A tale in which, Gentle Reader, an innocent American couple wanders wide-eyed across Europe amid scads of merciless admission-fee collectors and pitiless vista-spoilers through all the finer sights of the Old World, as she happily photographs every depopulated vista, and he mutters beneath an enormous pack of life support, fumbling with maps, guidebooks, and bales of not-quite-worthless Italian lire. In action, we were hardy adventurers. Each day we set out to visit the sights of the day. Day after day—by foot, subway, cab, tram, whatever it took—we marched, from museum to church to palace to statue to shrine—10 miles every day over cobblestones, and me with full backpack. In it I would start out with just the bare necessities: documents, money, bottled water, film, camera, and toilet paper—maybe five pounds. But Gabriela bought souvenir picture books as we went, and it got heavier all day long. And when we reached our room each evening, it weighed 30 pounds, sometimes more. So it was for this grueling schedule that a perfectly wonderful vacation earned its nickname: “The Death-March Across Europe.”

Gabriela and I wrote this book twenty years ago, only intending at that time to preserve the record of our wonderful wander through Europe. She always regarded it as one of the truly great experiences of her life, and always hoped to return when our retirement permitted. Now, as I lose her to Alzheimer's, I have published it to celebrate her and preserve in its pages what I can of her intellect and personality, expressed through print and image in the only literary work she ever produced. In doing so, I hope to share her---the most wonderful person I have had the honor to know---with you, my treasured readers. She intended it as a factual record. But imp that I am, I could not leave it unadorned. So I added my quirky humor where it seemed to fit, and she loved the result. So now it is a fun and funny chronicle of two lovers romping---and trudging---together through the finer sights of Europe. Some of it may seem rustic or anachronistic twenty years later; but that may help younger readers realize that things were not always as they are now, and that someday they too will look back and realize with amazement all the changes that took place during their lives. In any case, Gabriela and I truly hope you enjoy it!
