"The Light Between Oceans" is a heart wrenching story of lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne and his wife Isabel who, after rescuing a baby in a shipwrecked boat, decide to raise the child as their own and face the consequences. Tom has signed up as a lighthouse keeper with the Australian harbormaster after his stint with the military. He shows his chivalry when he rescues a rich young lady from a drunk soldier onboard a passenger boat. At Partaguese, Tom meets a beautiful young woman named Isabel Graysmark falls in love with her. A year later he marries Isabel and takes her to live with him in the lighthouse. Tom and Isabel enjoy their isolated life together on the island, but misfortune follows them when Isabel miscarries three consecutive pregnancies pushing her to deep depression. One afternoon, Tom discovers a dinghy washed up on the beach with a dead man and a hapless infant. Tom and Isabel take in the infant and take care of her as if she had given birth to the baby. Tom wants to report the incident but Isabel convinces him that it’s a God sent gift after all her losses. Against his wishes, Tom agrees to her plan and buries the man on the island and accepts the child as their own naming her Lucy. During their trip to the mainland, Isabel’s parents are thrilled to see their grand-daughter. Tom discovers that a local woman, Hannah Roennfeldt, was still grieving for the loss of her husband, Frank and two-month old daughter, Grace at sea. Frank was forced to flee the town during an attack two years ago. Tom is convinced that it was Frank and Grace that had landed on his island. He wants to tell Hannah the truth but Isabel is outraged by the idea saying that too much time had passed to simply apologize.
