Star Trek: The Early Voyages Part 1. Part of Zavvi’s Threads box for October 2020, which was Star Trek galore. But due to it arriving late and reading over things it moved down my reading list. The main part of this graphic novel centres around Christopher Pike. The Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk. With the character getting his own time in the spot light soon with spin off show Strange New Worlds, this is a perfect read to get you familiar with the character. In the Original Series of Star Star Trek: The Early Voyages Part 1. Part of Zavvi’s Threads box for October 2020, which was Star Trek galore. With the character getting his own time in the spot light soon with spin off show Strange New Worlds, this is a perfect read to get you familiar with the character. In the Original Series of Star Trek we don’t get to see much of Pike. This is a welcome addition as it fleshes out his character. It will be interesting to see if any of the stories collected here make to screen in some form. Like the Original Series, the stories here are standalone with no overarching plot. You don’t really need much prior knowledge of the universe to enjoy this. The artwork is very colourful and bright, reminiscent of the classic pop art, but brining the modern flair of adding the extra layer of detail, especially to the characters and the space scenes. Collected here as a bonus, not part of the main story we also have more Gold Key Archives Star Trek that focuses on the Original Series crew or Kirk, Spock etc. This time, The Legacy of Lazarus. A story part mad scientist, part run in with historical figures. Very much classic cheesy Trek. A lot of fun and not hard to imagine as a lost episode from the show. This having the classic bright pop art of the 70’s era from which it originates.

The beginning of a series dealing with Christopher Pike and the pre-Kirk crew with some nice tie-ins to the original series. The stories themselves aren’t earth shattering, but better than average comic book fare. The classic Gold Key #9 with Len Wein taking over the writing chores (for this and the next seven issues) is also an improvement; I’m looking forward to the upcoming issues.
