. Then finally at 4:30am someone sighs & says, “ok, so then ... “ And you all respond, “yep that’ll work, fine, good, sure, we’re outta here...” All the “oomph” had been left behind by 2:45am.. ?? (Maybe after someone suggested doing shots an hour prior to that?? ;) Ok, anyway..lol So, the injustice. I’m not sure ANYONE will be satisfied with what happened? Too.... easy. :/ My wish? “He” shoulda gone with the guys, out into the heartland a ways.... got a reeeal good look & taste of life outside. Then they give him a boot in the tush on a stretch of highway near an urban area, to “continue his research.” ;) Now THAT would have been quite satisfying indeed. But, alas, I never did receive the email from you all to collaborate with you on this project, so.... :) Maybe next time. Lol *********************** ((((((((( POSSIBLE SPOILER * END ))))))))) The rest of the story- the infected. They have just enough of a unique twist to keep all that has to do with them entertaining and interesting. There’s none of that “zoning out” happening that sometimes occurs when reading yet another same ol’ scene staring the same ol’ type of “zombies”- many times within the same book. That’s definitely not found within this book. The setting, scenes, and the “show me don’t tell me” skill of the authors- spot on. Once again showcasing the talent of the writers. From paragraph one, you’re drawn in.... transported to another place. Feet on the ground, butt in a boat, or gasping- grasping, while running for your life. Seeing the sights (in 3D living color, wounds on bodies, the many varied roads, tracks, & trails people must traverse), the smells (smoke, blood, cat box, gunpowder), hearing the sounds (accents, different caliber weapons, munitions, the subtle thump of a body as it’s slowly pulled from a car by an emotional other, the scratching of infected nails on a door screen), all of it. Finally, the emotional world the authors are able to build in general, and within each individual character. We are privy to the majority of the character’s innermost thoughts & feelings. Then, how their inner workings become expressed in the world. This is an extra special experience as the deftness of hand used by these writers is more rewarding than one is accustomed to finding in other books. Thus- this is an all around successful collaboration, culminating in one of the very best novels on the market today. Our genre, & I’m going to break it down into MY favorite aspects ;) - military, zombie, apocalypse books, with some “science” and/or “medicine” thrown in as a gold star bonus, would be incomplete without this novel on it’s shelves. And all the series and spin-off books that are to come. I was beyond excited when I learned of “Five Roads to Texas.” While reading it, I was in apocalypse heaven & only a quarter of the way through I knew already I wished it would never end! Now that it has... my hope is that it becomes one of those great series, that stands head & shoulders above the rest (which it already does as a single), growing to become an empire of novels. As the foundation is here. It’s all here for a long, exciting, bumpy & bloody, emotional, twisting & turning, villains & victors, who knows WHAT could happen with the infected- oh the possibilities!, triumphant - or not, future! It all, & more, awaits.... And I, for one, cannot wait to continue being along for the ride!! So hit it Kinsey! I’ve got yer six, girl!

This is very entertaining collaboration between five authors who write in the Zompoc genre. The authors did a great job tying these stories together. You have some common everyday people who are just trying their best to cope with what is happening, trying to protect those they love. You have a few trained mercenaries who are just trying to earn their pay. There are the expected roadblocks as our protagonists try to reach the safety of a military run zone in El Paso. Evil men out to get whatever they can from a woman travelling by herself and said woman doing what every female hopes she will do. The authors did not have a problem with killing off some of the characters that the readers are pulling for, which makes it more realistic since not everybody comes out alive. The action is plentiful, but there are some emotional moments as the survivors deal with these deaths. I loved the addition of Sidney's cat, Rick James. It is not uncommon to have a dog (like Clay's dog, Rufus) in a Zombie book, but this is first time I have come across a cat. I love that Sidney goes to so much trouble to include Rick in her adventure. The addition of a possible conspiracy by persons unknown adds a new flavor to a genre that sometimes seems stale. This book can be read as a standalone, but it does end without a resolution. I will definitely be reading the stories of my favorite characters to see what happens next. The narrator did a great job, but he did have a pretty fast pace at times. All in all, an enjoyable book for the Zombie enthusiast.

Five Roads is one story told by multiple authors. The beauty lies in just how well the stories and characters have been woven together. It held my interest with an iron grip and kept me guessing. Emotions were raw and uncensored, action was fast and exciting, and justice was served Deadwood-style! No family-friendly language, fluff or filler was found here. Just a post-apocalyptic zombie drama overflowing with butt-kicking goodness! I'm looking forward to more from the Five Roads universe. I have some mixed feelings about this book. The actual plot was fairly interesting, particularly at the point we find that there are outside forces really up to no good. There were some characters that I liked and felt had some good potential: Jack, Deena, Ram and Jesse and after a while, Sidney grew on me. The unraveling of society happens at a frightening pace. I'm not a prude at all but expect crudeness and graphic situations to make sense as part of the story and not be there for its own sake or to make everything feel "edgy"-the plot should do that. There was a lot of gratuitous and non-relevant coarseness. I'm not sure about continuing the series but may read book 2 to see what happens to the remaining characters that I like.

I read reviews about this book and maybe had my hopes a little high. I wanted the love it and have it be something more than just another zombie book but that is all I got out of it. To be fair, if I had read this years ago I would have probably loved it. As it turns out though it was more of a challenge to finish than a desire to experience the final outcome for me. That kind of bums me out. This book was given to me for free at my request for my voluntary and unbiased review.

A serious run at the genre ! This group of authors is making a serious run at the genre of the zompoc. All of these authors write their parts extremely well. All of the road leading to Ft.
