Callidus O’Callahan is a toymaker of extraordinary skills who has charmed the village in which he lives for a lifetime. One of the village Christmas traditions created by O’Callahan was the “Blue Angel”, a spectacular work of art, that adorns the top of the pine tree in the town’s center square. Decorating the tree is an annual community Christmas event to which every family contributes; their form of healing in the dark years after the civil war. Decorating the tree is an annual community Christmas event to which every family contributes; their form of healing in the dark years after the civil war. Belinda Jane, a beautiful woman of unknown origins, appears from nowhere when Callidus was young man. Overwhelmed by her beauty, Callidus marries her and fashions the Blue Angel after her. What follows is an extraordinary lifetime of love and family, happiness and grief leading to an extraordinary blessing and opportunity for Callidus and Belinda Jane’s granddaughter. For Her Courage is storytelling at its best and in the best tradition of Christmas stories. It is a story of believable characters and events, but with a surreal and other worldly quality that casts a faint supernatural aura over the events and characters. The author is obviously a talented writer and storyteller and should be proud of an excellent first (published) book that should appeal to everyone who loves Christmas stories, romantic tales with a twist of divine intervention, or just about any other form of traditional literature.

I can easily see this little tale of the Blue Angel being made into a short animated Christmas film appropriate for even the youngest of children. I have two very young kids, and this story is certainly appropriate for them. The story is tender and easy to digest. The setting is bizarre, and the lingering hostilities from the Civil war were oddly referenced and quickly brushed over. I understand it was not relevant to the ultimate story, but this style of writing made the book seem even more dir I can easily see this little tale of the Blue Angel being made into a short animated Christmas film appropriate for even the youngest of children. I understand it was not relevant to the ultimate story, but this style of writing made the book seem even more directed toward children. My favorite thing about this book was its lesson of sacrifice. I have two main complaints. One, editing is needed. The run-on sentences are distracting and contain too many good thoughts to be so jumbled. Run-on sentences are not the only grammatical errors, but there's no need to get into specifics. My second complaint is best expressed as a question. Why make such a great deal of reference to the beauty of the doll, its muse and its restorer when it's part of the intention of the author to convey the importance of women to be seen for more than their beauty? I would have liked for the book, though already quite brief, to end a bit sooner in the story. Having said that, I do understand Redlin's decision to wrap everything up nice and pretty.

In 'For Her Courage', Andrea Redlin has imagined a charming, olde worlde small town setting that draws the reader in with authentic and very likeable characters. Her writing is beautifully emotive, and her ability to weave a thoroughly engaging plot is enhanced by her top notch technical skills. Her deft use of restrained language left me feeling as if I'd just read a particularly emotional fairy tale or fable. Altogether a most refreshing and worthwhile read. Highly recommended for readers of a In 'For Her Courage', Andrea Redlin has imagined a charming, olde worlde small town setting that draws the reader in with authentic and very likeable characters.
