Rating 3.5 I really don't like it when the story changes right in the middle of a series. The first four books were all about Conryu and his friends. Everything pretty much revolved around them. In this book, Conryu is only mentioned maybe a couple of time. This is a story in the Aegis of Merlin universe but it is completely different from the first 4 books. The best word I could use to describe this book is to call it a filler. Everything that took place seems to just set up book 6. This is a story in the Aegis of Merlin universe but it is completely different from the first 4 books. The best word I could use to describe this book is to call it a filler. Everything that took place seems to just set up book 6. This story revolves around an 18 year old girl Anya, who lives in what we think of as Russia but is called the Dragon empire. In this country, by law every girl needs to test to see if they have magic when they turn 18 and if they due, they are taken from their family and turned into white witches (pretty much brainwashed soldiers for the empire). Anya mother has worked for the rebellion though and when Anya tests positive, she has a plan in place to escape. The whole story follows Anya flight across the land to get to London. While I didn't really mind the story, I have to call this a bait-and-switch tactic. I was wanting to read about Conryu, not Anya. While it did give me more perspective about the rest of the world and it will probably make me appreciate the next story more, I don't think what happened needed to take up the entire book. There was a little bit more complexity to the characters in this story though. (view spoiler)[ The agent for the empire had almost as much of the narration from his point of view as Anya's. I thought the agent was a good guy. I also thought that Anya was completely in the the right. I even some of the white witches despite all the evil things that they did. There really wasn't much of a right and wrong mentality in this culture. It was more of a do what you are told or you will probably die culture. (hide spoiler)] Not a bad story, but I am looking forward to reading about Conryu again and his progression in magic.

This is a sad story, it begun a bit like with Conryu's but The heroine toughed up in the middle of it. It was more like a transitory book than anything, we passed directly in the next Aegis of merlin book after this, it's important to read it! An interesting diversion in the series; no Conryu Corda at all! This book is out of the main sequence, and introduces another wizard (a russian earth-oriented girl) whose adventures lead her toward the Alliance and Conryu at the end. It's interesting because it shows up the wider world of the Aegis, the weirdly distorted history. Plus, of course, you've got russian resistance, which means badasses. And more Le Fay plot. Having an entire book where he doesn't show up at all except in a newspaper article felt better than the previous one.

Nicely Done and Eye-Opening Firstly, the book is very well-written and edited. Very good work there, especially with the pursued / pursuer POV switches. Also nicely done is the handling of each main character, making them much more interesting and sympathetic. Secondly, the story: Wow. We had some idea that the world outside America was different, but holee crap! We get our first visceral close-up of how things are globally, and it ain't pretty. Looks like the world could use a hero... Highly Recom Nicely Done and Eye-Opening Firstly, the book is very well-written and edited. Another Excellent Book in the Series This story while focusing on a new character has the same suspense as the other books in the series. This book opens up more of the world the series inhabits. You get to venture through several of the lands. A good edition to the series and a good way to introduce a new character and explain a back story.

Excellent spin-off from the main story! Anya's story was interesting, scary/dramatic at times, action packed and inspiring! I like that you can see how strong she is in this book, as her time in the main story line showed her as being more terrified, at least from the viewpoint of others. I hope we get to read more about her in the future, perhaps her own series. Excellent spin-off from the main story! Anya's story was interesting, scary/dramatic at times, action packed and inspiring! New characters New characters and far more world building than previous books. MC is definitely going to fall for Conryu, given that she is not a cardboard cutout I am all for this outcome. My only real criticism is last part of her arc feels rushed in regards toward her taking control of her life. Looking forward to Conryu meeting the Night Princes.

Another corner of the world where wizards are loyal only to the Czar. If your are a wizard, you must go. Anya has no choice but her mother and the resistance she didn't know about had other plans. This story is of her journey. Another corner of the world where wizards are loyal only to the Czar. This book had a really slow start and I struggled to get through it. The only reason I kept going was because it linked in with the next book of the series. The last chapters were probably the best part.

It would be a 3 star book but it felt more like a filler book than the 5th book in a series. The main point of this book is world building but I was just skimming through it because it was not really connected to the main story until the last 2 chapters.

A whole new world This side story takes us to Russia and a journey through Euope to England. A race to get a young girl to safety... Away from a dragon Czar - the head of Russia, through vampire ruled Romania and religious zealots burning up France . Highly recommend...
