After winning a huge award journalist Mason Rhimes finds himself having some very vivid dreams. Maloney. I wasn't too sure on what the book would really be about and decided to take a risk to see if this would be one I'd like since it was categorized as a mystery/thriller and sci-fi/fantasy and I'm a huge fan of mixed genres in books and wow, I'm glad I did pick this one up. The book starts off going back to 899 A.D. in the middle of what seems like a game of something similar to soccer that ends with a human sacrifice. That beginning certainly grabbed my attention, but then we jump to 2017 to meet Mason with his dreams then onto finding out that there are going be terrorists involved in this plot. All the twists and turns starting out this book may seem a bit jumbled and maybe even a bit random but trust me, in the end this turns into an intricately wound read that I couldn't put down. The world building in the story was excellent giving the reader just enough to want to continue on and find out how everything being introduced could possibly end up being related. Overall, definitely a book that I would recommend checking out, an amazing debut and would look forward to reading more by this author. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. For more reviews please visit https://carriesbookreviews.wordpress....

His thrilling journey takes him to a small town that not everything or everyone is what it seems, learning that the curse he has been trying to hide might be the only way to have the country. There are three different perspectives in the book that complete this plot. The reader is taken on a journey through a world that isn't always open to the things that aren't physical or logically explained. The tone of this book reflects the rocking path of discovering and accepting the darkest parts of yourself by going deep inside your heart and by reaching out to other people. The struggle of the main character throughout the narrative is deep and truly shows how people deal with the ups and downs of life differently. The title has very well chosen for this narrative. It's an essential part for the understanding of the old Mayan civilisation and its beliefs but also a very creative way to show that what goes around, comes around. The book is well written and the depth of the knowledge in criminal mind, the spiritual and the dream world, and the understanding of the human psychology is outstanding. I particularly appreciated the detailed description of the meaning of the dreams, which ties up perfectly with the rest of the events. I could definitely relate to the pain caused by death can bring a type of wisdom that allows people to change, appreciate life more knowing that time is limited and should be used wisely. All in all, it's a clever and refreshing debut and I can't wait to see that comes next from Maloney.

It took me a little while to get into the book, but by the end, I enjoyed it. At first, I just didn't see how, when or where all the different plots were going to add up and make sense, but they did. The ending wasn't what I expected and it did feel a bit abrupt, but I liked it anyway. The main characters, Claire and Mason (love the names) were believable and sweet. I was rooting for them the whole way. It took me a little while to get into the book, but by the end, I enjoyed it. This debut novel from this author has multiple plots intricately interwoven to create a story with many twists and turns which once your interest is captured, you find that you can't put the book down.
