A great debut novella, that makes me want to read more from this author! What to expect: Salt in the blood is a classic horror story. Set in a country-side manor house, it follows events when a young nurse hired to deal with the elderly lady of the house. The nurse comes in on a stormy night, and proceeds over the coming days to uncover some dark family secrets. Sounds cliché? It's not. It's a brilliantly told story, with all the elements that make the horror genre work. A joy to read, a great example of craft in storytelling. What I liked: The writing style, use of language, descriptions and characterisation are all top notch. The writing is well paced, draws you in, and keeps you engaged. What to be aware of: This is a novella, not a grand epic. This creates certain limitations on scale of descriptions and backstories, that is often the hallmark of fantasy and horror works. That said, it will appeal to those who appreciate the sometime lost art of short stories. This is an ancient-horrors style novel, rather than a deep psychological breakdown. Expect vividly descriptive passages of flayed skin and demonic presences, for your gruesome after-dinner entertainment. Summary: If you're looking for a quick - and horrifying - read, pick up this new author. You will not be disappointed. --- Assaph Mehr, author of Murder In Absentia: a story of Togas, Dagger, and Magic - for lovers of Ancient Rome, Urban Fantasy, and Detective mysteries.

Accepting a job as caregiver to an aging widow, Julianna Margate never expected to be drawn into an ancient blood-feud, nor to come face-to-face with a centuries-old evil in the estate’s disused salt mine. The old widow, Lavinia Harrow, is perhaps the best character, well developed and strong-willed, constantly playing mind games with Julianna and her manservant. There are doses of excellently written prose throughout the book, and a healthy dash of well-described gore that make this a debut horror book that I would highly recommend. Make no mistake, NB Williams is about to introduce herself in the best way possible. With a knack for great story telling and a twisted mind, she's destined for a writing journey that will leave her readers breathless.

“Salt in the Blood” has a perfect blend of horror, romance, and plot twists. The title relates to an ancient, cursed salt mine. Julianna, a caretaker, is a strong heroine. Her elderly patient, Lavinia, reaches too far in an attempt to satisfy her greed. William’s writing is vivid and clever: “(Lavinia) had more steel in her than the Brooklyn Bridge.” This creative story is unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s a fast read. Well done!

Meh The main female character was irritating and stupid. Poor portrayal of a strong woman. Not too well thought out and a wasted hour
