Bumbling thief, Virgil, is drawn to the Plotz mansion after reading an article about their extensive and valuable art collection in the half of the house the family lives in. Haunted Hijinks is about a family business-a haunted mansion. This haunted house is open basically year round because although Halloween only comes once a year, people like to be scared all year. It is a family business where the teenage genius twins Victor and Ivy are constantly trying to improve on their father's ideas. Having grown up in the mansion, they know every trick there is and can run it as well as the adults. Good thing, because at the end of the season there is a terrible storm that damages their sign and leaves the outside in a mess. When their parents go to get the new sign, Ivy and Vic are left alone and an even worse storm blows in. It is so bad that their Aunt Vi is unable to get to the house to be with the twins. But with their abilities they are fine alone. Only they aren't alone! A bungling burglar sneaks into the house to steal some valuable paintings. Some time passes before his presence is noticed. The teens go into high gear with their antics as they try to capture the burglar, Virgil. A second burglar is discovered on the scene as the storm rages and the house stops responding to preprogrammed directions. Things in the house do as they want and interfere with the capture of Virgil and the second burglar. The father who built the house had an engineering degree and desire to scare. Scare he did! Virgil was reduced to quivering in the halls. I wasn't scared reading about it, but if I had been in the house, I am sure I would have been screaming many times. Vic and Ivy kept me guessing, and the conclusion of the book was better than I originally thought it would be. I am not sure of the age this book was aimed at, but teenagers through adults will enjoy the fertile imagination of the authors, and will wish they could visit in person! I know I would go in a heartbeat, and I am not even a haunted house fan! Fast paced fun!!

This was a very fun story about 2 teens that work and live in a haunted house attraction. They are left along for the night when a burglar breaks in to steal from them. Then lightning from a major thunderstorm knocks out the electrical circuits and the attractions start acting in unpredictable ways on their own. At first, I thought it would be another "home along" knock-off, but I was wrong. This was a very enjoyable story with lots of twists to keep you interested. I loved the interesting attractions that were in the story. I have never even imagined some of them could exist. And the way the kids used them was really imaginative. And I liked the ending. The teens were well developed and quite believable in their antics. This is definitely a funny story that I would recommend to anyone.
