**Review copy provided in exchange for an honest review** I hardly ever read graphic novels, but wanted to give this one a try when it was offered to me. I absolutely loved the art in this novel. I absolutely loved the art in this novel. I was interested to see which direction the author would take the story. What I liked the most were the characters: Satori, Star and Lilith. All three were very complicated characters. I especially enjoyed Lilith's dark and twisted actions. She is a very evil demon and that is shown really well in this novel. She is also a very sensual and sexual creature and uses that greatly to her advantage. It wasn't difficult for her to ensnare Star into her world. What I didn't like as much was that it felt like I was dropped in the middle of the story, there wasn't a lot of back story and everything also felt a bit rushed. I needed more character development, especially for the relationship of Star and Satori. Also not having read that many graphic novels before, it was sometimes hard for me to figure out the right order of the dialogue. Overall it was an okay read for me, but I am curious to see what will happen next.

I received an advance copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. So, by now you guys know my love of two things: horror and comic books. So, by now you guys know my love of two things: horror and comic books. I have read a few of my favorite horror novels that have become comic books (The Dark Tower series; Dracula), and I am always entranced with the art that accompanies the story I had already visualized in my mind many times. Starblood, by Carmilla Voiez, is one Hell of a visual series! Her lyrical writing does not suffer in this comic as many novels-to-comics do. I have seen great works become vapid and empty in the transition. This comic does the exact opposite: it exacerbates the dark beauty of the words. Ms. Dmitriveia's art is lovely, some of the best I've seen in a long time. It enhances the words and brings to morbid life the scenes of sex, death and darkness that words can't capture. Each character is detailed beautifully, and look exactly how I pictured them. The art captures the sensuality of the story, and (in contrast) the brutality. If it were possible for their to be a perfect marriage of talents, this book is it. I will warn readers who haven't read the books, the story is graphic: both violently and sexually. But, instead of seeming to be done for shock value, it fits. I always found it difficult to not have dark magic and demons be related to sexual desires, but violence can often be overdone. While brutal, it's fitting. Not for the faint of heart, but if you like your horror bloody and hot, you can't go wrong with Starblood! I seriously can't wait for this to be released, because this is the type of thing you read where you immediately call up your best friend and say, "You've GOT to get this yesterday!" Since I consider my readers friends, let me tell you: you've GOT to get this! It's nice to see horror alive and well in the age of high school-attending vampires and teen werewolves!

I have read many graphic novels, Starblood is the first I have reviewed… so here goes. Starblood is the story of three principle characters – Star, Sartori and Lilith. Satori is a chaos magician, who in an effort to win back Star, summons Lilith. I’m not going to cover anything more in the story; you need to discover it. I think Starblood works because the characters are both realistic and flawed. This comes out through both the text and the artwork. If you take Satori – he is very much a hapless hero. I feel Satori never meant any real harm in summoning a demon. He was acting for selfish reasons, but I think he got more than he bargained for in Lilith. He is also genuine in his intent to make things right and this grows in a need to save Star. Now Star. Star is a lost soul, she does not seem to know who she really is or what she really wants. Star makes some big mistakes which kind of drive her forward. Star is likable, she is not a character without hope although at times she appears to be hopeless. Like Satori you want her to come through this. Lilith is uber-cool. She does not suffer fools gladly (especially foolish blokes, take note fellas!). Although she’s the antagonist in the story, I would not describe her as evil; she is angry and sometimes seems a little bored. In fairness I think the ideas of “good” and “evil” are not applicable to the Starblood. One final point on story. Most graphic novels tend to rely on art and speech bubbles, with minimal supporting text. There are several points in Starblood where we traditional prose comes in. It works really well and adds real depth to the story. I suspect this is due to the original story being a novel. I would love to see more of that in graphic novels. Let’s talk about art. I love the artwork in this book. It does that wonderful trick of balancing simplicity with complexity. All the characters have real personality, you can read their emotions and understand them. All of the imagery is cool – you’ll find you favourites. I really loved the image of Star and Lilith silhouetted against a backdrop of fireworks. Okay, you need to know Starblood has a lot of adult themes. In Starblood just about everyone gets naked with just about everyone else and there are a few violent scenes. I can’t see any of these scenes phasing anyone; there is nothing too explicit ;everything is intrinsic to story and character development. I started Starblood late one evening, before I knew it I was half way through and the witching hour was long past. I finished over two nights. The story grips from the outset, develops well and has great pace. The artwork and the text compliment each other very well so I’m going to give this 5 stars. Now Psychonaut awaits!

(Rating: 3.5, rounded up to 4) This is the first piece of work I have read by Carmilla Voiez, and it won't be the last as I have more of the author's books in my TBR mountain! Beautiful Gothic artwork, emotive, sexy and dark. The characterisations of Satori and Lilith are full and strong, however Star is not quite as vivid as I would've thought she would be. The story is well done and wonderfully unpredictable. I am at a disadvantage as I have not read the original novel (yet!), so I am not sure how the characters (or the story) were supposed to come across in the first instance. Overall, an exciting graphic novel well worth a look if you like all things Occult and Goth.

I'll start by admitting that I don't usually read graphic novels, but I'm glad I took a chance on Starblood. The storyline was great, the images fantastic, and I look forward to reading more from the author. A great blend of horror, erotica, and the supernatural. I read the original novel, and I was very curious to get into the graphic novel. Like its source, it doesn't pull any punches. I enjoyed the tale a second time around, and I enjoyed seeing the artwork. For those more into such media, I would very much recommend it. The story is a rich delve into a seductively dangerous, gothic world of social bickering, jealousy, and magick. It feels to me like a modern myth, the seeds of contemporary folklore germinating from obvious historical influences. I tried to savour this story, however once I started I couldn't put it down! The beautiful illustrations helped to paint a vivid imagery of a story full of magic, horror, violence, sex and love. Carmilla's debut novel is wonderfully engaging and has an intriguing plot line, that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next.
