Maureen F. McHugh shows us a world where Lincoln survived the assassination attempt but the Northerners have initiated a ‘resettlement’ of recalcitrant Southerners, evoking spine-chilling images of a Holocaust in “The Lincoln Train”, and Ray Bradbury gives us a love letter to the silent comedy films of the 1920s with the heartwarming tale “Another Fine Mess”. Linda Nagata examines the trope of starcrossed lovers where a woman who has taken the immortality Cure wishes to taker her beau - an UnCured - to a far planet in “Old Mother’, while Robert Reed gives a master class in SF suspense with the enthralling “A Place With Shade”. Ula was brought up by the wealthy recluse Provo after the death of her real parents and he hires Locum to teach her terraforming techniques on his private ice worldlet. But Ula is a decidedly strange woman with hidden plans that do not so much involve learning from Provo but teaching him. Worth the price of admission alone! Marcos Donnelly closes the issue with a terrifying re-imagining of a beguiling piper who can make people do what he wants through his pipe music. “El Hijo De Hernez” examines the value of free will. Recommended issue.
