The writing was superb, but there were some minor editing mistakes. Awakening Magic was a wonderful read and left me looking forward to getting to know the Connelly's even better in the next book.

Awakening Magic held my interest from beginning to end. This book is full of witchcraft, fairies, werewolves, smokin’ hot romance and Native American mythology. This book really has something for everyone no matter what you’re into and assuming that you like those sort of things you’ll love this book. I absolutely loved the setting and the shape shifting character was awesome. I also found myself flipping the book over to check out the cover art again and again. This is not my usual genre so I was a skeptic, but I met Ms Powell and because I read a lot - I wanted to give this a try. I was hooked on the 1st page, immediately had to read the 2nd in the series and am waiting for the 3rd book to come out. That’s a darn good read for me!

Awakening Magic by Neely Powell is a paranormal story, with a touch of romance, about a family of witches that have carved out a safe haven for themselves and others like them in north Georgia. When an old enemy returns to their normally quite community they must use their strength as a family unit to protect and save the ones they love. When an old enemy returns to their normally quite community they must use their strength as a family unit to protect and save the ones they love. Brenna Burns, one of the Connelly coven witches, has recently returned to New Mourne after spending several years in Atlanta. She is not the only entity that has returned to the small town. You see, every generation a Woman in White demands a sacrifice of one of the coven’s own as a tribute. As a precursor to the sacrifice of one of the Connelly witches an evil settles over the town causing death and destruction. Things appear to be different this time when Garth, the local sheriff, is killed by the Woman in White. She has always only demanded a Connelly witch. Unfortunately, none of the Connelly witches know for sure because pieces of their family book of magic and history are missing. Jake, a deputy and shape shifter, takes over the duties of Sheriff and joins the Connelly women to find a way to end the deaths. He discovers the Connelly women are not as united a front as everyone believes. It will be left to Brenna to find the missing pieces of the book and bring the family unit together to defeat this evil once and for all. This is an excellent story about strong women and family bonds that just happens to include various paranormal elements. The plot has multiple twists that are unexpected and a lot of diverse characters. It made for a quick read. I also liked the romance between Jake and Brenna, though mostly in the background, it fitted in nicely with the story line. I can easily say this book would make a great beach read. I recommend Awakening Magic to people who like paranormal stories and stories with an emphasis on family relationships. I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review. I’ve read my fair share of supernatural stories and I appreciated the way this one was written. The characters were easy to like and relate to on some level. I found I understood Brenna’s anger and resentment towards her absent parents. I thought the fact that when trouble arose the majority of the Connelly clan came together to try to come up with a solution. With regards to the different family members and their individual powers, I found that to be an unusual twist to a story where the main characters are witches, with the exception of Jake. I found Brenna to be a strong, likeable character who would rather suffer personally than see any more of her family members, or even members of New Mourne, hurt or killed. I liked how Neely Powel incorporated not only Jake, a tiger shifter, into the story but also the owl and Tasmin the cat. The story showed the importance of family and coming together when faced with hard times. In the case of the Connelly family, they had to face the presence of a demon and the Woman in White who wanted to destroy the Connelly clan. Overall this was a great story filled with a variety of twists, action, romance and I even found humor within the book. If you are someone who enjoys stories about witches, shifters or paranormal books in general you may find this as enjoyable as I did. I can definitely see myself reading it again and hope to read more about the Connelly Clan in the future.

When an evil takes over the town, Brenna must unite with Sheriff Jake Tyler and face the evil. The narrative starts strongly, with the fierce, memorable Brenna instantly thrust into a series of intense situations and forced to reconsider her priorities. Powell has a knack for setting and character, and the increasingly disturbing chaos are combined with characters’ engaging interpersonal interactions. The main arc of the story—the evil slowly taking over the town—plays out among more personal stories of abandonment, grief, love, family, long-buried secrets, old promises, and vengeance. With nonstop action and a plot that is varied and enticing, the novel makes for a page-turner. Readers looking for strong female characters who seize control of their own destiny will devour this one in a jiffy. This is a winner.

In crisp, immersive prose, Powell explores her characters’ inner turmoil, struggles, and past trauma and spins a graceful web of intrigue, tying up just enough loose ends to bring this first installment to a satisfying ending, while leaving enough conflicts unresolved to make readers excited for the next volume. This is a knockout.

Witches, demons, shifters, spirits, fae, preachers & scholars...All come together in this one. I read the synopsis and wasn’t sure at first but this is more of a family of witches in turmoil coming together to protect one another and their hometown with a hint of romance thrown in. Give it a try and you will be pleasantly surprised. Enjoyed the read more on Audible than in my kindle as there are some typos in the digital copy that distracted me.
