Mahan had to tackle several problems at the same time: finish some unique quests, develop his castle, develop his shaman level (which incidentally included taking a pupil), and develop his clan. Thanks to some of his initial clan members he managed to avoid all the bureaucratic jobs delegating them to capable people instead. Everything was fine and dandy except for some very minor but very suspicious happenings that Mahan did not have time to think about being always busy. Everything was fine and dandy except for some very minor but very suspicious happenings that Mahan did not have time to think about being always busy. Who would have thought a MMORPG would keep a guy busier than normal soul-draining 9 to 5 job does? In any way, some insignificant events can lead to a global cataclysm if unattended as we all know. Starting with the previous book the amount of influential players became too big for me to memorize all their names. This fact began bothering me. I was passively following the flow of the story without bothering to think about it too hard. At this point the plot became somewhat repetitive; not to the point of being boring, but enough for me to realize its repetitiveness. I was ready to give 3 stars and then... the ending came. Dat ending!!! For people that say it was totally unexpected and out of character please reread the previous books starting with the third where this particular subplot appeared. All the signs were there if you look for them. So yes, the last chapter alone bumped the rating by one star and made me start the next book right away - this was in the middle of the night by the way: I was staying late to finish last chapters of this book. I could not stop. Still people were so upset that the author had to write a short story The Hour of Pain just to explain what exactly happened. Yes, I have read it too. It was a retelling of exactly the same events, but from a different point of view.

Stacy is a troglodyte! The first 4 books in this series were fun light reads that had me shaking my head at the MC's stupidity and the easy way things happened for him. This book isn't like that. About 1/4 through I started dreading what new way Stacy was going to betray him, and at half way through I was putting the book down and walking away from it for a day. All of the joy and fun had vanished. I will give the author credit for making me feel strongly, but I usually try to avoid feeling what Stacy is a troglodyte! The only reason I'm reading the 6th book is I want to see Plinto and the Mahan smash that (unprintable) Stacy out of the game. Plinto, and the zombie are the only ones who don't betray Mahan. Sorry if that is a spoiler, but you really need to know that someone is true to Mahan. My husband telling me that is the only reason I finished this book and started the next one.

The ending utterly ruined this series for me. It feels like a cheap way to amp up the drama of the series to keep the reader invested by basically pressing the reset button on the POV character's perspective of the game world and everyone in it. *Update* I highly recommend reading The Hour of Pain which is a short story follow up to this book. Worst ending to a series I've ever read If the goal was to alienate your entire audience, well done. You've successfully trashed the whole series in a single chapter. One of the best LitRPG series out there. This is one of the best LitRPG series out there! My ONLY complaint is that while books 6 and 7 are finished, alas they are awaiting translation into English... So not a real complaint more I hate just waiting, and wish I could read Russian so I could read them right now. Otherwise great addition to the series and I can't wait to see what the Shaman will do next. One of the best LitRPG series out there. This is one of the best LitRPG series out there! I will pick up the next installment when it comes out and I will likely even pay the money to read the 20 pages short-story that's been published about that ending but damn I've taken quite a blow in my love for this series and all I can say is that the author better make it up to me...

I must admit, I enjoyed the book all the way to the finish…and then I stopped enjoying it pretty quickly. I have no idea, why the stuff that happened happened, and it wasn’t a good plot twist for me. I felt a little cheated… Mild spoiler warning :) I'm wondering what did women ever do to this poor autor to make him view them this way… :D I must admit, I enjoyed the book all the way to the finish…and then I stopped enjoying it pretty quickly. I would say this book is better than average but only because of the ending and what occurred in the last 40 pages of the book, besides that that book was right in line if not a little below the par for the series. I just felt that Mahan kept getting distracted with all these side quests what started to pop up and very focused on his main quests and plot lines that he has to complete. He was finding these little quests to do and would occupy his time with those inside of his big ones. The one thing i did like about this book was his student and how she spice up the book by adding in a new character. I Thought that Mahan should have seen the betray of of the Phoenix alliance and stacey for a while one, i think even at one point mahan did think that Stacey was betraying him but play it off because it was something that couldn't happen, like come on man use your common sense!!! he should have seen that she was only after the chess set and taken precautions against her, but Mahan didnt and he will probably lose everything now but his castle. I am excited to see where the next book goes in the series and how the ending will effect the plot line as I am expecting a major chance. Looking forward to the next read.

Hahahahahahahaa!!! That was my initial reaction regarding the ending. Then, when I read that he wrote a short story basically "explaining" the ending, I had the same reaction times two. I could only imagine the author FRANTICALLY trying to douse this raging fire he created with a 64oz Slurpee cup, and finding out that it just couldn't get the job done. I also wondered if this was just a difference between cultures. Or maybe between a writer that’s relatively 'new’, and a one that's been doing it for a while. Not everyone can write a "Choices". On one hand, it could possibly be considered a bold choice to show that the protagonist isn't so great that everything goes his way. I mean, I knew a gut punch was coming eventually. Things were working a bit too well for the protagonist, and everything was a bit too convenient. That's either setting something big up, or a sign of bad self-insert fanfiction. On the other hand, that 180 degree turn was so jarring it made my neck snap. That was a little too perfect a set up. I guess you could point to how the protag was sent to prison for being not very thorough, but then it makes you think he’s really gullible if he hasn’t learned anything by now. The author clearly had no idea how much backlash he'd receive from his fans for it. Still, I notice a lot of works from our European/Russian/French cousins seem to have a good chance of ending things in such a way. I think I would have laughed more if this was the last book, but I guess he had to find some way to stretch it out for the other two books. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the series, or some of the concepts in the series. While the game part is okay, I really like the idea of characters leveling up, and taking unconventional steps to becoming powerful. I do feel that the audiobooks can be grating at times. For some reason, either the writing, the translation, or the voice that sounds either whiny or so full of himself he’s a sitcom character (I’m sorry, but those inflections are horrible. Does everyone really love this guy?), just makes it hard for me to listen to the books. It’s how it was given to me, but I think I might read the next books. (view spoiler)[ Like I began, I found this hilarious, and won’t rage quit like I’m sure some of the readers (say) they will. I think I’ll also skip the short story Band-Aid he put out, as it seems to be spoiler-ish. I’d like to see how he’ll pull off a turnaround from this. I would like to point out one other thing I found funny. For most of the series, Stacy was referred to as a ‘girl’, an ideal who is smart, beautiful, resourceful, and completely in love with the Protag. By the end though, I definitely noticed that he started referring to her as a ‘woman’. Ha. Still, she/they could have wiggled out of the contract clause, and didn't have to pay for his freedom. I'm sure that'll be a point of saving grace in the short or the next book. (hide spoiler)]

This is the absolute worst book in the series. It loses all of it's charm from here on. The mystery of the game is gone, the quests are somewhat repetitive. For example, the protagonist now has an apprentice and he's a total jackass to her. Constantly telling her to shut up and know her place. That she should do as she's told. Of course, in the previous books, the protagonist had no problem ignoring everyone's advice around him and breaking all the rules, but when his apprentice does it.... The guild storyline is just garbage, it basically revolves around the protagonist making an easy decision, putting someone in charge of something, then benefitting like crazy from it. That's two thirds of the book right there. The last third is him coming up with crazy ideas that should be impossible for a number of reasons, then completing them easily with flashy effects.

Still, after being able to read the short companion to this book, The Hour of Pain, it did help calm me down. I am continuing to love this series and the emotions it evokes. The NEED I have to continue to find out more with this world and the characters in it is insatiable. I am trying to be spoiler free (so stop reading this part) but it is interesting to watch Mahan go from being more focused on himself to being pushed into the head of a clan, castle, and potentially a Harbinger (upper level shaman).

Well... that was a book. I'm somewhat torn on book 5. In some ways Mahanenko did exactly what I was hoping he'd do. The story has been scaled down somewhat with less hundred and thousand man battles, he's made an effort to start tying up the loose ends, and a decent portion of it was done in an interesting new location. Most of my mixed feelings are spoiler heavy so 90% of this review are going to be behind the spoiler tag. That ending... e_e I'm honestly not sure how to feel about it. So it turns out, this entire time, nearly everyone Mahan has known was just playing him the whole time and at the end of this book the climates in one of the most epic F***ing overs I've ever seen happen to a main character. I had suspected something like this for a while. That girl who got Mahan sent to prison in the first place and has been working to help him behind the scenes and has been trying to get to him in the game just seems like the natural love interest and Stacy always seemed so fake (and annoying). Didn't expect it on this level though. I'll be honest, it did a good job of stressing me out at the time and leaving me depressed. Looking back on it though, I think I like it. The level of sociopathy shown by several of these very successful players seems unreal though and the size of the conspiracy hurts it's believability. At the same time, I'm left wondering, is it really that bad though? Sure they stole some of this money, a lot of resources, a couple of quest items, and some players, but he also kept a lot of things he couldn't have ever gotten if not for their help. His ship, his castle, his gear, high reputation in very important areas, and a lot of player contacts. More important, and THE WHOLE POINT OF THE STORY UP TILL NOW, he received enough money to pay off his debt and get released from prison. All the rest was just stuff to do while serving out his time. So, Pros: - Future books should be much more scaled down now that he's mostly solo again - Might get some more real world time with him. I want to explore more of that. - Stacy is gone and girl who got him arrested in the first place may be more of a main character. - Surviving his sentence story line will probably turn into a revenge story line which could be interesting (Don't think I haven't already spotted part of it, he's only created part of the chess set after all. The other pieces will probably point to a different entrance.) (hide spoiler)] Over all, I think this was one of the better books in the series and has done a great job of setting up the next ones.

Surely not having your clan head being sent back to prison for minor infractions would be advantageous enough to do it, even if other players had to work for it. Ofc with the ending in mind this would probably not happen but still the fact that it never even occurs to the MC, only reinforces the fact that the mc is either an idiot or genius whenever the plot calls for it.

I was about halfway through the book and I was thinking this is just too easy, everything just seems to go Mahan's way. The writing and translation hasn't been all that good this whole series, but it has mostly been tolerable because the story managed to keep you entertained. The characters are not consistent at all, and the plot has been pretty thin. But as I said, most of that could be ignored, because the books are quite fun, and I enjoy the LitRPG genre. But as time goes all the problems mentioned earlier just seems to become worse and worse from book to book. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Very major spoiler ahead. This book is mostly filler book in which our intermediate leveled shaman, who can't use any class skills at all for months, does even less than in the former books since he can't do anything at all outside of a underleveled dragon transformation. It culminates not in a strange battle against a dolphin-squid-submarine-monster, but in the utter betrayal of all his friends and guildmates, who were phoenix double agents so they could prostitute themselves to mahan for the k Very major spoiler ahead. Very disappointing. This is one of the ending I would drop a series or an author alltogether, but since I already have the next book I guess I will suffer through the remainder of the series.

If you are reading a Mary Sue story and start to really recognize it as such, it would require great effort to bring the protagonist to a higher (better?) level. And the first part of this book in the series truly is a Mary Sue story about Mahan (of course the previeous four books in the series were as well) I considered to put it aside. Mahan is getting basically everything and there was no corrective action in the story what so ever. And then the ending happened. Wow! This makes me not only give this 4 stars, but also pick up #6 in the series.

This was just a slow story, and it took me a while to get through it as I’d get bored by the story, read lots of other books, would read a bit more before another book caught my interest. Almost 4 full months is a bit long for me. It’s usually less than 4 days. What really left me with a sour taste in my mouth, and makes me unsure of whether I want to read the rest of the series, is the twist at the end. It ruins the story so far for me, and I don’t know that the author can recover it in the las This was just a slow story, and it took me a while to get through it as I’d get bored by the story, read lots of other books, would read a bit more before another book caught my interest.
