    Joel Everett

This was an interesting book. It is essentially a criticism of action taken by early Trustees and Presidents at Stanford in contravention of the initial wishes of the Founders Leland and Jane Lathrop Stanford. Of ancillary interest is the focus on higher education as a means of social service via the promotion of the ideal of 'co-operation'. There is also a historical tension between religious Deism and the push for Academic Freedom on the university campus.
