The Official Truth is in here! SMOKIN' GOOD! Obviously, due the recurrent theme of government conspirancies, the appealing of those so many "unofficial" guides to The X-Files (that I have several of them too!) is quite catching, but it's refreshing good to find that there is a truly "official" guide for the iconic TV show. Definitely a valuable addition to any X-Files library of reference books.

You'd laugh if you knew how important this book was to me back in 1996. Because 1996, for me, was the time before the internet (I'm slow, so what), and before DVDs, and before I knew about fandom, and online episode guides and all the shiny stuff that is out there these days. 1996 was the time when I watched the X-Files with a friend every week, excited and scared and just crazy about it, and really, when I saw the well-known logo on a table in a local bookstore, only an immediate alien abduction You'd laugh if you knew how important this book was to me back in 1996. It was one of my most treasured fannish possessions for a long, long time. *is nostalgic*

"That which makes miracles, can also make great evil." This book covers the first two seasons and the first two episodes of season three. It has a very brief bio for some of the main characters and some chapters on 'Behind the Scenes'. I was mainly interested in the episode guides, mainly the mythology episodes, but the 'Behind the Story' parts for each episode are quite interesting. It didn't really shine any new light on the series, but I feel the first two seasons they were still figuring "That which makes miracles, can also make great evil." You could get all this info online, but it's always better to pick up a book...3 🌟

Read this encyclopedia of the first season of Fox TV's hit sci-fi classic, X-FILES, alongside the shows themselves, and you'll find that author Brian Lowry--or perhaps the editors--could have taken more time to catalog the very circuitous and complex stories of the show's first season. Too often, the summaries provided for each episode are either too abbreviated or poorly worded to replace watching the show itself. Would-be fans looking to "speed read" their way through the entire first season of the show in order to catch up won't find some of the plotlines easy to comprehend, based on this particular edition. With that written, this particular volume provides a comprehensive look into the pre-production process of the series, complete with fears that the show would never see the light of day because of the pains that creator Chris Carter endured to ensure that his envision was realized. In the margins of the book, there are also included very interesting X-factoids pertaining to each episode. Some of them relate to the production itself and other explicitly address the mythologies that inspired the episode. Despite some lapses in writing style--chock full of dangling and misplaced modifiers--this volume is probably the best companion available to watching the show's first season. Hold it close, though, and do not rely on this volume alone to supplant the viewing of the program itself. Strange, isn't it? You've just been told to watch the "film version" rather than read about it. You heard it here first, and that's the truth.

More of a reference/ textbook sort of thing, which covers the first three seasons. I was hoping for more juicy insider information. It does have some, and the project's genesis was really interesting, but after that, it was more of a summary of episodes. I suppose this would have been handier during the time of publishing, when the internet wasn't so quick and comprehensive. Another niggling thing was that it also seemed a bit Duchovny-centric at times; I wish there was more interest or humor in More of a reference/ textbook sort of thing, which covers the first three seasons. Some interesting behind-the-scenes info, but given that this was published right in the middle of the show, it only has details for the first two seasons. It was pretty funny to hear the author discuss the online fandom for the show, wondering about how this whole world wide web thing was going to work out (the book was published in 1995.) Worth it for fans, but there aren't many juicy secrets here. This is a nicely researched and written guide to the first two seasons of "The X-Files", written when the show was hot and trendy. Lowry has talked with many of the people involved in making the show, getting their insights. Lots of behind-the-scenes stories and explanations of some of the series more obscure titles. This is the first of six volumes in The Official Guide to The X-Files, covering seasons 1 and 2. The book contains a recap of each episode, followed by background information on the episode, which is often where it gets very interesting. It also has sections on making the show, character profiles, and things such as reviews and ratings. The book is written in a way that is very readable, whether you just read it straight through or browse through the episode entries. While this was crucial for fans back then, especially when trying to understand the unfolding mythology, today it might seem incomplete and useless, because it was written so early on and there are now easier ways to find this information. However, if you are watching the show for the first time, you don't have to worry about ate season spoilers with this book. It could also help when bingewatching, because it's easier to miss or forget details in a show like this.

There are also profiles for most of the main characters as well as career bios for the cast. Additionally, full episodes guides are included for seasons 1 and 2; with each episode accompanied with background information and trivia questions. However, Lowry’s Back Story section is rather scant and mundane. Also, there’s a lot of fluff, like episode ratings, award nominations, and selected magazine and newspaper reviews. While it’s entertaining and provides a lot of interesting information, The Truth Is Out There: The Official Guide to the X-Files is uneven and is kind of all over the place (much like the show itself).

Yes, the truth is out there, but not so much in here. This book, published during the hype that was, and for the most part, still is a phenomenon today was obviously made to reach in to viewer’s pockets and make some of their cash disappear. It covers seasons 1 and 2 episodes completely but only the first 2 episodes of season 3. Oh, and exciting news. Kolchak the Night Stalker has been released on DVD - yes, go snap up your copy . . . Ummm, but back to the book. I would say it is not worth the cover price, but if you can get one for a lot less (like I did for 2 dollars) it’s a good quick read into the behind the scenes production of the show (when it was happening) and a good explanation of the major players (Cancer Man, etc) and themes (alien abductions, etc) Bottom line - it may be ‘the official’ but it’s not really too good. You are way farther ahead just saving up for the DVD sets and getting them instead.

My brother bought this years ago but left to collect mounds of dust so I'm keeping it for myself..haha. During those times..aliens were BIG and people all become obsessed with anything extra terrestrial. Wah..wishing trends like that came back rather than watching all these stupid reality shows..(sigh).
