It is king’s utmost duty to look after progress and welfare of people of his country.” Kautilya (also known as Chanakya aka Vishnugupt, c. 350-275 BCE) was an Indian statesman and philosopher, chief advisor and Prime Minister of the Indian Emperor Chandragupta, the first ruler of the Mauryan Empire. Kautilya belonged to the Brahmin caste (the priestly class), he was originally from Northern India and a professor of political science and economics at the University of Taxila. He was fully knowledgeable concerning the Vedas literature and it is also believed that he might have had some knowledge of Zoroastrianism. He mentored Chandra Gupta Maura (a Shudra Low caste person) to become king. With Chandra Gupta he repelled the invasion of Greeks and also dethroned Dhananand. This is the English translation of his Chankya Neeti. First the shloka is given in Sanskrit, then it is written in roman and finally the English translation is given. Some explanation is also given in brackets if required. The shlokas given here are for practical use in statecraft. These are not theoretical. This is proven by the historical facts that how he defeated the mighty Nandas. Some examples are reproduced below: 1. Without good assistance a king can take no right decisions. 2. Courage alone is not enough to achieve success in one’s mission. 3. An irritable or foul tempered cow is better than having thousand dogs. 4. One’s wisdom fails at the onset of the evil days. Although the teachings are excellent some have become outdated. Some of these are anti Dalit and sexist in today’s context. Some of those may be correct when written but lost relevance in today’s age. Some examples: 1. A woman, by nature, is liar, courageous, deceitful, foolish, greedy, impious and cruel. These are innate attributes of a woman. 2. Women have a knack of talking to one man, casting an askew glance at other and loving secretly a third man. They can’t devotedly love just one man. 3. The power of Brahmans is knowledge, of the king his army, of the trader class their wealth and of the menial class their service ability. [Chankya asserts Manu] So, this Neeti is mixed bag in present context. It should not be followed verbatim and in toto, but in small doses. We should use our wisdom and use it as per the changed times wherever required. There are many printing mistakes and at some places there are boxes instead of words. A better proof reading was required. Translation could have been better. 4/5 stars.

Overall, it is a good book to read and some of his thoughts were still fresh which can make you feel wow and a pure form of inspiration.

The best part about the book it that it has explained various aspects of life in the simplest possible manner. All the sholks are first written in sanskrit and then in english . The translation of each slok is very properly defined in lucid language. Though most of the shloks still find relevance in the mordern world, it cannot be said that it is completely relevant today as it was at the time it was written. There were few things which i found outdated as per today's culture and norms. Also there were few complex shloks whose translation was not satisfactory. A better and in-depth explaination was required at some places. Overall a good read to understand and follow our roots. Rating - 4/5

The principles given by him not only helped the kingdom but has been proved as a treasure upon which present day management is laid upon. His famous works are Arthashartra and Chanayka Neeti. World for me was totally different few years ago as I was a science student and changing trade after 12th was heck tiring. But something caught my attention and I am thankful to my Professor who suggested me to pick Chanakya Neeti to have a better understanding of the economy. While going through the book I realized how visionary Chanakya was back then. He developed principles which not only benefited the king and the people but it helped to shape the entire trade and commerce. His works talked about the people living during that era, how the trade and commerce was put into use so as to regulate money in the market. Chanakya Neeti was actually the principles. Principles which is not limited to commerce and economy but there are concepts which hold much broader importance in one’s life, be it a teacher, a parent, a son or soul. Each element present of the earth, which is related to human in any way, has been described by him. Chanakya always believed if one has to achieve all the set objectives in his life then it’s essential for him to follow these principles because they together served a prudent definition of a better human being who is capable for reaching the summit. This book contains all principles along with explanations and special notes by Chankaya. The book can be completed in one sting and is very gripping. This is a must read book for a commerce student but I would also recommend it to everyone because following these principles would definitely make you a better man and you would not loose n any phase of life. Grapevine India has done a fantastic job while compiling this book, the way they put the things together has actually make me love this more. A great page turner. Reviewed by Aditi Srivastava

Translation in the English language does make some sense, but I couldn't understand the presence of Hinglish language. In that place, I would be more comfortable if they Hindi would have taken place of Hinglish. Some of the sutras are specific to some areas. About kingdom and Kingsman ship. And, I felt that some of them are unnecessarily broken into small chunks, which could be presented together. Or if presented in separate chunks, as a reader I would be delighted to see presenter's artistic contribution in that, a short story or maybe something relevant to that. But, not just translation! At places, they are there, but very limited and not that effective. What more this book could do this is to involve content like how these sutras can be adopted in today's lifestyle. It reminded me more of my Grade's Sanskrit to English translation book. The way it has been presented didn't give me the feeling of extraordinary efforts to give readers something new to feed their brain. I'm rating it 4, not because of the presentation, but because of the original content, Chanakya's words!

Most of the messages in the book are in a manner which makes the reader think of his current situation and acts accordingly. In my opinion, I would say that that this book could be considered even as a self-help book just because of the vast amount of information and deep thoughts which is been presented in this book and that that too in a very simple manner that even school children could understand. Why I say school children is because those are a time when a human brain needs to learn morality. In short, I would say is this book simplifies the complexity of the messages and quotes of Chanakya and brings it to the reader. Overall a good book start with if you are not aware of Chanakya and his thoughts.

This book depicts all the shlokas written by chanakya in Sanskrit and its hindi and English translation. It is like reading Bhavgat Gita but except the stories, just the shlokas. I wonder how Chanakya has written all this Shlokas and if he has written it then who has compiled it now. Overall it is a good experience to read his insights about life.

Full of ancient wisdom but contains misogynistic references which may not be acceptable for all. The author reiterates the importance of character, education, solitude etc to thrive in this world and beyond. Highly recommended to all who seek an inner-transformation.

A good book to listen to. The ideas are practical and in line with the knowledge of Vedas. I personally feel this book should be placed before we step into adulthood and gives us a stepping stone towards wisdom and judgment.
