Complete waste of paper. When LeSueur is spelled three different ways in the first 10 pages, you know the author's in trouble. Complete waste of paper. When LeSueur is spelled three different ways in the first 10 pages, you know the author's in trouble.

“Joan Crawford was a real lady, well poised, elegant, all qualities that hardly exist in today’s world. She was a true friend, a wonderful woman, a legend” When a friend of mine told me that there was a book solely dedicated to the letters that Miss Crawford sent to her fans and her close friends, I knew I had to read it, surprisingly my local library had it so I took it out and devoured it instantly. This book is really beautiful, it not only is a book that shows just how gracious and wonderful Joan was to her fans but it’s also a glorious tribute to the lost art of letter writing. In this day and age it’s so easy to communicate with people, sending a text or an email is now the norm whereas in Joan’s day writing a letter was the way to talk to her, an act that she wholeheartedly encouraged her fans to do. Now you may think that Joan would hire a secretary to respond to the large amounts of fan-mail she received (thousands each month) however you’d be wrong, Joan knew that her fans are what made her a star and she thought it only fair that she personally respond to them. Her letters were written in such a pleasant and romantic way, always making the recipient feel very special and expressing her gratitude for their love, something many a movie actress these days could take note of. This book is obviously a labour of love for Michelle Vogel, it mustn’t have been easy compiling all that is presented here but I’m oh so happy she did. This is probably one of the best books to read if you want to find out about Joan, she was a class act like no other and really a one of a kind woman and movie actress who loved her fans in such a special way. I absolutely loved it from cover to cover. A very enthusiastic 5 stars.

Imagine writing a fan letter to a star, and not only does she write you back personally, but the letter is hand-written, not a form letter, and it mentions specific items from your letter, so you know it's not generic. Joan Crawford, especially in her later years, would spend 8-12 hours a day answering her fan mail. This book, an overview of Joan's massive correspondence, shows many examples of the notes Joan would pen to fans and friends. I was amazed by the obsessiveness that this would take, a Imagine writing a fan letter to a star, and not only does she write you back personally, but the letter is hand-written, not a form letter, and it mentions specific items from your letter, so you know it's not generic. I was amazed by the obsessiveness that this would take, and impressed with the gracious manners it represented to Joan as well. In many of the letters, she says she hopes to continue to do good work that her fans will like. In a way, that sums up what Joan was all about: an insanely driven, talented woman, who was well aware of the origin of her beautiful houses, money and career: her fans. It should be noted that this is a small press book (or print on demand; I can't remember which), with all the typical small press problems. It is full of spelling and punctuation errors, and the author is no Boswell. But if you love Joan Crawford, this is a compelling look at one important part of her life.
