   Zach King is weer terug! Meer magie! Meer dansfeestjes! Ik was echt helemaal blij toen ik zag dat een van mijn bibliotheken het boek had. Ik vond het eerste boek erg leuk om te lezen (alleen jammer van Tricia die zo'n stereotype was). In dit deel heeft Zach concurrentie, hij vindt meer uit over zijn krachten (al zijn er nog genoeg vragen en mysteries), we gaan tijdreizen (want ja zo zou ik het noemen, en niet die wazige uitleg die Zach ons probeert te vertellen (en die ik echt 5x heb gelezen, maa Zach King is weer terug! Meer magie! Meer dansfeestjes! Ik was echt helemaal blij toen ik zag dat een van mijn bibliotheken het boek had. Ik vond het eerste boek erg leuk om te lezen (alleen jammer van Tricia die zo'n stereotype was). In dit deel heeft Zach concurrentie, hij vindt meer uit over zijn krachten (al zijn er nog genoeg vragen en mysteries), we gaan tijdreizen (want ja zo zou ik het noemen, en niet die wazige uitleg die Zach ons probeert te vertellen (en die ik echt 5x heb gelezen, maar nog steeds niet helemaal snap, misschien is het de vertaling)), we hebben een dansfeestje, rodeo, en meer! Ik vond het vooral leuk dat we wat meer over Zach's krachten te weten komen. Geinig dat hij dat allemaal kan, alleen moet hij echt leren minder ego te hebben want hij kwam vaak in problemen omdat hij maar vond dat hij het zo moest kunnen, tja, zo werkt dat niet. Je familie heeft al hard genoeg gewerkt om de krachten goed in de hand te houden. Natuurlijk heb ik, en ook Zach, nog genoeg vragen. Wat is nou echt zijn toverkracht? Waarom gebeuren er soms dingen, zoals verdwijnen in een machine, of dat met die ijsblokjes? En tja, omdat meneer denkt dat hij alles wel zo goed kan, lag ik natuurlijk dubbel wanneer hij wederom uitvond dat het niet zo makkelijk was. En dan gaat het niet een beetje mis, nee, dan gaat het goed mis. Ik vond het ook lief van Zach dat hij zo zijn best deed voor Rachel. Zelfs al lukte het niet de eerste keer, hij bleef het proberen. Hogan, sorry, misschien omdat we dit boek vanuit Zachs POV zien, ik vertrouwde die jongen voor geen fluit. Hij was net iets te glad en glibberig voor mij. Ik had al meteen door dat die jongen problemen zou geven. Jammer vond ik dat ze hier in dit verhaal weer een cliche laten zien die ik al veel te vaak heb voorbij zien komen. Jongen probeert meisje te redden van iemand, heeft geen bewijs (of niet echt fysiek), maar blijft het wel proberen, meisje gelooft het niet en tja, dan gebeuren er dingen. En natuurlijk aan het einde: OMG x had gelijk. Ja, goh en dat duurde je lang zeg. *rolt met haar ogen* Ook vond ik die rector maar waardeloos. Waarom werkt hij eigenlijk met kinderen als hij er zo de pest in heeft? Ga dan lekker nu al met pensioen want je maakt het leven zuur van iedereen. Zoals met die kaartentruuk van Zach. Ja, dingen gingen mis, maar ik vond hem echt veel te overdreven gedragen. En sorry Rachel, ja, die jongen was eerst, maar moet je hem dan kiezen? Geef je Zach niet eens de kans? Wauw. Eventjes, ik zag op pagina 86 dat Gwen opeens paars haar had, in plaats van blauw. Of de illustrator heeft een foutje gemaakt, of Gwen heeft in zeer korte tijd haar haar helemaal anders gekleurd. Oh, en kan Aaron even ophouden met allerlei sausjes naar Zach te gooien? Een keer was leuk, twee keer was OK, maar na 3 keer had ik het wel gezien, en van mij mocht dat wel ophouden. Jammer alleen dat het door het hele boek gebeurde. *zucht* Het boek heeft ook illustraties, en ook strips, wat het boek leuk en dynamisch maakte. Ik moet wel even zeggen, en dit heeft met de vertaling te doen. Waar ik met het verhaal niet per se problemen had met de vertaling, waren de strips best, zoals ze dat in het Engels zeggen, cringy. Dus ja, ondanks wat dingetjes die ik minder vond, had ik toch veel plezier met lezen en ik kan niet wachten op het volgende avontuur. Zullen we daar nog meer te weet komen over Zach en zijn krachten? He has a big crush on Rachel, and wants to take her to the school dance, but he is beat to the punch by exotic exchange student Hogan, who does at least share some of Rachel's sports interests. When Zach tries to make his move at the dance to improve his position, things go badly wrong and he and friend Aaron get kicked out. Realizing that he has the residual power to use the magical objects of other members in his family, he borrows a device to copy his father's watch, which turns back time, and returns to the dance multiple times to try to reverse the damage. Instead, he makes things worse. Can he mange to correct his path before the watch disappears? And is the fact that he still has some magic a hopeful sign? While this is not technically a notebook novel, it does have the very heavy, glossy paper of a graphic novel, and has pages interspersed throughout with full color illustrations and the occasional comic strip sequence. The text is a good size, and the pages have a lot of white space. This might be why my reluctant readers were so keen for me to get the next book in the series! I appreciated that the story did have a brief plot, and was solidly middle grade. There are not enough funny books for middle school age boys that also have a light, age appropriate romance. I love that Rachel is interested in all manner of sports and is a very adventurous character, and Zach's attempts at impressing her are definitely true to life. Hogan is not a very nice character, and has some evil plans up his sleeve, but he's not irredeemable. I would love to see Aaron more fully fleshed out as a sidekick, but he serves his purpose well, along with his media loving cat. Zach's family, although they don't appear often, are delightful as well. I've never head of Mr. King and his YouTube videos, but apparently the target demographic has. Zach doesn't do a lot of magic in this book, aside from turning back time, but I imagine he will get his powers back in subsequent volumes, which will be fun to read!

   I like Zach King’s YouTube channel better than the book. But the book is okay. What I like about it are the pictures and the all of the people’s magical powers. But I didn’t like Zach disobeying his parents like it was okay to do. It wasn’t okay. I like the first book better.
