Wow, this is a dumpster fire of a book. If you happen to be doing acquisitions and are looking up reviews this one would be a hard no. Many sentences are 2-4 words. Those that are not seem to be lifted from other unicorn books. I recognized lines from Harry Potter and the Last Unicorn. The book is broken into several chapters but there is no logical progression or thought behind what is included where.

Written Horribly. Short Sentences. No flow. Should have been written in point form, yet wasn't. Not suitable for a baby, kid, or any age range. Awkward. Written Horribly. Short Sentences. I actually skimmed through this with my kids because the writing was so embarrassingly bad and the content so strange and haphazard. I honestly cannot fathom how this was published, but I suspect it had to do with capitalizing on the current unicorn trend. I can imagine the publishers' conversation: Cherry Lake Publisher 1: "Gee, the kids go crazy for unicorns these days! There's gotta be money on the table for us. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Cherry Lake Publisher 2: "Publish three differ I actually skimmed through this with my kids because the writing was so embarrassingly bad and the content so strange and haphazard. Cherry Lake Publisher 2: "Publish three different editions of The Last Unicorn? Annotated, Illustrated and a babylit version?" Cherry Lake Publisher 1: "Nah, that's way too much work and we would have to pay through the nose for the rights. I know a gal, Virginia Loh-Hagan, she can write a book in half a day and we can get it to press next week!" Cherry Lake Publisher 2 is appalled: "But the typical editing process takes a minimum of 4 weeks! You're not suggesting we skip that entirely, are you?" Cherry Lake Publisher 1: "What's the point? With the demand for unicorns, libraries will buy these books sight unseen. Why waste the money on editing? We'll grab the images from Shutterstock* and we'll be raking in the dough." Cherry Lake Publisher 2 throws hands up in disgust and starts looking for a new job. Here is an actual excerpt, which is very representative of the book: "Unicorns live alone. Or they live in small groups. They don't go to open spaces. They live in magical forests. The forest protects them. They live near clear lakes. They need to see themselves. They're vain. They're the most beautiful creatures in the world. And they know it. Some unicorns want to be shinier. They kill sun dogs. These creatures have shiny coats. These unicorns aren't pure. They lose their powers." Cherry Lake Publishing is now branded in my mind as the Geocities web pages of publishing. *I originally referenced stock photos in jest, but in fact Shutterstock and iStock are the primary contributors for the image credits.
