Husband. Father. Son. Earl. Rupert Manning has thoroughly lost his way. Already resigned to a loveless marriage, he never expected that to be taken away from him too when his wife is murdered. Implicated her death unless he can clear his name, he’s determined to uncover her murderer and the secrets of her life—so that he too might be free to live the life he should have fo Husband. Father. Implicated her death unless he can clear his name, he’s determined to uncover her murderer and the secrets of her life—so that he too might be free to live the life he should have fought for. Five years ago Angelo Marinari limped away from his life gravely wounded and hid from everyone he’d ever known and loved. Now earning his way as a fighter and entertainer, Angelo is resigned to his life until fate lands the love of his life at his feet—bloody and beaten and breathtakingly defiant. Saving Lord Bracknell complicates everything but is he strong enough to abandon the earl twice when he and his son are in grave danger?

Nice Coda I wrote a review of the first five in this series because I was under the impression that it ended with Book 5. I guess I was wrong. This one brings back a lot of characters from several of the other books and it might pay to familiarize yourself with the blurbs of the others before plunging into this one. I guess I was wrong. This one brings back a lot of characters from several of the other books and it might pay to familiarize yourself with the blurbs of the others before plunging into this one. This is a somewhat dark and often elliptical ending (maybe?) to a brilliant series which takes place in Regency England and centers around men of the upper class who seek pleasure from other men, sometimes while they are engaged or married to women. In this one, we get a preview of the action to follow in a very good prologue which introduces us to Rupert Manning, a member of the realm, and Angelo Marinari, whose various tricks start in the prologue and veer wildly into other plots and deeds once we get into the narrative of the book itself which takes place about five years later. Nothing is ever as it seems in this one, which includes a suspected murder of Rupert's unfaithful wife, a bunch of other gruesome endings for nefarious characters, and a conflicted set of MCs who have never lost their hunger for each other which was set off, but not consummated, in the prologue. I really liked these two because they seem to be real for the era--their fears, hang-ups, loyalties and plain old stubbornness eventually get to an ending which is pretty much shocking and satisfying at the same time. Terrific series.
