As I’ve been revisiting the South Beach Diet, I’ve been trolling my library’s databases to see if I’ve missed any associated books. I was so pleased to see this book which was one I had not yet read. I realized that it was not written by Dr. Agatston, the creator of the South Beach Diet, but assumed this author had perhaps worked with Dr. A to write this book. That is not the case. This book, which appears to be self-published, needed to be reviewed by a proofreader to catch spelling errors. It also needs an index to help the reader find information and needed to be reviewed by an editor to catch errors such as Phase 1 recipes using “Foods to Avoid” and incomplete recipe directions. The chapter on “Phase 1 Sample Meal Plan” was not a meal plan but rather a collection of recipes purportedly following the South Beach Diet Phase 1 guidelines. However, the following ingredients, which are included in the recipes, are not allowed in Phase 1: apple, bacon, banana, beet, blackberries, cherries, coconut cream, coconut sugar, corn flour, honey, mango, oats, peach, peas, plantains, pumpkin, raisins, spring roll wrappers, sweet potato, and whole wheat orzo. The recipes need to show, or suggest, how many servings in order to be useful. The names of some of the recipes seem incomplete, for example: “Bake Avocado” and “Mushroom and Egg.” Some of the recipes are incomplete: “Steak Sandwich,” which instructs one to “spread the mustard on bread slices” yet never mentions bread in the ingredients list and “Pecan-Almond Butter,” which instructs one to add honey, yet never mentions honey in the ingredients list. My copy of this book was borrowed from the library. I am so, SO glad I did not buy this book. I found it no help at all. It reads like a quickly written mash of a quickly read South Beach book.
