Disappointing Vegan Mexican Cookbook I have read and reviewed other cookbooks by this author and thought they were pretty decent. However, I cannot say the same for this cookbook. It's too bad, as I'm a vegetarian who aspires to be vegan, and I absolutely adore Mexican food, having grown up in California and eaten much authentic Mexican cuisine. Where to start with the issues in this book? How about the title? While the book has one tostada recipe, it has no tamale recipe. Also, the subtitle makes you think the recipes fulfill the requirements of a raw vegan diet. Very few recipes, aside from some salsas, are uncooked. There's no emphasis whatsoever on raw food or even a chapter about it. Interesting that the author uses the “supplements” in the subtitle. If you think that cooked foods can “supplement” a raw food diet… only then is the author right. Now let's talk about the double introduction. This was written in the most peculiar manner. The author seems to assume that a vegan diet is boring, tasteless, and lacks variety… among other negative judgments. That is so not true! Vegan food can be fantastic and exciting. It just depends on how much effort you want to put into cooking or seeking out good vegan restaurants (or restaurants with good vegan choices). The author hammers home these negative points about a vegan diet in several places. The only positive talk had to do with talking about this book! Aside from this negative talk, the writing style is actually exceedingly awkward, almost as if a non-English speaker wrote it and did not have it copyedited, proofread, or even vetted by a native English speaker. Here are some strange sentences: “Mexican cuisine is extremely luscious and eccentric. It's a fusion of recipes from many different nations, especially those that have a predominantly Spanish-speaking population. The Mexican cuisine is famous for its unique and tasteful style.” Sigh... He talked several times about recipes “mentioned” in the book. At first I thought that meant that he would be mentioning other recipes throughout the book that weren't actually included in it. Later, it was clear that when he used the word “mentioned,” he actually meant recipes that were in the book. Just bizarre. The recipes were problematic on several levels. The author did not give the ingredients in the order in which they are used in the directions. Some ingredients mentioned in the directions were not on the ingredient list. The directions themselves seem to leave out key points. An accomplished cook would be able to read between the lines, but these recipes could be difficult or frustrating for a more beginning cook. Many recipes have very long ingredient lists, some including lots of spices or other ingredients you may not have in your pantry or could be hard to source locally. I always think that long ingredient lists are a deterrent for most cooks when they're looking through cookbooks for recipes to make.... unless the combination of flavors or ideas makes it worth the effort. All in all, I found myself utterly disappointed in a book I really had hoped to get a lot from. I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I am a HUGE fan of Mexican food and could NOT resist picking up this book and trying out some of the recipes, though me and my family are not vegan nor have ever considered practicing a vegan lifestyle. And since I have been enjoying the different recipe collections by Sam Kuma, I thought maybe this might be a good place to start. As I have said before in my other reviews of his books, my family is not vegan and doesn't have plans to convert. And since I have been enjoying the different recipe collections by Sam Kuma, I thought maybe this might be a good place to start. As I have said before in my other reviews of his books, my family is not vegan and doesn't have plans to convert. But we HAVe found some of the recipes to be delicious and are experimenting more and more. So I had no problem with picking up this book to try out. I actually HAVE had the chance to try a few of the recipes in this collection and can say they are actually quite easy to make and taste great. My kids had no clue it was a vegan recipe when I put it before them. They did notice it was not like the full fatty, unhealthier stuff they tend to prefer, but they assumed it was probably one of the low carb meals I have been making for the past few months. I laughed at their reactions when I told them it was all vegan. As with his other collections, I do wish he would include more visual appeal so I want to try them out more. If I could see what they looked like, I might be more motivated to try cooking them. Plus, I really need a visual guide to know what it is supposed to look like in the end. I also wish he would include a breakdown of the different values of everything. My husband is a chronic carb counter and always wants to know what I used, how much, and then calculates how many carbs per serving, minus the dietary fibers, etc. I want to know what the protein count is, the cholesterol, and all the nutritional value overall. I think if he added these things in, the books would be so much better. His writing is good, though. The recipes spell everything out clearly and I have no confusion when trying things from the other collections. Now to be brave and try this one.
