Bob Nichols –
This is a good, brief overview of the Chaco culture in northwestern New Mexico (roughly, A.D. 850 – 1250). The pictures and text are great. It’s striking how little is known about these people, despite the extensive, remnant ruins. There’s evident sophistication, yet much mystery and speculation. The following statement from the book leaps out: “…Chacoan culture flourished for longer than the United States has existed as a nation.”

A well-written and well-researched concise introduction to the complex history of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, including an overview of the evolution how archeologists study the site and interpret their findings.
