A good Larry Niven short story and a couple of other 5 star entries push the whole issue up to 5 stars. Larry Niven - What Good Is A Glass Dagger? - 5 stars - I guess that I just like Larry Niven's stories. This one occurs in his world of Earth 14,000 years or so before today where magic still exists but it has been identified as a natural resource which is being used up. A couple of wizards, a werewolf from Atlantis and a glass dagger make for a good story. A couple of wizards, a werewolf from Atlantis and a glass dagger make for a good story. Gene Kearny - A Sweet Little Pool of Low Cost Labor - 4 stars - A well crafted story of a researcher(?) checking out an isolated tribe in the Amazon looking for a cheap labor pool. The tribe has adopted an interesting ritual based on one tribe member's experience in the outside world. Barry N. Malzberg - A Short Religious Novel - 3 stars - One man's story of looking for answers and advice from an alien supercomputer. Fun. James E. Gunn - The Voices - 4 stars - A project to search for radio signals from other planets has survived for 50 years. Now, it might have found something. A well told story. John Sladek - Broot Force - 3 stars - A take off on Asimov's robot stories. J. W. Schutz - The Wish - 5 stars - A very good variation on the idea of being granted three wishes. Isaac Asimov - Science: The World, Ceres - 3 stars - Everything you ever wanted to know about the asteroid Ceres, except for what we've learned in the past 10 years. Phyllis MacLennan - Thus Love Betrays Us - 5 stars - A man is left alone on an alien planet to do preliminary research, but has to stay there far longer than intended, finds intelligent life where he doesn't expect to, and loses his own mind. Well done.
