I was not prepared for how fantastic Drinking Like Ladies is as both a coffee table book and a cocktail recipe book. More than just a bartender's guide to incredibly unique cocktails, Drinking Like Ladies features women who have left a lasting impression on the world. From spies to Princess Diana, the book features women from all over the world and the difficult tasks they faced head on in spite of what was expected of them. From spies to Princess Diana, the book features women from all over the world and the difficult tasks they faced head on in spite of what was expected of them. There is Mary Coffin Ware Dennet, a social reformer I did not previous know of, and of course, a page dedicated to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the aptly named When There Are 9! cocktail. Along with each woman's short biography is a note from the bartender that created the well-themed drink, a nice touch I appreciated that made the drinks feel more personal. Ultimately, many of the ingredients or tasks to make the cocktails require more bartending knowledge and ingredient access than I have. My friends and I have set out to try to create as many as we can, but I certainly will need to do extra research to complete some of them properly. That said, all sound fantastic and I was very impressed with the detail given to describing each liquor base and the flavoring it brings to a cocktail. Blossom & Six is at the top of my list to try, but I'll probably be distracted when I open the book by the gorgeous pages and the incredible history held within.

I used to love cocktails, then I fell out of love with drinking alcohol completely before slowly starting to enjoy it again. This book is making me go out and want to try my hand at making some new drinks. I may need a house party! There are some great sounding drinks in here but it's also a celebration of women. To steal the campaign tagline; 'Drinking Like Ladies' is dedicated to preserving and honoring classic cocktails from pre-Prohibition and beyond, while celebrating the oft-forgotten ladies who sipped them.  Each drink comes with it's own lady of history and a short bio about her. I'e read a few books now with short bios of women in history that I now want to go out and find more about and this book has greatly increased that to-do list.  It's an interesting mix with the recipes and history and I love the originality of it. I can't wait to get the hardback to add to my bookshelves.  Free arc from netgalley

I have come to the conclusion that bar-tenders are mostly drink-pourers these days, at least in the restaurants/bars I frequent: they follow their boss’ or franchise’s instructions and pour boring drinks with no creativity. This book made me think that I need to take that book with me to any place I might frequent: I am not a big drinker but when I do want a drink I tend to just get a diet pop as I don’t want a boring “well pour” and, also, they don’t sell Yuengling in Canada! I LOVED the stories of the famous ladies (many I had never heard of!) and the suggested cocktail although I am pretty sure that most of the drinks I will have to make at home unless I miraculously find a hipster bar that has molasses or PAMA – even Aperol is a non-stocked item where I live! I did get a recipe for a wicked punch for my niece’s wedding shower – screw the mere thought of pineapple/cranberry/vodka swill I was suggested to make! Love this book although it will be for my bookshelf at home vs. my work library as we “cannot promote alcohol on any level lest lose our funding!” Sigh – five stars.

With toasts to *extraordinary women* throughout history? Check. This had gold written all of it. Or it had the makings of a big flop of disappointment.Thankfully to say, it was the prior. This book turned out to meet all my dreams and exceed them from there. The beginning starts with how the book came into formation and then a short, sweet, but very detailed 101 on essential spirits, mixers, mixology, tools, garnishes, and glassware. Then its broken down into the sections of types of drinks: gun, whiskey, rum, agave, vodka, cognac, brandy, pisco, and punch. And those toasts we spoke of? To the women of history? They. Are. Amazing. And on top of that? There’s a gorgeous drawing of the women in history to go with the well-written, always about half a page background detailing all about them. As well as quote. Or a saying about them. This is an amazing production and I cannot wait to both own it and buy it for those wonderful girls in my life who would so appreciate it.

To start with there is a nice guide to the essential things you will need to make the cocktails including the main spirits, garnishes, glassware and mixers along with some mixology terms that people who are new to the cocktails world may not have come across before. Each of the cocktails in the book are named after different women throughout history, with their story then a cocktail that has a related name to the person plus a lovely illustration of each person on their page. There are some that I already like the person so was more drawn to the cocktail such as the Princess Diana cocktail ‘Park House’ or Lili Elbe ‘The Danish Girl’ but in other cases, I really enjoyed finding out about the people. There are only a few main drawbacks I found with the book, there aren’t really any simple cocktails that could be used as a starter cocktail so you’d have to be rather serious with the cocktail making plus it would take a bit of investment if you were hoping to try a few from home.

Many of the women I had not heard of but all had an interesting story. I think you would need a massive cocktail cabinet to contain all of the ingredients mentioned, but being selective you could have a lot of fun testing out the ones that appeal most to you. Thank you to Net Galley for a ARC.

But overall, this book was amazing - every woman who fancies herself a bartender, cocktail artist, or activist should have a copy. Keep smashing the patriarchy one drink at a time, ladies!

I love the idea behind this book, and feel like it can open up a series of cocktail recipes based off of a variety of subjects. I loved the style and layout of this book. The illustrations of the celebrated women above the recipe were stunning. I simply adored the artwork. The cocktail recipes sound delicious, and there are many that I would love to try to make myself. Although, personally for me, I found that some of the ingredients are too off my radar for me to acquire for a beverage. I loved the illustrations and concept of the book. I also appreciate that it is not always your typical "women in history" - yes you'll see an RGB inspired cocktail but also some women you may not have heard of or expected. I also appreciate the trans inclusiveness and that it featured a few contemporary women. My only complaint is that these cocktails seem very difficult to make at home - it is as if the recipes are featured for other bartenders. I usually don't have things like beetroot juice and "organic dried gardenia leaves" sitting around and I don't want to bust out my pots and pans to make syrups, shrubs, and infusions when I am ready to mix a drink - but that's just me. I am not whipping up potato peel simple syrup for one drink recipe...BUT I would love to travel to some of the bars listed and have a professional make one for me!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital advanced copy of Drinking Like Ladies. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the various women and I think it’s an inventive book. But as much as I love fussy recipes, there were few cocktails in here that I could recreate without major effort in sourcing materials. Thank you Quarto books for sharing the e-galley of Drinking Like Ladies with me in exchange for an honest review. Such a wonderful idea for a cocktail book! I was sent a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. And it was a great challenge for the bartenders to find specific ingredients to capture the essences of these awesome women. My biggest complain is that... the short bio we get on each woman is a bit bland. I did not hear of many of the women presented in this book and I am glad I got to meet them, but I wanted something a bit more than a bio. My problem is not with the short biography, but the writing style. A bit more entertaining and this book might have snatched another star. (But fellow readers enjoyed it greatly, so maybe this might not bother you either!)

I didn’t know how much I’d love this book. In addition to the gorgeous recipes, this book really celebrates women. I think I’ll end up buying a hardcover copy to have on my coffee table and to use at home. I received a free ebook ARC from Quarto Publishing Group--Quarry via NetGalley. This is my honest review.

I loved how this book took important women from history and named cocktails after them. I loved that there were some lesser known women featured, not just the obvious names you think of when thinking of women who have made an impact. The drinks look yummy, so I will definitely be making them in the future!

A perfect pairing of 75 cocktail recipes by rockstar female bartenders ... with toasts to remarkable women in history. A clever book idea poured with panache and mixed with some darn good liquor! 5/5 Cheers to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group-Quarry for the ARC. I LOVE this book. The recipes are creative and new (though some of them are pretty obscure for the home bartender), and the toasts are thoughtful and spot on. I love how the creators explain so well the connection between their drinks and the ingredients and the women they are honoring. This is also one of the few mixology books with a proper index. That is, if I want to make a drink with vermouth, I can look up vermouth and find all of the cocktails with them.

A bit tricky as a cocktail recipe book, since many of the ingredients cannot be accessed by your normal consumer. If you want to remember why we liked going to bars with well-tipped mixologists, attempting some of these monstrosities may remind you. But that said, I made a fair portion of these with a little creativity, and only disliked one recipe. And the pairing with feminist icons is really wonderful. Each recipe comes with a little bio that is succinct and meaningful and deserves a toast.

Hard to write an honest review when I'm not really sure what I was expecting. While I love all the vignettes about the chosen ladies, the cocktails come across as rather complex and inaccessible for anyone to attempt who doesn't have a bartending background. I don't think I'll try making many of them. I would definitely say to treat this less as a recipe book and more of a history lesson. I wanted to like this book. I love the concept and I really liked the different women featured! But the cocktails weren't anything that I would make at home. They called for a lot of very specific niche ingredients. I think this could be a fun book for the right reader, but it's not one that I could justify adding to my collection.
