I absolutely love Leanne's approach! This book is so much fun and interesting to read with lots of useful information. I have been following this plan for six days now and I am thoroughly impressed with my progress so far and how helpful this book is. It is like a one-stop guide to all things keto and I absolutely love and appreciate that the plan is totally customizable and tailored to my individual needs. I found the book to be very informative, simple to follow and understand! And the author is Canadian which makes it a little easier knowing that the ingredients are easily accessible and where to purchase them. I was able to find most of the ingredients with no problem at all. Which is always a plus when following a healthy eating plan. I'm new to this whole keto thing but I can tell that the approach laid out by Leanne Vogel is wonderful. She does not lay out regimented ideas and does not require all that macro tracking. As someone who can fall into the perfectionist category with all it's stress and anxiety, I am thrilled to have an approach like hers to try. The book is so much fun to read! So far I've made fat bombs and her Rocket Fuel Latte and they are my go to breakfast and it's been awesome to switch over from plain green tea and a lara bar. I'm excited to try her other recipes and maybe even one of the several great looking plans she has laid out in the book. I don't normally read cookbooks from cover to cover nor do I ever really rate them here but this one I felt needed a shout out. Fun and encouraging!

You just can’t please everyone. My sister highly recommended the keto diet, specifically Vogel’s version, and judging by her new gusto for life (shed a few pounds, sleeping deeply, waking up alert, not needing a nap in the afternoon!) I decided my hubby and I would do ONE LAST EATING PLAN.* What I liked about this book: 1. Super duper science. I can’t tell you if it all checks out, but Vogel is a Nutritionist and gives lots of background about fat vs. protein vs. carbs. 2. Everyone is different, so You just can’t please everyone. I can’t tell you if it all checks out, but Vogel is a Nutritionist and gives lots of background about fat vs. protein vs. carbs. 2. Everyone is different, so take this knowledge and rework it to fit you! (Also: apparently other keto formats treat men and women the same, and we are waaaay more complicated because of the whole baby making machine thing.) So, if we didn’t like one recipe, we could rework it (using Vogel’s guidelines) to fit our own style. 3. Well organized, and pretty easy to follow. What wasn’t the best: 1. This book is for people with very flexible schedules (e.g. work from home, perhaps?) and for those crazies who don’t mind spending a LOT of time in the kitchen. I can’t see how a couple who work full time could achieve this crazy diet. And with kids! Yeesh. 2. If you are used to making everything from scratch/ enjoy a lot of cooking and prep, then go nuts! Luckily my husband is the cook, and there were some pretty low energy days where I had no idea where the kitchen WAS let alone what to do when I got there. 3. Repetitive recipes. I respect Vogel for trying to not waste food, but we ended up making the same meals a few times the first week, alongside lots of leftovers. Also: THE PORK. Dear lord, the pork. Not to mention we cooked 3 pounds of bacon in 4 days. For 2 people. 4. The expense. Which I won’t throw Vogel under the bus for, as it seems like a few of these elimination diets ask for a lot of supplements, etc. Plus you are eating all meals at home (which is better for you, really. We don’t miss eating out so much!) Let me tell you: Keto is really hard. I’m on day 9 only because my husband is stubborn and wouldn’t let me run screaming into the streets. (Apparently my sister had a similar melt down around day 7... she still said to stick it it!) I’ll update this if I’m drinking their Kool-aid in 4 weeks.... If you are switching from Paleo to Keto, you won’t have much of a problem, it seems, especially as this is a Keto-Paleo hybrid. I can’t imagine the work this book would take. Not merely a heathy cookbook, but 5 variations of eating plans to best suit our individual needs. Plus explaining all the explainy bits. We definitely appreciate Vogel’s layouts and reasoning behind them. I can’t wait to feel good. I don’t feel AS BAD as a few days ago, but I’m not singing from mountaintops. Keto-onward ho! UPDATE (Day 12): we’re out. I’m calling it. I want to eat better, but this didn’t fit my personal body or style. We know we wouldn’t keep it up after 28 days, so we’re taking a page from Voegel, book and making our own plan to fit us. I’m happy for you Keto-ians out there. Personally, I can’t wait to like the smell of bacaon again... in a loooong time... *We had previously tried Paleo and Whole30

Love Leanne's Approach! I tried keto before and while I felt great initially, I ended up getting really anxious and frustrated because I was stressing myself out over macros and what I wasn't "allowed" to eat. Leanne's approach is so much healthier for me and leaves me feeling positive and hopeful. Love Leanne's Approach! So here's the thing about keto...you are already eating Whole Foods (it just keeps autocorrecting to the proper name, yes, we know Amazon, you bought the store) nothing processed. You are already spending far more time cooking than you did before. You are losing weight like gangbusters, peeing on keto sticks, etc. Why oh why would you give up what makes this diet (sorry: lifestyle)so easy to follow? Why would you eliminate the dairy?!? Why make the recipes way more complicated and harder to make So here's the thing about keto...you are already eating Whole Foods (it just keeps autocorrecting to the proper name, yes, we know Amazon, you bought the store) nothing processed. Why make the recipes way more complicated and harder to make than they have to be? Because there is no dairy. This book should be titled "The non-dairy keto diet". There was not one recipe that was appealing. I appreciated the diet break-down, the overall tone of the writing, even the graphics. I appreciate that not everyone can tolerate dairy-but this book is completely one sided and not versatile enough. There are other books out there that are far better companions in the kitchen, for keto newbies and veterans alike

I think the author did a great job organizing the book, making it easy to follow. She did a great job of giving alternatives for so many things, and referring back to where you could look at more details. For example, when looking at grocery lists and meal plans, she refers you back to the pages about each diet plans pages. She uses a high-speed blender, but tells you cheaper alternatives. Her diet is non-GMO, and grass-fed, pasture free, organic everything. But she gives some practical alternat I think the author did a great job organizing the book, making it easy to follow. Her diet is non-GMO, and grass-fed, pasture free, organic everything. But she gives some practical alternatives, such as buying regular meat, lean and adding your own oils to make them leaner. The problem I have is her use of weird ingredients - such as making muffins from ground flax seeds. All I can say about those muffins is they were edible, but I would have enjoyed eggs more. I don't want to drink coffee or tea with oil in it. She does have a page of one pot recipes that I really like and think I would do better with that - it's along the line of pick a vegetable, a meat, an oil, a seasoning and stir fry, but with enough details to make it follow the keto diet plan. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to follow a keto diet, and doesn't mind either counting nutrients or following a meal plan with oddball recipes. I tried the counting macros for a couple weeks, and got tired of it. I tried the meal plan, and got through one breakfast.

This book offers a great background and a ton of information on the keto diet. My main issue is that most of the recipes have no flavour. Even adding in the spices that are recommended and adding more, a lot of things simply taste bland. The pancake recipe itself tastes like a combination of fat and salt. If you’re starting the keto diet take this book for background information, but not for the recipes.

I haven’t lost any weight because I lack the discipline but this book is very informative for anyone interested in the diet and the recipes I’ve tried were actually really tasty.

This is not exactly a vegan keto cookbook, but that seems to be a theme. I did find a recipe or two calling for eggs, but mostly not. The layout is really colorful & interesting and chockfull of information with color photos. A gelatin/water mixture was used to replace eggs. Directions say to let the gelatin sit on the water for 5 minutes before heating up. In that 5 minutes time, the gelatin was jelling up and created a bit of a problem mixing - it could be done, but a lot of effort. I eat dairy & eggs, so once I uncovered the secret semi-vegan conspiracy, I just re-substituted eggs and butter.. The Crusty Sandwich Bread's main "grain" is psyllium husk powder. A photo of our bread below. The keto carrot cake turned out amazing after I added back all the dairy and eggs. Photo below. I didn't try the tortillas, but am intrigued by the non-vegan pork rind ingredient to make it work. I'll try that next, then update. (I've successfully posted photos in other reviews and am not sure why these are not working. I'll figure it out eventually.) [image error] [image error]

Even though I haven't started eating the keto diet yet, I think this book is very informative even if you just want to eat healthier. It gives a lot of information on a lot of topics for you to make an informed decision on what and how to eat. She gives several different ways to do things, including several different ways to do the keto diet. Funny snippets thrown in as well. I haven't tried the recipes out yet either, but I will very soon. Even though I haven't started eating the keto diet yet, I think this book is very informative even if you just want to eat healthier. This book is very comprehensive and detailed. I like the fact that she lists pages in her recipes when you need to add, say homemade mayonnaise to your recipe and where it can be found. I have read many books on food choices related to health. For me, life-changing books have been about eating for your blood type, eating food that is in season, dieting while not slowing down metabolism, preparing grains, nuts, legumes and seeds properly, eating only non-GMO foods, and eating according to one of the 12 metabolic types. Each book has made a significant improvement in my health, changing my ideas about man-made foods and government-inspired harmful food pyramids and food industry I have read many books on food choices related to health. For me, life-changing books have been about eating for your blood type, eating food that is in season, dieting while not slowing down metabolism, preparing grains, nuts, legumes and seeds properly, eating only non-GMO foods, and eating according to one of the 12 metabolic types. Each book has made a significant improvement in my health, changing my ideas about man-made foods and government-inspired harmful food pyramids and food industry propaganda. This is another life-changing book. For so long, people have been told to eat harmful fats and to reduce fat while increasing carbs, even if they are heavily processed. Now the public is becoming interested and informed about the proper healthful consumption of fats. Many best sellers have been written on the ketogenic diet. This diet is to restore and promote health. It is not intended as a weight loss program, although with proper health and the removing of carbohydrate cravings, weight should normalize by itself. I have read with interest some of these books but could never get a keto food plan to work for me until I read Leanne's book. Why? Because most of the Keto books are written by men and most of them did not have eating disorders. Leanne has the experience of her own radical health improvement after recovery from eating disorders by using a keto diet. But she first had to deal with the hormonal fluctuations that make keto eating almost impossible for some women--the intense carb cravings, not lasting through the night without waking up from hunger, and not being able to delay breakfast for short intermittent fasting. She accomplishes this with her "rocket fuel" high fat, low carb beverage that does not trigger insulin or stop fat-burning, and so does not "count" as a meal to the body. This beverage makes it possible to eat a ketogenic diet without difficulty. Because she understands the hormonal problems of women, unlike any other keto diet author I have read, she has designed 5 programs according to a person's individual needs. She teaches the reader (and her clients) how to listen to their own bodies and to adapt the program to serve their bodies. So there are strict keto diets as well as 3 programs with increasing levels of carb-up's and a transitional program for someone who will never succeed at abruptly changing eating habits. I have never seen this in any other keto book. In addition, she accomplishes this all without counting macros or calories. Her recipes are simple. She has month long plans for each of the 5 individual programs. She uses leftovers and freezing and simplified techniques to make meal times quick. But her meals are tasty. For most of the books that I have read with eating plans, whether to deal with yeast problems, inflammation, metabolism, blood types, etc., in order to find recipes, ingredients, instructions, etc., I have had to go through the books and tabulate recipes, ingredients, ratios, calories, and my "forbidden" ingredients, etc. By the time I get finished with a book, it is full of chicken scratching and bent pages. Not so with this book. You can select any program and find in a table the suitable recipes. The tables and recipes will provide other information such as making the recipe nightshade-free, FODMAP free, egg-free, autoimmune protocol acceptable, etc. About the only thing that it does not include is blood type ingredient labeling. But that is not all about this excellent book. This book has probably the highest standard of any book I have ever read. The pages are thick and not easily damaged by spills or splatters. There are color illustrations. Macro ratios are calculated. So you could simply read the second half of the book and follow this eating plan successfully. But the first half of the book explains the intricacies of the body's response to food, especially fats. It explains the science behind keto eating. It explains how to shop for foods, detailing the differences in label meanings, making brand name recommendations and providing sources for difficult-to-find foods such as grass-fed and grass-finished meats or non-GMO organic canola oil. It explains short cuts so that a keto meal can be made in 10 minutes from start to finish. It explains how to eat in restaurants and how to eat when traveling. It explains how to tell when you are in ketosis without doing all of the expensive and complicated ketone testings, how to tell which of the 5 programs is most suitable for you, how to know when to change from one program to another, how to match exercise to programs, and just about anything else that you need to know about keto eating. For people who are visual learners, much of the content is summarized in brightly colored tables which simplify the text. Symbols rather than words make it fast and simple to make comparisons and to find what you are looking for. I have never written a review of a book of this type, but this book is so exceptional. Other books may be equal in theoretic content or even in practical applications. But none of them have succeeded in simplifying... with success for her clients and readers... the ketogenic process while adapting it to individuals, especially females. The major problem with almost every book of this type that I have read is the "One size fits all." attitude toward diets. That does not work. Each person's metabolism is different. Leanne helps the reader to realize that she is responsible and able to listen to her body and provide it with its needs; for many readers, their carb requirements are much higher than those recommended in other programs but unless they receive these extra carbs, they will not go into ketosis. I think this is the biggest secret to success in this book. Theory is fine. Charts and tables and recipes and macro counts are fine. But if you go through a book and do everything it says, but you are driven crazy by cravings after 2 days, your health suffers, you wear out and the book ends up in the garbage, despite its theory and pretty pictures and many recipes, well, that has been a waste of your life. When your body craves carbs and you have had enough fat, for some people the carb levels must be increased. I think that Leanne consumes more than the recommended carbs on some days, but she does it when her body needs it. And she stays in ketosis... No other book that I have read has explained this and made it work. Not only does Leanne say that in these circumstances, you should have more carbs, but she also says that you need them and they are good for you and you will stay in ketosis. Leanne has a plan to make it possible to eat extra carbs when necessary but not get off the keto diet. Other books do explain how it is harmful to remain on the severely restricted carb levels of most keto diets and how to include some carb-up days. But they do not make it as clear and simple as Leanne does. If you have not been successful at eating keto and have felt like giving up, give it one more try, this time with Leanne's book. Or watch her Youtube channel. This ketogenic lifestyle might be the missing link for you. I wish that I had found her book first before purchasing other books and trying their frustrating methods that never dealt with women's hormonal problems or individual body types. Almost instantly, eating a ketogenic diet went from difficult to easy. The best comment that can be said of any book is "It works." This book "works".

Pros: she has a trouble-shooting section that answers questions about weird side effects of Keto. She also gives options for different "types" of Keto diets, with the %s of protein, fats and carbs. She has options for folks who don't eat diary - yes! Cons: she makes it look hard, like a micro-managing diet hell. (unless you love doing that with your meals). This book has so much more than just recipes in it's pages! I LOVED reading through all of the information. Some of it, I already read before, and some I didn't know. This is definitely THE keto book that you want to read, not only if you're a beginner, but even if you've done the keto lifestyle for a while, this book is packed with useful information. I wasn't a big fan of several of the recipes included, but won't let that take away from the 5 star review. The writing style is laid back and she doesn't make things clear and easy to comprehend. I don't usually read cookbooks/diet books cover-to-cover, but I did read this one fully. I'd never heard of the author's website, but I'm planning to start keto and saw this one recommended. I liked the tone. I liked the focus on what keto is and the food science behind it working. I hadn't seen the "carb up" version of keto in my other readings, but it does make sense from both an eating and a cravings standpoint, so I will file that away in my head. However, I was really thrown off by her sudden anti-GMO opinions near the end of the written piece. Since GMOs are generally accepted by the scientific majority to not be a negative issue as a process (see: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/23/we...), the anti-GMO attitude in this book made me doubt whether everything else I had just read that I was less familiar with could be trusted from a scientific standpoint. This book also advocates for a non-dairy keto diet, similar to Paleo (I will also note that she kept making references to Paleo, but since I had never read about Paleo before I didn't know what she was talking about). I know it's a route some folks will take with their keto, but it's not what I am interested in doing myself since dairy isn't a problem for me. That said, a lot of the recipes make more substitutions than I would want to make to avoid dairy, so may not be as relevant to me. The end verdict? I think it was a good beginning write up all about keot, but can't be sure as even with the references I can't tell which parts are fact and which are opinion. The recipes look good and I may use a few of them, plus some of the beginning info. I would recommend the recipes more to other people doing dairy-free keto.

This book was helpful, and the graphics at the beginning were really helpful with learning about the diet. Having said that, part of the book were kind of all over the place and it was hard to follow at times, especially for someone not familiar with the keto diet. The cookbook section was... well. Leanne wrote several times that she likes quick recipes and she's not a huge fan of cooking, but... yeah, these aren't quick recipes. Like, none of them. Maybe some of the fat bomb recipes are quick. But none of the actual meals are quick, and a lot of them require items that I had to seek out on Amazon because they were so difficult to find (like collagen peptides, and Swerve). Leanne discourages dairy and I didn't like that. I LIKE cheese, and cheese is totally allowable on the keto diet. So a lot of her recipes required unusual ingredients (like coconut milk or coconut cream) because she avoids dairy. And again, I'm sure that's GREAT for some people, but the book wasn't advertised as a non-dairy keto diet, so I didn't really like that. I will definitely continue to use some of her recipes - I really liked the herb blend recipes and some of the fat bomb recipes. But since I've read this, I've ordered two other keto books with "easier" recipes, and I've relied on Pinterest a lot more than I have this cookbook. Still, I learned a lot and it was informative, and I don't regret reading it - I just don't have enough time to cook her meals, with a full time job and a toddler.

I REALLY like her. Her enthusiasm is wonderful, the layout is so incredibly enjoyable, and I looked forward to reading it each day. I'm super thankful I came across this in Costco, and she's instilled a lot of confidence and enthusiasm in me to try fat-adapting my body. I’ve made numerous recipes and loved them all. I can’t imagine writing this tome, I’m super impressed with its scope. I cannot say enough how much I appreciate this book. Much love to Leanne, and apologies for my criticisms which I’ll add below... There are some minor mistakes, like not listing coconut oil for sautéeing (am I wrong?), but later listing it for her roasted pan at 400F when it's smoke point is 350. And at one point there's a sentence that reads as if all grains have gluten. Super small errors, apologies for my love of editing. As well, I think some of the claims, while perhaps true anecdotally, might be overstated from a scientific evidence perspective. As well, though the paleo approach seems to works for me, I feel like aspects of the diet may be overstated in this book. For example, from the doctors I listen to (Mark Hyman, Chris Kresser, Rangan Chatterjee), it seems like the verdict is not fully in on using saturated fats liberally (as suggested in the book)... only that certain versions are good for us and we shouldn't fear them as we used to. That said, I’m not going to town on them, but I’m also not scared of them.

This was a very thorough look at the Keto diet. Leeanne does a great job explaining everything in great detail. That part of the book was great for me. If you are already knowledgable in Keto and know how to prepare Keto meals, this might not be for you. This book would be great for you if you are completely new to this diet, or if you have a lot of food intolerances. She is great for including dairy free, gluten free, ppl who suffer from IBS symptoms and such. Personally I have had to explore more on the internet for some things as I don't want to go completely without things like milk and cheese but I am glad to have such a thorough analysis of the ketogenic diet.

This is best considered as two books: a comprehensive introduction and guide to the ketogenic way of eating, and a cookbook for a specific way of following the ketogenic diet--namely the dairy-free way. I give the first part a wholehearted 5 stars. The explanations are thorough, her tone is warm and engaging without being cloying, and the various tip sheets are super helpful. It's a great reference that I recommend to anyone curious about keto. The cookbook portion, however, I'd have to give just 3 stars, as eliminating all dairy makes things tricky (and less appealing) for those of us who'll give up our cheese when you pry it from our cold dead hands. I'll admit that my being a somewhat picky eater makes some of these recipes and the meal plans a no go, so that's on me. However, I have tried a few of the recipes (buffalo chicken tots were very tasty) and found them pretty good.

4.5. Very informative with several different approaches and strategies to implement the Keto diet. I appreciate that she acknowledges and speaks to eating disorders and has designed the plan to account for that, something I seldom see in this kind of book. I also appreciate that she adds carb ups and addresses how the Keto diet can be challenging for some with good strategies that can make even the most reluctant feel they can be successful on at least one of her plans. The only negative is that 4.5. Very informative with several different approaches and strategies to implement the Keto diet. The only negative is that the recipes I’ve tried haven’t been great though I’ll be trying her bread this week and if they’re good I’ll come back and edit and push it to a 5 star rating. (It’s only fair to add though that I’m finding this a problem with most of the Keto cookbooks I own. My husband has to eat very low fat and the recipes that look good have a generous amount of it so it puts me in a quandary) Highly recommend this book for those wanting to implement the Keto diet but are unsure where to start.

The information on the keto diet was really useful in this book. I previously followed Dave Asprey and the bulletproof diet but found it to be too male-centric. I like the Rocket Fuel Latte but other than that, most of what I made from the book are simply awful, bland and just not thought out properly. It feels like she put the recipes together to make them keto compliant without thinking of the taste--or maybe my own tastes are different. Because of this I am hesitant to purchase her new one that's out now. I love the recipes on the bulletproof blog--much better and I adjust my macros by adding low GI carbs when I need a carb up.

Even though I've done a lot of research and had a bunch of real-life experiences with keto, this book had everything I wanted in a keto resource! The recipe section had a bunch of new ideas that I had not seen from other keto bloggers and vloggers, and there were easy variations with every recipe. The only downside (for me) was that all the recipes were dairy-free, and some (maybe 4) are difficult to parse how to sub in cream cheese or sour cream or heavy cream instead. The other downside was a lot of "add avocado" or "add mayo" to fill out a plate or up the fat content, but I eat neither of those foods. Overall, very great resource, lots of good info about managing your health in relation to keto, the best carb-up guide and plan out there, and plenty of original recipes. I loved it.

This book gave me the foundation I needed to learn how to eat properly and now I can make my own spin on things so that I eat better. (also, I'm down 20 pounds and have a lot more energy at the gym, so that helps). Definitely recommend this as a starting book for anyone looking into the ketogenic diet.
