Like all her previous stories, Beguiled By A Baron left me breathless, agonizing (in a good way), and entranced. And, as with all her books, I enjoyed a huge happy sigh at the end. Bridget Hamilton had spent her life cast out by her family. Her partial deafness and the birthmark marring her face had marked her as unworthy of the Hamilton name. She lived in a squalid cottage on the estate, raising her brother’s unwanted son, Virgil. Bridget loved Virgil as if he were her own and had sacrificed her life to protect him. But her brother, always chasing fortune and being hunted for money he owed, wasn’t just content with Bridget raising his by blow. He took advantage of Bridget’s skills with antiquated texts, having her evaluate scripts for a local bookkeeper. What little she made was split between her brother and caring for Virgil. Though not the life she would have dreamed of, Bridget was content with her peaceful existence. But her peace came to an end when her brother issued an ultimatum. Steal a valuable book for him or lose Virgil. Knowing Virgil would be stripped from her care and turned over to her soulless brother, Bridget had no choice but to comply. She would enter the home of Lord Chilton, masquerade as a servant, and rob him. Vail Basingstoke, Baron Chilton was known as the Bastard Baron. He didn’t care about the moniker. It was true. The bastard son of a self-serving duke who’d fathered countless children, Vail vowed he’d never be anything like his father. He’d become one of the most successful and ruthless booksellers in all of England. Owning one of the vastest collections of rare books, he brought them to auction making a fortune to care for his illegitimate siblings. Most of his collection was for re-sale purposes. Nothing was too important that couldn’t be sold to deepen his wealth. It was easier not becoming attached to anyone or anything. Vail was quite adept at dealing with the bookish members of the ton, stripping them of their control, and getting the best sum for his efforts. “Vail would lay down his life for his siblings. But where members of the peerage were concerned, he’d fleece them of their fortunes with a smile and sleep at night all the better for it.” When Bridget masquerades as Vail’s new housekeeper, she feels nervous and guilty, but also excited to work beside books she’d never touch in her life. It doesn’t take long for her skill with antique tomes to be noticed. Vail was surprised at the depth of her proficiency in texts and quickly realized she’d be better suited for his business than running his household. And so their camaraderie began poring over antiquated texts. Their attraction is almost immediate and it comes as a surprise to both of them. Vail was nothing like she’d expected. Nothing like her family. Where her family had been cruel to staff, Vail was kind. There were no questions or pitying statements about her birthmark and partial deafness. He didn’t treat her as though she were less because of her imperfections. He asked her opinion and he listened. Seeing how he cared for his siblings, when her own only wanted to forget her existence, made her lose a piece of her heart to him. Vail found Bridget refreshing. She showed no fear or reverence for his title. She was direct, clever, unique. He found himself sharing intimacies and details of his life he’d never shared with anyone. Questioning how he lived his life. He was captivated by her but he couldn’t lust after someone in his employ. That would make him just like his father. The pull Bridget had on him went against every moral standard he held himself to yet he couldn’t resist her. He had long prided himself on his restraint and self-control but he found he had none when she was around. He could no longer resist the need to take her in his arms and kiss her. Bridget had been told so often that no man would ever want her, that she’d believed it. Then Vail had kissed her and it had been the most erotic moment of her life. Her flaws stood out a stark contrast to Vail’s perfection, but he made her feel beautiful. The guilt about what she must do ate away at her. She was no better than her horrid family. She was a thief. Vail was different from every other peer. A war hero. A man of character. A paragon. This man had moved from stranger to honorable, admirable gentleman, to the man she loved. Yet the only thing that could save her son was to betray Vail. I fell in love with Bridget and Vail immediately. They were destined for one another. Both had lived the cruelties of the world relying on themselves and no one else. It had caused each to have a distorted view of the world. But the bond they formed challenged everything they previously believed about others and about themselves. Vail had loved before and been rejected. He’d seen first- hand the horrors people could do to one another. He’d learned to keep his guard up and let on one in. But Bridget slipped in. She saw so much more than the Baron Bastard. She saw things he’d not even known about himself. She managed to pull his darkest secrets from him and challenge him. She showed him that the world wasn’t just black or white, good or bad. That all people were simply people, flawed and doing their best to survive in an uncertain world. Where he had blamed himself for the lives his siblings had endured, she showed him how he had changed their lives for the better. Bridget had come to London believing all men were driven by material wants and incapable of goodness. Her family had made her feel as though she were less because of her physical imperfections. But Vail changed that. He was so different from any peer she’d known. He was an honorable man who cared so much for his family, seeing worth in each of them. And in Bridget too. He’d treated her as an equal. Where she’d seen only her limitations, Vail had opened her eyes to her own self- worth. As I said before, each Christi Caldwell book I read is my favorite until the next one comes out. But I found this one especially exceptional. I was in awe of the amount of research she must have done. Her knowledge of early texts and what’s involved in evaluating rare books was simply remarkable. And I was delighted with the way she worked Petrosinella into the ending. If you’re looking for the ultimate escape into historical romance, this is it. At least until Christi Caldwell writes her next book. A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection

This was the life Bridgett lived. Her brother then cast aside his by blow and Bridget at 17 became the child's mother. Her brother Archibald, the Marquess of Atbrooke, always threatened her with the loss the the child. So as victim, when her brother comes up with a scheme to steal a rare book, she must comply. She is set up as a housekeeper for Vail Basingstoke, Baron Chilton. When Vail proves himself a hero at Waterloo he is awarded the title Baron. Vail is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Ravenscourt and thus called the Bastard Baron. He has an extremely lucrative business as a dealer of rare books. He has been increasing his fortune in order to locate and care for all his illegitimate siblings also fathered by Ravenscourt. Bastard or no he is a man of integrity. When Bridget is hired as his new housekeeper a widow, he is very intrigued by her. He never sees any deformity. Bridget has been living a life always considering herself unacceptably. This was the mantra she has been told since childhood. Vail quickly sees that Bridget is quite the expert on rare books. He finds her backgrounds quite the enigma. The more Bridget gets to know Vail and his family background she regrets the deal with her brother but is trapped by the possible loss of her child. She is falling in love with Vail and regrets all the lies she has been telling him. This is where this author excels. She can analyze the troubling thoughts of her characters and you follow along for the ride. You want to see how she can fix their problems and let the attractions and love bloom. This book was so packed with twists and turns and I am always amazed at her talent. I'm going to say this was one of my favorite books by Ms Caldwell. As a historical romance reader they don't get better than this. A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection

At seventeen Bridget's life forever changer, her brothers discarded liver shows up with his son and Bridget taking him to London in hopes he'll do right by the babe. Showing his true colors he denies the boy and sends Bridget, shell raise the baby herself. Through the years he'd show up to cause problems and belillte her but know he demands to much, steal a book from Chilton or he'll take Virgil away. Posing as the new housekeeper Bridget soon sees that the rumors of Vail are false and Vail sees that she has a vast knowledge of antiquated books. Vail can't stop thinking of Bridget. Her intelligence and beauty makes him want her but with the knowledge that he maybe more like his father then ever and with a past heartbreak he's vowed never to love again. Bridget starts to want things she always known were out of her grasp but how will Vail ever forgive her for her lies and deceit. Can Vail see that there is more then what's on the surface and get passed the walls he's built. I loved all the characters and how Vail cares for his siblings, I wish Gavin would of had more page time he was so endearing. *Book Obsessed Chicks Review team

This story had such strong characters in Vail and Bridget. Vail was all you would want in a hero, strong, noble and such a caring nature towards his siblings. Soooo good! Such interesting characters, great story, good angst! I usually struggle with the notion of people falling in love so quickly but it felt real and believable here. I loved how Vail helped Bridget see that she is so much more than her awful family taught her she is! I am reading this series out of order, cherrypicking the ones that cater to my favorite tropes, but I'll probably end up reading them all. Christi Caldwell is a new fave! (4.5 stars) Soooo good! She, of course, immediately enthralls our hero and huzzah, the feeling is mutual. Christi Caldwell has hit it out of the park with this novel. The Baron has indeed beguiled me and everyone else who reads this book. Who needs a rake or a rogue when Vail is around? He's everything that is honorable as opposed to his careless and ruthless sire, the Duke of Nasty (Ravenscourt). Bridget is everything that is good and pure as opposed to her horrid siblings, serial rapist Archibald Hamilton, Marquess of Atbrooke and the criminally insane vixen, Lady Marianne Carew, again disproving the popular Regency saying, "blood will tell." Bridget's "crimes" are motivated by love and desperation. Her redemption is ensured. There is so much to love about this novel. You would think that at 14 installments Caldwell's "Heart of a Duke" series would become trite and formulaic. Ha! It has not happened. It just keeps getting better. We continue to meet new characters that spark our curiosity and imagination. The Duke of Nasty is so prolific, Caldwell could continue to write about his progeny until well into her dotage. The only problem is that I might not live to see the end of this saga. Buy this book! Read this book! You will not be disappointed.

But this "un" compromising, undaunted, and unflagging young woman makes her own life and family and supports herself using her mind. But there is a conflict with a family member who just can't seem to cease abusing Bridget. This is how she meets Vail, the hero of the story. As this is a series of books, and a terrific one at that, Vail has been a character in previous stories and is strong, purposeful, and obsessed with his business. The plot throws these two people together and Vail doesn't have all the facts about Bridget, but they are drawn into intrigue, and to each other. The story is wonderful, with rich descriptions of their lives and characters that only add to the tale. I highly recommend this book and have read the entire series. This book is one of the best, as this reader was UNable to put it down.

I love Ms. Caldwell's Heart of a Duke series. This one is another WINNER by Ms. Caldwell. Beguiled by a Baron is #14 in her HOAD series. Ms. Caldwell again had me on an emotional roller coaster with Vail and Bridget. I sympathized with both Vail and Bridget. I got teary more than once. Which is normal for me with a Christi Caldwell book. I have a new 'Regency' book boyfriend in Vail Basingstoke. I loved how smart he was. He seemed to be a Regency version of a HOT nerd. I also loved his relationship with all his siblings. And Virgil. Which made him even sexier. And Bridget was just as intelligent. They were a perfect match. I loved seeing Bridget again. Her siblings? Ugh! I liked Nettie. And Virgil, her son/nephew she was raising was a cutie. I !liked his relationship with Vail! Another Hit! I received a copy for an honest review.

Another magical book by Christi Caldwell. From the first words, I felt myself wanted to wrap protective arms around Bridget and Virgil and never let any harm come to them. Bridget is a strong, smart and talented heroine. She is beautiful, inside and out. Vail has a purpose in life. He works to build his fortune so he can do good and provide better lives for his family. Both are wounded in matters of the heart, yet, love always finds a way. Once started, I could not stop flipping the pages. I actua Another magical book by Christi Caldwell. I actually had to read the last couple of pages several times because the first time brought tears to my eyes. The second time made me smile. The third made me sigh. If you have never read a Christi Caldwell book, I encourage you to start here. It's wonderful. If you're a fan like me, then you know how magical this book really is. I hope you enjoy.

This story has connections with book thirteen; To Enchant a Wicked Duke, the story of Vail's friend Nick Tallings. **Sexual content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...

THE TENSEST SO FAR! There has always been an element of suspense in Christi Caldwell's books - will love come right, will the evil person get their comeuppance, how can a seemingly evil person (say, the Marquis of Rutland) be redeemed. This time, the suspense rather overshadowed the love story for me. The characters were, perhaps, stronger than usual. The evil brother - has no redeeming features. The task at hand is destroying the heroine, who is more crippled than usual (at least in her mind). T THE TENSEST SO FAR! Love It! This is a fabulous journey of a young ladies life. Being shuttered off to a cottage on her parents property, the four year old daughter of a Marguis, to live the rest of her life dead to society, because she is not perfect! Desperation makes people do desperate things. Bridget was an outcast in her own family. They turned their backs on her due to a birthmark on her face and lack of hearing. This book was so beautiful! Bridget must make decisions that no matter what she does will leave destruction in her wake. Vail has been so focused in taking care of everyone that he refuses to open himself up to love. Bridget was such a lier by the end of the story it began to take away my feelings of sympathy for her. She was also struck deaf and dumb at critical points in the story, not in keeping with the character. The hero Vail had patience and she was lucky he stood by all the lies that came of of her mouth. Lying was so easy for her. The book was well written, but I took away a star because the author made me feel like Vail should have thrown her out on the street. He was a good man to his family too.

Loved Bridget and Vail Great Story and so much could go wrong, I love that Christi Caldwell doesn't treat her characters or readers as if they are a bit on the brainless side. She allows them to try and think through decisions and not assume they will always make the worst choices. It is wonderful to see characters from her previous books and how she incorporates them into her stories. Beguiled by a Baron I loved this one! I can’t find words to describe this properly. You have a neglected woman named Bridget who is forced to do a deed she does not want to do. Her mean brother makes her steal a book from Vail. Vail is a baron who has spent his years finding his siblings to make sure they do not struggle as he had growing up. So he sells rare books to make a living for himself and his family. Bridget is tasked with stealing a rare book from Vail. So she poses as his maid. You’ll Beguiled by a Baron I loved this one! All I can say is Wow! Christi Caldwell had me from the first page. Bridgett, desperate not to lose her son, goes to work as a housekeeper to still an original Chaucer from Vail, Baron Chilton . She knows that her' s and the life of her son depends on this one act of deception. What she didn't plan on is a man like Vail. We all know where this is going to but the twist and turns to get there are engaging and at times frustrating but it is well worth the ride. All I can say is Wow! This romance novel between a partially deaf spinster with a birthmark on her face and a baron who was elevated to the peerage due to battlefield heroics was just kind of okay for me. She masquerades as a housekeeper in order to steal a rare book from him, as she is being blackmailed by a pretty awful person. For over half the book I was just wondering "why is she still doing this?" It's a decent story but the dishonesty felt too over the top. It would have been fairly easy to come clean. Threads we weave! Ms Caldwell has added another thread to her tapertry of characters. Virgil was a wonderful touch to the story. Children quite often see the true character of an adult and for once we get to see an adult listen and act on a child's information. I love this story but so many of the previous thirteen novels were just as good. Threads we weave! Ms Caldwell has added another thread to her tapertry of characters.
