During a blizzard in 2012, Kelly brought Loki—a husky/arctic wolf/malamute mix—home. Growing up in a family that took dog ownership very seriously, Kelly had his fair share of experiences with large dogs. But Loki was different. Instead of the dog entering into Kelly’s world, Kelly felt that he had to listen closely to Loki and enter into his world. I read this at the bookstore yesterday while waiting for someone. Apparently, this is another one of those books sprung into being after someone got "internet-famous" on Instagram. In this case, we're talking about Kelly Lund, an American with a very free lifestyle. When I say free, I mean he can't apparently sit still for even only a minute and when his boss told him he couldn't bring his dog to work anymore, he simply quit. When I say free, I mean he can't apparently sit still for even only a minute and when his boss told him he couldn't bring his dog to work anymore, he simply quit. Now, he's doing photography and it was one of his more spontaneous pics that made people follow him so much that he got a book deal. Which photo? This: So the book tells us how he and his dog Loki found each other and how their life was and still is one big adventure. There is not much text overall, the book tries to draw people in through the photography. One thing I very much agree with is the author's notion that you don't own an animal. Sure, there is the legal term and that often protects the animals from other humans, but in general that way of thinking is wrong. Animals are living breathing creatures, often more intelligent and having more empathy than humans, so the concept of owning them is wrong in my opinion. Rather, they are family members we need to protect like children. Apart from the above mentioned notion that was addressed here, the book lacked substance for me even considering what it was made for. Moreover, I must admit that the photographic style is nothing special. However, the wolfdog is extremely cute (and impressive) and the places they go look fascinating. However, here are a few more pictures for you to enjoy:

I've been stalking Loki on Instagram for a while now so I was really thrilled to find out that there would be a book with his pictures! And just like online, he's adorable even in print form. But let's be a little critical for a moment. I know that he's gone a long way to get where he is so the earliear photos aren't good quality so maybe because of that I'd rethink the format of the book but that's just a very shallow complaint. What I'm substracting a star for, however, is the writing around it. It was very short which could have been enough if it were consistent throughout the book. But there were semi-long passages which I hoped would bring more insight or tell stories (there is a lot of white space around some pics due to unfortunate formatting) but I'm afraid the author lives in Instaworld for way too long to write something apart from a short caption with a good point in it. I'm a bookworm, OK? I like good writing. This writing style was in the "meh" category. But we're all staring at the pictures, not at the writing, right? The places the duo visits are magical and the essence of them is captured beatifully, that's what really matters.

Beautiful, sweet pictures of a gorgeous dog and light but heartfelt text about the bond between dog and author. I would have liked maybe some more text, and more depth to the text, but I don't mind visual storytelling being the main medium here. --And most of the writing is pretty good, save for one unfortunate (and I'm sure well intended) perpetuation of a internet myth about wolves. Shame authors/editors don't check snopes and beyond before turning an instagram into a published book. Besides that little downside, I really enjoyed it and I'm glad to have these lovely images in book form. I may have to look up the author's instagram as well.

Picked this up for a light read. The photographs in the book are wonderful, but the opening description sets it up like it'll be a photo story of the photography & partner, plus their two dogs. Mostly, it's photos with a few random quotes or snippets. There's no overall narrative. That being said, if that's what you're looking for, it's worth picking up. Reminded me that the extra hassle to take the dog camping is worth it. Picked this up for a light read. Exquisite photos of a gorgeous wolf-dog. Beautiful scenery. Handsome man. A visual treat. Writing is sparse but really is secondary to the photos. Particularly for dog lovers, this book is mini mental vacation.

I've been a huge fan of this duo on Instagram for a while. It's always fun to see where they go next. There's excellent photography throughout the book (as I expected), and Lund's story of he and Loki's life together is great. I've been a huge fan of this duo on Instagram for a while.
