I listened to Girls & Boys as an audiobook read by Carey Mulligan. (It's more accurate to say she "acted it out"--it was performed by Carey Mulligan because I could visualize every word she said.) I first listened to the sample, which was, quite possibly, the funniest snippet of an audiobook I've ever heard--and spot on as far as human nature goes...so I bought it, not really reading what this play was about. To be honest, it was Carey Mulligan that attracted me to the monologue. I saw her featured as the narrator--a recommendation from an Audible editor named Sam. The whole thing is only about 90 minutes--the length of a movie and I had time for that so I downloaded it. It is not a funny story. It's a story of survival. It's a tale of violence and heartbreak. And it feels real--disturbingly, horrifyingly real. At one point, the narrator says that what she's about to tell you is not happening to you, and you think, "Oh, that's not--that's not good." Her warning, I found, was necessary. It gave me just enough distance to be able to hang on until that part was over. Just enough. Barely. I'm not sure that I agree with all the conclusions that the author came to in this play. Some of it rings true, while other things are debatable. What I found absolutely brave was that Dennis Kelly had the nerve to ask those questions. The balls. Carey Mulligan should win awards for this. Dennis Kelly should win awards for this. I know it's something that will stick with me forever.

What an amazing piece of theatre. I love theatre and often attend plays on my own as I love to be in the moment and immerse myself in the play. I think this is why Girls and Boys worked so well for me, I loved how we are drawn in with the humour and in the opening part of the performance and its as if the writer is preparing us for unthinkable. I loved Carey performance and would love to have seen this in theatre but enjoyed it just as much in the comfort of my living room. Thank you to my goodreads friends for recommending this one. Loved it.

I am reviewing the Audible Original version of the Off-Broadway play Girls & Boys starring BAFTA Award winner and Academy & Tony Award nominee Carey Mulligan. The play was written by playwright Dennis Kelly in 2016. I went into the performance knowing very little. I recommend others to do the same. I struggled at the beginning and have come out applauding. At the beginning, I struggled with the excessive use of swear words. I struggled to feel empathy. I struggled to relate and then slowly, bit by bit, I came to understand. With understanding my feeling toward the central protagonist reversed completely. This is a drama monologue; one woman is speaking to us, to you and to me. What she is telling us is honest and true and upfront. She is speaking from her heart. The honesty is brutal. I dare you to listen to this and not be moved. This is what I want a book to do to me. I saw how my feeling for the woman made a 180-degree turn. I come out of the reading thinking—don‘t ever, ever judge another person. One never knows what another has gone through. You must listen to the audiobook, do not even consider reading the book. Of course if you can get tickets to the play, do that instead. The audiobook concludes with words spoken by Dennis Kelly. He tells us why he wrote the play and what he has attempted to achieve. What he says gives one food for thought. A book that makes one feel and think is a book that fits me to a tee. This is a book about family violence. It speaks of gender differences. It speaks of what is expected of men and women today. It pushes one to consider societal restraints. It had me pondering our contemporary world--terrorism, stress, our absence of trust, our sense of insecurity and our total lack of optimism in relation to the future. Yet defeatism is self-fulfilling, so how does one get beyond the all-prevailing pessimism of today? Here is a book that goes far beyond a simplistic discussion of feminism.

Performed by Carey Mulligan. Directed by Lyndsey Turner 1:46:24 One of the Audible Original selections for September, this was one heck of a devastatingly beautiful performance of the evolution of one couple's relationship. Carey Mulligan is IMHO a brilliant actress that nails every role she takes on and Girls &Boys is no different. It's worth your time, but make sure vulnerable ears are not around as there is strong language and a horrific situation that occurs. Performed by Carey Mulligan. WOW I was blown away by this play. I have been struggling with audio books lately, not finding enough time to really listen for long stretches, so this was perfect. Short, powerful and attention grabbing. Carey Mulligan you were a fantastic narrator! The story may start off on a light and funny note, but it turns a dark corner quite quickly. The less you know the better, just dive in.

I read the transcript for this extraordinary piece of one-person theatre and was spellbound from the very first page and left open-mouthed on the very last. The entire piece is one extended monologue, and as the female talks her audience through the details of her life the sickening details are slowly unfurled with a deadly precision and perfection of timing that left my both spellbound and horrified.

Carey Mulligan is amazing, and performs this one-woman play on the stage as well. The playwright at the end talks about the small changes they made to make it work for audio. She is great, the subject matter is difficult, and the topic of violence toward women and children was just not really what I needed another reminder of this weekend.

Update: 2/15.21 On a reread, the mastery of Kelly's play shines thorough just as much as on a first read. And since the devastating last 10 pages make such a visceral impact, I had forgotten just how funny the first 50 can be. I knew absolutely nothing about this book when I bought it. I like Carey Mulligan and it was only a few dollars so I thought I would give it a chance. The first 2/3 was completely uninteresting to me, and I normally would have DNF'd it but it was so short that I figured I might as well finish it. And the THE GIANT PLOT TWIST happened and I'm glad I did stick with it. It's still only a 3 star book, but what a ride. I knew absolutely nothing about this book when I bought it. Stunning! Unbelievable performance by Carey Mulligan. I received this Audible original free from Audible and was prepared for something mediocre....what a surprise. If you have an Audible account, you must listen to this right now! This was written as a stage play, a monologue by a woman who has been a victim of domestic violence....it is absolutely chilling and made me replay my own life and how things could have taken a wrong turn and had disastrous results.

    Q. Is a play a book? A1. Hmm ... Q. Is it still a book if you listen to it? A. No, almost certainly not then. You're right, but I'm reviewing this one anyway because it just BEGS to be talked about. What's so great about it? Carey Mulligan's performance, first and foremost, was unbelievable. This isn't an audiobook but rather a beautifully acted monologue. I'm not sure any other actor could have really pulled this off. This isn't an audiobook but rather a beautifully acted monologue. I'm not sure any other actor could have really pulled this off. Mulligan has performed "Girls & Boys" in front of audiences, and I'm sure that's fantastic, but not having seen it it's hard to say what you miss out on by just listening to it. This is a weird thing. It starts off really nice and light and, since both Kelly and Mulligan are Brits, has a sort of distinctive Richard Curtis (of "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually" fame) thing about it. “I met my husband in a queue to board an EasyJet flight,” Mulligan's character tells us as preface to a scene as wryly amusing as it sounds. And the tone stays like that. A story of a consistently amusing, oftentimes funny relationship between two people who sound like a match made in heaven. Then it all goes to hell. It isn't until about three-quarters of the way through that everything goes darker than a moonless night in the countryside but oh, it does indeed get dark. Minutes after chuckling at Kelly's sensationally smart dialogue you're left gasping in the dark. But I'm not about to go and spoil things. You just have to listen — and you really should listen — to this. "Girls & Boys" is a fantastically clever script and Mulligan is just fabulous. The ending will leave you in tatters and you won't be able to think about anything else for days, but that's what really good art should do.

Dennis Kelly has written a monologue about toxic masculinity but then refuses to use the term even though that’s exactly what it’s about. Sorry but I lost all respect. He *just* said little boys are brought up with playing with toy guns and violence is “part of their lives” and yet the “problem” is that society tries to stop men. No, just no, that’s *literally* not the problem at all, does he even understand cause and effect? Two stars for Carey Mulligan’s performance, zero for the story.

Wow. Just wow. Not for the faint of heart. Carey Mulligan was the star of this one-woman stage-play-turned-audiobook. It is really a monologue for 100+ minutes. At first it reminded me of that other play-turned-movie, ‘Closer’. You know, the one starring Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts etc. An exploration of relationships in all their scintillatingly exciting and then excruciatingly painful reality. This one starts off similarly and then 2/3 of the way through it hits you with a gut punch. I had Wow. Just wow. Not for the faint of heart. My best friend recommended this play to me. She read it on a whim because she wanted a quick read and it captivated her so strongly that she was in a haze the rest of the day. I was worried she had over-hyped it and I was going to be let down, but I was so wrong. This monologue does real justice to such a serious and tragic topic. The brevity of the book really worked to enforce how sudden and jarring death can be. My emotions were all over the place and I appreciated every second of it. Wow! This play was stunning, shocking, sad and unforgettable. Carey Mulligan was riveting. I loved the quiet way she handled the material. I love the little moments in which Kelly had the woman break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience. In fact, after the lengthy discussion of the most horrific part of the story that she warned me about, I hit rewind and went back to hear the warning again. It was beautiful and powerful. This story, and all its lessons, will linger with me for a long time to come. And I will seek out anything done by Carey Mulligan from now on. She was brilliant.

She really brings this play to life, so that even listening from my desk I could easily visualize her moving around the stage. This play had me breathless on the edge of my seat, completely wrapped up in the story she was telling. There are enough hints for you to see where her tale is going, but the reveal still hits you like a gut-punch. I absolutely recommend this audiobook to everyone. If you are like me and not able to see this play in person or to those that have already seen the play. The bonus content interview with Dennis Kelly is fantastic, and I love hearing his process of writing this piece and how it relates to manhood and masculinity and its victims. It’s a timely piece during this #MeToo movement, and it’s refreshing to hear a play performed for a woman dealing with that issue written by a man who is very conscious and careful with how he handles the material. I will end this review is the line that had me stop cold in my tracks and totally encapsulates what I loved about this play: “We didn’t create society for men. We created it to stop men.”

I basically chose this because of Carey Mulligan. I knew she wouldn't have attached herself to this if it didn't mean something to her. And after hearing it, I can see why she agreed to do this. It was sometimes sweet, sometimes funny, and always brutally honest. Then it became twisted and dark. I loved the way Carey acted out the story, her voice was mesmerizing and the story itself was incredibly well written. I know this won't be for everyone, but I personally really connected to this.
