Thought provoking alternative view of our society The book is written in two versions, one in the style of an Irish-Cherokee woman which has poetry, stories, musings, personal experiences and intuitions. The other conforms more to a form in keeping with the way books “should” be written in the present dominant culture. Both versions have the same content. I found the first version richer and it spoke to me more on some intuitive level. Women find themselves caught in a society that they did not create or like very much, yet they have been complicit in forming it – for various reasons, including fear, no access to power, survival (as they saw it), laziness, or disbelief that they could in any way influence the culture or whatever. In that system the power and influence are held by white males, and white males not only defined who we were, they defined who and what everyone and everything was. And as Eleanor Roosevelt said, “When you adopt the standards and values of someone else – you surrender your own integrity. You become, to the extent of your surrender, less of a human being.” This book is about women – strong, enduring, brilliant, tender, creative, hesitant, assertive, uneasy, rushed, angry, sexual, alive and tired – like we all are. It is an invitation to every woman of whatever race, whatever religion, whatever political persuasion or whatever culture to step up to embrace the responsibilities we have to face to be who we are, the fully functioning persons that we can be to make the contributions only we can make to get this human race of ours back on track at this time in history. Ms Wilson Schaef believes the task before us is immense. For hundreds of years we all have been conditioned and trained by this dominant system. We should overcome our trained belief that this culture is the reality and come to see that there are many realities, and the better we understand them the better odds we have to evolve a living of the process that is our reality and one that is not such a big detour for humanity. This is not a book for a quick, weekend read but something that needs to be read while taking notes and pausing to reflect about what is being written.
