Regrouping after their escape from the Light Elves, Irewen and her companions fear the worst after black smoke plumes on the horizon. Allowing compassion to rule over reason, they ignore Finnwyn's warning and return to Lilendvelle, hoping to help some of the survivors stranded in the city's wake. Instead, they run into a trap. Completely surrounded by an endless army of Dru Regrouping after their escape from the Light Elves, Irewen and her companions fear the worst after black smoke plumes on the horizon. Allowing compassion to rule over reason, they ignore Finnwyn's warning and return to Lilendvelle, hoping to help some of the survivors stranded in the city's wake. Instead, they run into a trap. Completely surrounded by an endless army of Drulaack, they fight for their lives, but their efforts aren't enough. Irewen is captured and dragged into the heart of the Corrupter's lair. Having his prize, the others in the company are granted their freedom, but at a great cost: the one named in the prophecy who is meant to unite the elf forces and stand against the Corrupter is lost to the world - trapped beneath the Corrupter's talons. With the aid of his mother's spirit, Brendell must now find a way to gather an alliance strong enough to march against the Corrupter and his army, but his time is running out. Each day that passes brings Irewen closer to death. And the world closer to destruction.

This was such a refreshing step out of what I've been reading. I really needed this journey, and I can't recommend it highly enough if you enjoy a broad-sweeping fantasy epic. You get a feisty, relatable heroine, a fantastic accompaniment of engaging and fully developed companion characters, plus a villain you can't help but love to hate... and also relate to... which always feels weird but is a fantastic trick on the part of the author to draw the reader closer in. The objective is not unusual for this kind of story arc - collect a team (army) to stop the darkness from prevailing over the light. It's never that simple, and never ever easy, but the journey is so entertaining to follow. This reminded me a bit of The Shannara Chronicles or The Wheel of Time in all the best ways. You should know going in that this is not a fluffy adventure - dark, terrible things happen to these characters and they are put through some intense trials on their journey. For me, that's kind of the best part of a story like this, but it may not be for everyone. If you enjoy this kind of epic fantasy, this is a great series to add to your list! (Note that this is book three in the series, and you will definitely want to start at the beginning. Start with Silevethiel and then go to The Speaker, then pick this one up!)

A Prophecy Fulfilled is the third and final book in a sweeping, epic fantasy trilogy written in the best tradition of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. O'Connor offers us a magical world a feisty heroine, a company of faithful adventurers and a villain who is at once, completely evil and oddly sympathetic and the action, started in the earlier volumes marches toward the inevitable final battle with a dark determination that picks the reader up and sweeps them along for the ride. This isn't a light-hearted bedtime story for children but if you like dark fantasy where characters suffer and are tested - and sometimes found wanting - you will love this story.
