Coloring books for adults seem to be the new "thing" in the past couple of years. I don't know whether coloring in the designs helps to unlock creativity squelched by the passing years, or just appeals to us because "coloring within the lines" is a whole lot easier at 66 than it was at 6. Most of the adult coloring books seem to be drawn as ornate designs, sort of like a Tiffany Lamp. However, with "Invisible Cat Activities: A Complete the Drawing Book", by Cate Anevski, the conceit is a bit different than than just coloring in the design in pretty colors. Anevski's book is 80 pages of drawings of a cat in different poses. Most are active - running and jumping - but in some, the pictured cat is more sedentary. She labels each page with a simple instruction, for instance, a cat on it's hind legs, holding something in it's front paw and smiling softly, is labeled "Draw the invisible flower". Similar is a cat - also up on it's hind legs, with front paws held high - labeled "Draw the invisible patty cake partner". I bought "Invisible Cat Activities" for myself. Anevski uses different cats in the book, but many are of a tabby. I'll admit I have a great weakness for tabs, but all her cat drawings are appealing. Are they "appealing" enough for me to actually try drawing a guitar, or a flower, or a trampoline? No, any sort of creativity I once had got up and went decades ago. But Cate Anevski's cat drawings are so wonderful that I value the book in its current, unadorned form. You see, I can "imagine" the cats doing the activities, but "imagining" doesn't translate to drawing. That's okay, though, the pleasure in this book is in the imagination.

There are seventy sight cat drawings, one per page to color, draw, pencil, and decorate however, you want. Each picture has a caption that will help you to interpret what is missing. You can either add the missing article or draw whatever strikes you fancy. There is no need to stay within the lines. This book is an imaginative twist on connect the dots. In this case, the caption provides the dots. Your imagination provides the rest. I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and gave it to my husband for Christmas. He loved it as he loves drawing -- he's not into coloring, but he loves books like this. Everyone in the family wanted to look through it on Christmas, so it was enjoyed by all. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and gave it to my husband for Christmas.
