I went into this expecting the typical EMP survival book, community work together kind of thing that I enjoy but instead discovered that the EMP is actually pretty irrelevant in the story. It is actually an alien invasion YA story which is not what I was really looking for. It starts with a group of boys touching a fallen meteor and they become infected by the alien parasite and used as hosts. I'm not the greatest fan of YA at the moment but I did know that the MC was a teenage boy so that wasn't unexpected but there is no mention of the aliens in the blurb, which is strange. Not being a huge fan of alien invasion books, I wondered if I was going to struggle with this one, but in the end it was the YA angst that really annoyed me, not the aliens. The plot is like the Lost Boys with aliens instead of vampires. Two teenage boys dragged away from their home and friends by their mother to live in a small town with her eccentric father, who likes playing tricks on the kids. At school, one of the boys is approached by the weird brothers who try to tell them that aliens are taking over the bodies of people in town and that others are missing in growing numbers. Of course Logan is too busy chasing Anna to listen to any of the warnings. There was the focus on their romance and the typical YA angst as Logan fights with his mother about not wanting to come to Moab, kids playing tricks on him because he is the new kid...the usual. All the great adult characters like Gramps the conspiracy theory guy who is watching the aliens, all take a backseat to the rather dull group of kids. I found it too much of the angst, and not enough solid plot with interesting characters and a few plot things that left me rolling my eyes. The pacing was sporadic with dull chunks in it and I just lost interest.

The title says it is a "Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller", but the EMP is very incidental and not even all that relevant to the story. It is really an "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" alien parasite story. This really could have used a good editor. I was confused in the first chapter where there was a JT and a TJ. Were these two different characters or mistakes in reversing the initials (I'm guessing the latter)? The story was very uneven, fast and then dead slow. Fast paced apocalyptic thriller in need of a sequel I enjoyed this book. The pace made it hard to put down. The concepts and ideas were all interesting. But it needs a sequel or two. The ending was a little abrupt and left way too many unanswered questions. There's little hope for humanity for most of the book and that's explored well through the characters and their emotions. But I was just desperate for more information throughout and the ending left me wanting. Fast paced apocalyptic thriller in need of a sequel I enjoyed this book. The pace made it hard to put down. Surreal and terrifying What is so great about the DARKEST HOUR, is that it really could be in the realm of our understanding. Logan suffers and the reality of what is happening, causing him to exhibit a depth and maturity to carry forward as he pursues his friends. A fantastic story.

A Different View of an Apocolyps! The Darkest Hour kept me reading to past the final page. This is a good different version of what could happen. The characters are well developed, the scenery and staging is believable, and if you look at the science, it is plausible only because it is alien. I hope there are follow ups to this book because I want to know what happens next.

Not my favourite book by Mr Hunt I gave it three stars because this book had way to much teen angst in it for me. While the concept was intriguing, the storyline lagged. All the teen bickering was annoying.

What ..... ..... a fascinating book!!!!! One of Jack Hunt's best novels to date!!!! Another story with a different twist to the apocalypse!!! Although the first 10% or so is a little boring, it more than makes up for it throughout the other 90%!!! It was just to give you the background of the characters! The action is unbelievably believable!!!! And so are the characters ! NO ONE is safe ! Anyone can die!!! I read this entire book in two sittings!!! It would have been one, except I couldn't keep my eyes 👀open anymore!!! LOL. Could this really happen to today's world? Jack Hunt makes it seem very plausible. It does have some issues with editing but it's not really that bad. A definite 5 STAR book!!!! You won't want to put it down until you've finished it. Make sure you have lots of coffee ☕ handy when you get ready to start!!! I REALLY REALLY hope that there is a sequel to this book!!!!!! Thanks, Jack Hunt, for keeping us so fantastically entertained!!!!!
