Four novels by one of the great masters of science fiction. Some of the science is a little dated but the stories stand up very well. "The Trigger" and "Richter 10" both are stories about subjects very much in the current news and I highly recommend them to anyone. Four novels by one of the great masters of science fiction. Great Collection I always enjoy reading works by Clarke. They explore not just outer space, but inner space as well. His choice of subjects is always very thoughtful and mind-expanding. I appreciate how he examines our nature and environment with a positive outlook.

The opportunity to receive four books for the price of one was hard to pass up. When you also consider that the stories were written by Arthur C. Clarke, it became a no-brainer for me...I HAD to purchase this book. Clarke -- of "2001: A Space Odyssey" fame (as well as subsequent books in this series) -- was considered one of the top science fiction writers in the latter half of the 20th century, breathing the rarefied air of success with the likes of Asimov and Heinlein. Clarke -- of "2001: A Space Odyssey" fame (as well as subsequent books in this series) -- was considered one of the top science fiction writers in the latter half of the 20th century, breathing the rarefied air of success with the likes of Asimov and Heinlein. If you enjoy reading "hardcore" sci-fi, you will find these stories to be highly enjoyable. In addition, Clarke does not focus on one aspect (i.e., space) and make that the center of all his tales. He delves into different areas of science, entertaining and enlightening the reader with his visions of future events. To demonstrate the diversity, here is a quick blurb on each of the stories: The Deep Range -- This story deals with humans farming the seas for food, and what happens when they find things they didn't expect to see. The Trigger -- Clarke explores the impact of science and technology on civilization, and how a discovery might seem to be the best for future humanity might actually be horribly detrimental to society. The Ghost from the Grand Banks -- Written in 1990, the story revolves around recovering the Titanic from the ocean floor. Richter 10 -- The title is taken from the Richter Scale, which gauges the strength of earthquakes. The story revolves around one man's efforts to predict as well as eliminate earthquakes. As you see, each story deals with a different area of science. Clarke brings not only his scientific expertise to each tale, he creates believable characters who are affected by the described events. It is impossible for a reader not to be pulled into these separate worlds and experience the efforts and struggles of the people involved. This is classic sci-fi, presented in an entertaining manner, wonderfully crafted and impeccably edited (something we don't always see in many of today's books). Five stars.
