A collection of good stories, but nothing spectacular. Harlan Ellison - Basilisk - 4 stars - A standard Harlan Ellison story - dark, unusual concepts, not a happy ending, but very good. John Sladek - Engineer to the Gods - 4 stars - A parody of a Robert Heinlein story: An engineer who could build a spaceship out of a paper clip and a magnet, beautiful women who cluster around him and can't get enough of him, one intelligent woman who defers to the man, of course. All in all, though, a good story. J A collection of good stories, but nothing spectacular. All in all, though, a good story. Jack Vance - The Brave Free Men (2nd of 2 parts) - 3 stars - On a planet to which people from Earth emigrated long ago, an attack on humans is finally determined to be caused by aliens. An OK story, but the writing style ... zzzzzzzz. Jerry Sohl - Jelna - 4 stars - A man marries an alien (extra-terrestrial) woman who appears totally human. Over time he and his friends find out that there is something about her that causes problems with humans. A good story. Ron Goulart - Gigolo - 4 stars - Android technology becomes advanced enough that men start buying their wives male androids to have as 'friends' while the husbands are traveling. In this case, the husband didn't quite end up with what he thought. Cute. Charles E. Fritch - If At First You Don't Succeed - 4 stars - F&SF doesn't want to buy any more "deal with the devil" stories, but one author keeps on trying anyway. It turns out that he has to. Isaac Asimov - Science: Doctor, Doctor, Cut My Throat - 4 stars - Asimov recounts his experience with thyroid surgery and, of course, tells you everything that you might ever want to know about the thyroid gland. William Lee - To Gild A Unicorn - 3 stars - An alien race is called unicorns because of the single horn growing out of their heads. Humans have a low-key war with a different alien race on the planet of the unicorns.
