I have been a fan of this author before, but after finishing this second book in the Half-Lich series, she’s fast becoming a favorite. This book started up fairly close to where the first book left off. Alice is an interesting character, and I really like how the author is telling us her back story a little at a time. I really like Isaac, Jim, and Cameron who are secondary characters and I hope we get to know more about them (maybe their own stories?). This is a 3.5 star. I felt a little lost in this book. I am not sure how long its been since I read book 1 but I needed to refresh myself before getting stuck into this and I didn't have time. I did enjoy reading this despite the inital lost feeling. I still enjoyed the characters and the storyline is still drawing me in. I like Alice, shes a little flighty and a little please save me which is sort of irritating but she does have moments of being a bit kick ass and that redeems her. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I really liked this new installment as it allows us to learn a bit more about the void weavers but more importantly we learn of Isaac past and it's not a easy childhood that he had. This gives us a better understanding of his actions. We also learn more about the system of the mages which is a bit complicated. This story is darker, fast paced but you are caught into the story so it's easy to get lost and forget time. With Nyx on the loose, Alice has gone into hiding after losing her powers and is holed up in a magical safe-house. At the safe-house, we get to meet Cameron, who is one heck of a character. No one knows what Nyx's goal is other than to cause havoc and pain. And that's just what she's doing. Alice struggles to find her powers and learn how to harness them in new ways. Isaac is forced into an otherworldly battle that may cost him his soul. But if he wins, then he will emerge with a new power from a plane no one really knew how to access before. This battle was quite intense, but not in a physical way. Isaac is put to a moral and emotional test that really gives the reader a look into his past and what makes him tick deep inside. All these events will come together in quite a fantastic way. New powers, new factions, and show-down with some really nasty baddies make this book a great read.

Gotta read the fine print. I like the book. I listened to it on audible. Interesting story line. The only thing is that I might have liked it even more if I had realized that it was the second book. It might have made a bit more sense if I had started with the first one.

My first re-read of this since 2016 and it was just as excellent as I remembered. It's just the right level of spooky horror fantasy with the creepy Pain Children and a main character that eats souls along with Katerina's awesome mages in the Ashwood world adding their own creep. Engaging characters, dark story keeps you guessing This is book 2. I rate this book 4 stars. The writing is smart and engaging. The story is not formulaic. The characters are interesting and have flaws. I have both the kindle version and audible version. The narration is good but I found myself turning it off so that I could read faster into the story . This is always the sign of an intriguing book for me. I will be going out to start book 3 tonight and will add these authors to my follow list.

LOVE IT TWO TIMES! I loved the Ashwood Chronicles first book & I loved this one as well. I read it in one day, was almost sad when it was done. But I like the idea that through The Void, a whole new world can be created alongside that of which we are introduced in the crazy reality that is Ashwood. Isaac and Alice have unfinished business and the introduction of Cameron is quite interesting. He's a hot piece of catnip, isn't he? I'm quietly awaiting Halloween for the next release. This author has turned me toward some really creative writers that I really like & am tearing through their books as well. (That's very nice of her!) But there are no books that stand out like The Ashwood Chronicles. I'll give Kat & Lee that designation for sure. It's a whole new creative world they've built where anything can happen... even with a simple, old Polaroid camera. Bring it on, Ashwood!

With each book released, this series gets better and better. This time around we see the fall-out from the encounter in the museum as well as a host of new troubles for Alice and Isaac. Uncaged Book Reviews There is plenty of action in this one, and it doesn’t slow down very often. We also learn more about Alice in this one and her Half-Lich powers, and the new players in this book are very well fleshed out and enhance the story. The main arc is still running, but it didn’t really end on a cliff-hanger. It settles the side arc in this book, but we will need to wait for the last book in the trilogy to see the main story arc complete. See the full review at UncagedBooks.com

Kickass, perfectly written! I had no idea what I was in for with this series but now no other sci-fi fantasy will be able to compare. The eloquent and bold writing transport you into the scenes like no other book or series I have ever read. The gritty, real dialogue is spot on. My favorite author blows my mind once again. Six stars and three thumbs up.
