I've been trying to learn Tai Chi through the same author for the past year, and I used his video to learn the styles. I thought, hey why not learn Tai Chi sword technique? Sounds fun! And so I bought the book. By itself you're going to have a tough time, if you have no idea of the flow of the art. So I picked up the video to go with this. And the two definitely go hand in hand. I learned the technique (BASIC) and the book really helps to get the subtleties down, plus additional practices to do. The subtext is that you need 10 years to practice to be any good with this stuff. So, I'm on my way!

This book has so much information about Tai Chi Sword. It begins with the history of the tai chi sword which I found absolutely fascinating! Beginning with the fundamentals and progressing all through the book are excellent illustrations on hand and foot work along with the proper handling of the sword. The illustrations are very helpful with the fact the arrows show how to properly swing and step during the exercises and forms. An updated version of the 1999 edition, with clearer versions of the photos and better captions. A recommended book on the straight sword (or Jian) form.
