Allen's father was a graduate Of the Sheffield Scientific School in the Class Of 1889, and had brothers at Princeton and cousins and uncles among the Yale alumni. He entered busi ness but soon went into banking in Chicago. His health failed when he was treasurer of a bank, where he worked untiringly, and he had a sudden attack of throat tuberculosis when Allen was less than a year Old. After six months of struggle in Arizona and Colorado, the father died. In him were the quiet courage and self-forgetfulness that his son inherited.
