Deep in Earth my love is lying… Edgar Allan Poe (Deep in Earth, 1847) Lila Paige wasn’t expecting to find herself entangled in a web of terror. In fact, she had been looking forward to her new position as paid companion to the reclusive Mrs. Ravenshaw, and the Gothic manor’s country setting seemed like a welcome change from the messy London winter. The charming man she met on the train, who lived nearby, assured her that the old manor was intriguing. But, there were others at Raven’s Rest, who had their own motives for being there. Madness, murder and the Ravenshaw Will became the talk of the day, and as Lila pieced together fragments of conversations and her own discoveries, it became clear that a sinister plot was unfolding. As Lila searched for clues to how she fit in their schemes, the web around her tightened. Would she be able to escape in time, or was a tragedy about to repeat itself?

This author writes very well and knows how to spin a good Gothic mystery. There was plenty of gloom and foreboding, some surprising plot twists and a satisfying ending. If you enjoy traditional-style Gothic romances, you won't be disappointed. This author writes very well and knows how to spin a good Gothic mystery. Lots of dark, Gothic elements in this book. I am in two minds bout this gothic tale by Ms Kincaide. It is full of mystery and dark elements including murder, questionable characters, nefarious deeds and a dark, decrepit manor. The suspense is presented right from the beginning of the book and the tension builds at a steady pace right up to the climax. Lila is a very likeable heroine full of courage and determination. Parts of the story are just very difficult to believe and become very convolute Lots of dark, Gothic elements in this book. I am in two minds bout this gothic tale by Ms Kincaide. Parts of the story are just very difficult to believe and become very convoluted, particularly the plot surrounding Thaddeus Ravenshaw. The ending feels rushed and the fact that certain people get away with their actions because heaven forbid there is a scandal, is just ridiculous. It’s not a bad read but it’s not a great one either. I think that given the premise, the plot could have been delivered in a more believable manner.

The Secrets of Rave’s Rest By: LC Kincaide 3.5 stars Fast paced, fun and entertaining! Lila accepts a position as a paid companion. Her employer is a wealthy and infirm woman who feels as though she’s nearing the end of her life. Lila is being paid handsomely and treated far better than an employee in a grand estate - a lovely bedroom, plenty of time off, meals with the family & freedom to explore. Her only duty? Reading to Mrs. Ravensclaw each afternoon until she tires. What a dream come true!! Or The Secrets of Rave’s Rest By: LC Kincaide 3.5 stars Fast paced, fun and entertaining! Reading to Mrs. Ravensclaw each afternoon until she tires. What a dream come true!! Or is it? Lila notices that the house is full of secrets, the family seems like hovering vultures, waiting for her employer to die, and WHY are men not allowed to work in the house? I enjoyed this story, but found some of the mystery ruined by predictability. Overall, a gothic mystery romance that wraps everything up in a neat package. I greatly respect and admire indie authors and I’m going to keep this one on my radar!! 🤗🤗

Excellent Gothic! This was in the true Gothic style I dearly love! There is a young woman, a dashing man, a strange house and family, a mystery, tragedy and finally closure. The ending was fabulous! It does need a bit of editing.

Very good This was a really good book with the lots of twists and turns. It reminds me of early Phyllis Whitney books and that is a good recommendation.
