The underlying theme of TAKE A PIECE OF MY HEART reminds us that we each deserve a life free of violence, and the author includes information to domestic abuse hotline at the end.

So on Sunday I received an email asking me to review a book. I get this request from time to time. Some of the books I really try to read, some I have to try and start again because I get so lost in the plot I have no idea what is going on. My favorite is romance/suspense or contemporary romance and certain paranormal romance I can get into. When I review books I do not like to give (spoilers) away much because that does not let the future readers to enjoy the experience. I loved this book. (I think that is the term) LOL. This book had me laughing out loud and freaking out yelling at the characters because you knew they didn't get it yet what you the reader had already figured out. So good! This book takes some hard topics and situations and deals with them in a real way that people today deal with relationships. I am going to break one of my rules and just mention no names but the little girl in this book, I loved her so much. (You all are not getting anything else from me) This book had me with goose bumps in a good way right until the very last word on the page. This is a light read, funny, real and insightful. This being this author’s first book it was a very nice surprise. The book itself read differently than most which was refreshing. It does have some tough subjects but real life feel. I really hope the author does a second book or more on the series because I am now wondering about the other characters in the novel and how their stories unfold. I recommend this book. I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to many more books from Diane Duffy. Thanks Tamara [email protected]

Gift from the author for an honest review I really enjoyed this story. This is a story about heartache, betrayal, second chances and more. I was hooked from the beginning of the story. Some parts I just wanted to smack people on the head and say "what's wrong with you". I believe the author knows how to draw you into a book and keep you reading. You won't get confused or wonder what happens to people as you find out everything in the book. Overall this is a love romance book and something that happens in life, may not be you but there are others that it has happened too. Great job to the author.

This book has a really different narrative style. Took a bit for me to fall into the rhythm, but once I got into it, the voice was fun. The heroine is real and rough around the edges, but she charms you into pulling for her. There were times it felt like the story was veering off the path, and then at a certain point you realize that it all ties together and comes around to make sense. The ending has a nice twist and is satisfying. This author could have taken some easy, cliché outs, and I like This book has a really different narrative style. What started out as innocent teenage lust and love, turns dark when her husband starts beating her on a regular basis. Like most women in a domestic violence situation, she believes herself to be trapped, even though others try to help her escape. Kara finally reaches her breaking point and escapes her abusive husband. From there, her story twists and turns as she waits for the divorce to happen and when she meets a new guy, who doesn’t beat her, but leaves her emotionally abandoned. Like the ex-husband, he takes some of her heart as well, but also gives her a gift she thought no longer possible. Without giving too much away, because one should read it, Kara finds the one person that takes the biggest piece of her heart and she freely, yet wisely this time, gives it away. I really enjoyed the fast paced, fun, yet emotional ride the author takes you on in this novel. I was also pleased with the awareness that the novel brought to domestic violence without making Kara too much of a victim that ended up sealing up her heart for good. The fact that she overcame and thrived was refreshing to see. My one main criticism would be to show me, don’t tell me. There were several fabulous set ups that the opportunity to show me what was going on as opposed to just telling me were lost. The main section of domestic violence would have had that much more of an impact if it had played out as a scene utilizing all of the senses instead of Kara’s narrative of it. First person POV works here, but there were times were I felt like Kara rambled. I felt as though I were at my salon getting my hair done and Kara was my hairdresser. Fun to listen to for a while, but after a bit, the nonstop chattering wore thin. I was glad to see that the further along the story went, the more dialogue we had to break up the constant narrative. Aside from the one point, I enjoyed this debut novel. Diane Duffy has enormous potential and we’ve only seen the beginning of it. I can’t wait to see what else she comes out with and I will be picking it up when it goes on sale.

I found “Take a Piece of My Heart” by Diane Rose Duffy to be an almost true story of what happens to a young girl like Kara, who’s too young to really understand the true meaning of love. Before long she discovers the truth of what the adorable man she’d married is truly like, and the happy ever after she once thought she’d get is merely is now a nightmare no woman wants to be in. Not only did the cad she married take a piece of her; he took quite a lot more from her. I believe her husband had taken almost everything from her, everything that is except for her will to survive and her determination to find solace somewhere far away from him. This is a story any woman who’s in an abusive relationship and has been able to escape from can relate to. Once Kara leaves her husband she gets on a roller coaster of emotions like any another woman who has lived through the same ordeal. While I usually find 50+ chapters a bit excessive for a novel of this length; however, Ms. Duffy skillful use this number of chapters to her first outing as an author, makes it like a diary of Kara’s existence with her husband, from when they first met, through her horrific life with him, her escape, to the journey in which she finds the happy ever after she has search so long for. It’s too bad I can only give this book 5 STARS, as it deserves more. My husband kept giving me side-eyes because I would burst out laughing from the humor that was packed within the pages! Although the book may be classified as a romantic contemporary comedy, I appreciated it so much more because of the underlying issue in the book. The issue of overcoming domestic violence. Kara was like a little butterfly trapped in her cocoon, the metamorphosis withheld. For a chunk of her adult life, she had experienced so much pain and did not live. My heart ached for her. But when she grew her wings, boy, did she fly! I absolutely loved the book and highly recommend it to everyone! Bravo, Ms. Duffy! I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Diane Rose Duffy!

Take A Piece of My heart, is the story of Kara, who marries, as a teenager, her bad boy, Danny (we all have had one in our past) only to find how damaging her mistake was. Ms. Duffy did an excellent job in bringing the issue of domestic violence to the readers attention. Although not graphic, you feel the tense moments as Kara experiences them. Kara is one spunky woman BUT most of all, she's a survivor of life's hard lessons. I, as a reader, not only felt as if I knew her as an old friend, I cheered her bravery and determination every step of her journey. A must read!

Along the way she also finds support in the form of characters who, though realistically flawed, add to her journey and certainly add to the story. With a touch of humour and unusual plot, A Piece of my heart is a very powerful debut from a promising author. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes fiction with a touch of class and realism.

In the beginning I was a little torn with how I felt about this book. I don't know if I really liked the writing style, where it felt like the main character Kara was talking to the reader. I like how the book was broken into different titles rather than numbered chapters. Once Kara met Mitch, that's where I really enjoyed the book. I loved all the supporting characters, especially little Sadie. This was my first book from this author and I def look forward to reading more.

“Take a Piece of My Heart” has been an unexpected read. Books that you find on the “Romance” shelf tend to be quite linear and predictable and frankly I’m not much into that. One of my favorite lines...by Kara was "That may not be the conventional way of doing things, but there isn't much about our family that is traditional... so we do things our way." Love that!!!! Take a Piece of my Heart is a special novel. It tackles the issues of spousal abuse and what constitutes a loving relationship. Kara is a battered wife who chooses to find a way out, even though that way isn’t easy. During her odyssey she meets many supportive people and falls in love more than once. After reading some heavy readings for the last few weeks, Take A Piece of My Heart is like a refreshing to my brain. The one that I love the most is the characters and the conversations which flow smoothly and naturally. The author does a great job in describing things and creating plots. All I can say is that I am a slow reader, but it took me less than a week to finish this reading. In other words, it didn't bore me. I like the way this author writes--very conversational, like a BFF relaying the details of her life, which has a lot of ups and downs. She is quite funny, and--spoiler alert--there is a strip search scene that will have readers rolling-on-the-ground laughing. There is a serious bent to the story as well, in the form of a very important and timely topic: spousal abuse. And there is a love story--but an unconventional one, with some nice twists. An enjoyable read!

The author gives a story that could be from any one of our families or friends with serious issues. Abuse is never easy for those that have to live it. I would have to say the author hit the action and reaction of the characters dead on. There is a lot going on and is pretty much a fast pace listen. The author gives a great story on overcoming obstacles as the main character finds her place in life. This is a very complicated read from the men that come in her life, I would have to say Kara life could have been so much worse and taken a different road if she didn’t have the support of one major outstanding friend. Getting out of her abusive relationship was a lot easy for her than it is for most in the real world. Not saying this takes away from the story at all just stating a fact. I was glad to see her get out and not have to hard of a time starting over. First let me talk about what I liked about this story. It is a story that most of us can relate to, Danny has control issues. He cuts her off from everyone which is normal for this type of relationship. It is normal for most abused people to stay in that relationship for many years with many never getting out. I found this to be believable and dead on. Rebound relationships are normal as well when you are in an abuse relationship you usually fall for the first man who treats you with respect. For me this made the story more real and one I could relate to. The author does give you some very serious issues which I thought she handled with a pretty good style. The characters are likable even Danny turned out to be ok, I still didn’t care for him and he still needs some major work but he is a topical man promising or doing things to change your mind to get you back. In most cases it would never have lasted I like that Kara saw that. Forgiveness is hard when you are in this type of relationship I was proud of Kara for giving hers but standing her ground. Mitch was a sweetheart that I did adore and I understood him. I was a little pushed on feeling sorry for him with him being gone so long and never being upfront to what he truly wanted but he was still a wonderful man that gives so much to this story. DJ in my book was the best character of all his character (except for his daughter) was the most grown up of them all. He always put others first even when he might not have wanted to. Kara was a funny lady at times and I could relate to her. My heart went out to her many times as she works her way through each event the best way she knew how. This is pretty much a clean read there is passion and there is sex but it isn’t thrown in your face. I like this change from time to time. I adored DJ’s daughter and loved the things that came out for mouth. For me she made this story a fun and loving read. I loved the humor popping up when you didn’t expect it I even adored the best friend and how she pushed Kara. I really liked Mitch’s sister and her way of stirring up things. The funniest parts for me was when Mitch and Kara went to bed the first time now that was funny along with DJ’s daughter being a normal child saying or asking what she wanted to know. Things I didn’t like were you never got to really know each character since the story is only from Kara point of view. It feels more like memoires with Kara more or less telling a friend or person the story of her life. The author never let the other person talk or not that much you never got their thoughts or feelings. Kara really had no class along with a pout mouth but then I guess most of us do if we think things in our minds that never come out of our mouths. For me this is how the book came across and this was more like Kara was reliving her life in her thoughts not really a story. There were things she said that I just do not see women saying. This next part is just ME and what I like or do not like in no way does it reflect on the author. I do not like title chapters for me that just takes away from the read. I felt there was something that could have been left out that would have made this a much better read. Some parts the author tried to be funny but for me it didn’t come across that way when at other times I really laughed. What it boils down for me is this was so one side that you never really got to know some wonderful characters. Jennifer Bossio I thought did a pretty good job of narration. She did put emotion in the read at times I thought it was a little off but all in all she did not do a bad job. Towards the end she did put some character voices in but for me that throw me off since it was not done throughout the whole story. She did make the book more interesting for me and in my book much better than if I would have read it. When Kara was mad you knew it, if she was sad well you knew that as well, lord when she got excited the narrator hit those tones well. I would listen to more audios this narrator has worked on, I feel most of what I didn’t care for was not due to the narrator but more of the style the author gave in it being more one sided view and more of Kara thoughts than a normal story would have been. The audio its self there were times you could tell the narrator had stopped and came back. The pitch of her voice was either higher or lower than it was before. At times I am not sure if it was background noise or it was an echo that I heard. It really didn’t made a big difference just one you will notice if you listen more to the audio than the story being told. I am really torn on this book it has a lot of great scenes even places where I either laughed out loud or chuckled. It was one that for the most part I enjoyed it isn’t one I would want to listen to again for the reasons given above I am giving this a 3.5 star. I feel this author has great Potential and gives a good plot. She is an author I will be checking back with to watch her development and grow as an author.

**I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review** Writing: 3 *** I appreciated the unique voice of the author. It was conversational and engaging at first, but I started to get somewhat annoyed by the constant euphemisms. It was conversational and engaging at first, but I started to get somewhat annoyed by the constant euphemisms. Man-junk, hunky delicious, titty tantrum, titty baby, hunka hunka, diddley whacker, to name just a few. I don't mind that randomly in dialogue, but those words were littered throughout the narrative as well. It's strange, but I felt that the book could have used more dialogue, while the narrative sounded too much like dialogue. There was a lot of telling what was happening, versus showing. Like I said, the author writes in a conversational manner, much like sitting down with a friend and chatting, but after a while, I just felt like I was being talked at. I never lost the "author", because her style of writing narrative was an ever present character in the book, so I never lost myself in the story. There are also issues with past and present tense verbs used in the same sentence, as well as words used wrong - omit vs emit, milling vs mulling, leotards vs tights, coup vs coop, inputted vs deposited, walla vs viola, Quantomeno vs Guantanamo, everiridescent vs I have no idea what word should have gone there. So some editing issues, but overall, it wasn't horrible. Characters: 3 *** I did not love the main character. She's a fire cracker for sure, outspoken, and quite likable, but she never seemed to grow much. She's one of those friends you can only take in small doses. Her behavior much of the time, was that of a fifteen year old girl, but her way of speaking was that of a woman in her fifties, not a thirty year old. It was difficult to connect with her. Her views toward other cultures smacked of narrow-minded stereotypes. She had some really good moments, though, like when she and her friend anonymously donated a $300 gift card to a person in need. I also had a hard time reading about her thoughts regarding a woman who was clearly suffering from post-partum depression. "Neither Krista or I had the lady balls to go anywhere near that scary she-devil", and "I told you she was a raving bitch. Holy Cow, the doctor should have given her a hormone boost or something". Ouch. Also when her current man confronts her about kissing her ex, "[he] is not only being very bitchy, but he is acting like a big baby" and continues to call him a "titty baby". Instead of acknowledging others' emotions, she only wanted them to see her side and have them tell her it was okay. Granted, she eventually sees she is in the wrong with both situations (sorta), but she overall lacked empathy for people in general and behaved in a self-centered manner. I really just wish she would have taken time to grow as an individual instead of jumping from one relationship to the next. Plot: 4 **** I enjoy the idea of a woman leaving an abusive husband, and making her own road. The DJ plot twist was good. Unputdownable Factor: 3 *** After a while, I had to force myself to keep reading. Dialogue: 4 **** This is where the author really shines. The dialogue was engaging and funny. I know it may sound contradictory after reading my remarks on the writing. If the writing were stronger, this may have been closer to a four star read for me. Overall: 3.4 Stars! Favorite Quote: "If a relationship has cracks, it's going to break regardless of who steps into the picture. A relationship consists of those two people, and they alone will determine the destiny of that union."

What a breath of fresh air! I could not put my kindle down because I was so caught up in the mind of Kara. This was an amazing debut book, and I am so honored to have read it. I was pulled in right from the start. I enjoyed the humor that Kara had even when her world was crumbling around her. This book pulls at your heartstrings so much. You find yourself wanting to reach in and hug her as she tries to live in the day to day life she feels stuck in. This story deals with the subject of domestic abuse. The author did a wonderful job letting us into the mind of a woman that has stayed strong her whole life under the hands of the ones that were supposed to love her. "I was raised in an abusive home and married an abusive spouse. It was all I'd ever known." The charcter of Kara will always hold a piece of my heart. As the story unfolds and she takes charge of her life for the first time, you cheer her on and want to keep pushing her forward. You watch her become the woman she always knew she could be, but was afraid to. "I am a firm believer that when one chapter closes in your life, another will begin. I am determined that this chapter beginning will lead me to what I have been searching for. My hopes are for a bright light at the end of this long, dark tunnel." But don't think this story is all heartbreaking and sad, because it is far from it. Yes, there are moments that make you want to shed a tear or two, but overall it's just a story of discovery. I loved the way Kara's mind worked. How she brought humor into everything and how blunt she was. I could see her being my friend! My favorite part about this book is when her past meets her present. I'm not telling secrets because you should read it for yourself;) But let me tell you, it's a perfect circle in the twisted life Kara was given. True love is always worth the wait. This book was everything I thought it would be and more! Overcoming abuse is not easy, but there is always someone out there to help. Kara found out that there is a light at the end of that dark tunnel. Wonderful debut novel!!! Can't wait to read more from Diane Rose Duffy!! "Family is where the heart is."

I set it down and picked it up numerous times before I finally made myself sit still and finish reading it. The voice of the novel is conversational and for some, this can cause a problem, as well as Ms. Duffy’s constant use of euphemisms and occasional wrong usage of words and misspellings. The main character is not perfect and at times makes horrible decisions, BUT I’m glad I finished this novel. Despite all its flaws, and let’s be honest, no book is completely perfect, I enjoyed reading Ms. Duffy’s debut novel. Take a Piece of My Heart shines the light on an issue that many times is ignored by the public and is hard to escape by the victims. Kara, the main character, is a woman trapped in the cycle of domestic violence—her mother was a victim in her marriage and now her. From the moment she said, “I do,” at the tender age of 19, her relationship with her “James Dean” like beau slowly turned to one of violence. Danny’s (her husband) violence was sporadic and not an everyday occurrence but it was still hard and painful. After the hits and beatings, he would be remorseful and make promise after promise of it being ‘the last time,’ but those promises were never kept. Thru the years, Kara suffered physical pain and heavy heartache, at times she would see the young man she fell in love with in his eyes, so she stayed. Thru it all, she remained until finally, she reached her breaking point. After gaining the courage to pack her belongings and finally escape, she embarks on a journey full of twists and turns. She knows it’s up to her to put the pieces of her broken life back together. Luckily, she had a very strong support system in Debbie, Mitch (but afterwards he disappointed me), and DJ, she discovers the true meaning of love, friendship, and family. You will find yourself laughing, getting angry and annoyed, feeling pity and sadness, and falling in love. This novel is more than a romance, it is a story about a woman and her strength to change her life. Kara will experience many things and will realize the importance of perfect timing. Her journey is not perfect, it is a bit unconventional and you sometimes want to slap her because of her decision-making, but in the end, she does get her HEA.

Kara stood by her husband through thick and thin and tried her hardest to make the marriage work, but finally Kara realized that it wasn't going to change and that she wasn't happy and she moved on. I love that the author portrayed Kara as a "real" person. She wasn't super model skinny, she didn't have the best job, she wasn't super wealthy - she was real and she was relatable to the reader. The reader felt as if they could be friends with Kara, meet her at the bank where she worked and that Kara had a personality. I love the fact that she had her friend Debbie who made her jump out of her comfort zone and I enjoyed the fact that fate played a part in Kara's life. The chemistry between Kara and Dave in the story really showed and it made a comeback later on in the story. The author was able to weave the story in a way that had the reader laughing, crying, cheering and at times angry. I love how Mitch was portrayed and how Kara's dreams did come true, even when it didn't seem like they were going to. The author took us on a curvy, looping, twisty road that had surprise after surprise to keep the readers on their toes! I love when a book seems like it is going to be predictable and then the author surprises them with plot twists that no one could have seen coming. This story is a fun, entertaining read but it also offers a different take on the way in which someone can be abused and re-take their lives back. Kara is an amazing character and each character, no matter how much you want to dislike them (Danny), will leave you smiling. Add this book to your TBR list and you won't be sorry! It will be in your top 20 list in no time and you will think about these characters and their situations long after you finish reading the book! Enjoy!! ***Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official. For more information regarding our reviews please visit our Fansite: www.facebook.com/NerdGirl.ng ***

Unlike many women in this position, Kara has a relatively easy landing, yet she continues to execute less-then-sound judgement in men and relationships. Eventually, she lands in a very non-traditional relationship and blended family with the best friend of her baby daddy and his extended family. The premise of Take A Piece of My Heart is sound, but the characters didn't grab me. I just couldn't find much reason to like or empathize with them. Kara tells her story as if she is talking at the reader. While some people find this charming like they're having coffee with a neighbor, I felt like I was stuck on a long flight with a seat mate who would not stop talking at me. That is just a personal preference--I'm not big on movie characters talking to the audience either (although it worked for Ferris Bueller). Adding in more dialogue and more vivid descriptions would add much to the readers experience. The characters are equally developed. Kara is rather inarticulate and foul-mouthed but with interesting phraseology: "Walla there he is" instead of "Voila, there he is", "Quantomeno Bay" instead of "Guantanamo Bay" and "...last time I checked, I had boobies so that does make me a girl...". The first couple phrases might have been intentionally used to show how the character pronounced the words. The male characters (even bottom-feeder ex-husband Danny--once sober), had coherent, articulate dialogue when given a chance to speak. Young Sadie is a kick in the pants whose stream-of-consciousness dialogue is always the unfiltered truth as she sees it. With an injection of descriptive details and meaningful dialogue, Take A Piece of My Heart could be a grade-A novel about overcoming domestic violence. I'm looking forward to reading more by Diane Rose Duffy as she develops her craft. I received a complimentary copy book in exchange for an honest review. Once I began reading Take a Piece of My Heart, I simply could not stop. I was completely hooked from page one. Without a doubt, Duffy is the Queen of snark and the High Priestess of sass! The story is exciting, intelligent, original, sensitive, humorous, well developed, heartwarming, romantic and sensual. The dialogue is witty, sassy, snarky, smart, well written, flows effortlessly and laugh out loud funny. The characters are captivating, engaging, endearing, relatable and at times, down right hilarious. Ms Duffy expertly combines these elements to craft a fabulously entertaining story of one woman's journey to break a long ingrained cycle of self degradation and abuse, free her heart and begin her quest to find hope, happiness, forgiveness, love, and family. This story is told in the first person by the main character of the story, Kara Salinger Morino, a snarky, intelligent although quite naive young woman. Kara is raised in a loveless, abusive home and as a result, has no understanding of love. As in so many cases, Kara's life continues its downward spiral when she meets and marries badboy biker Danny Morino. And unfortunately for Kara, it doesn't take long for Danny's abusive side to rear its ugly head. And for thirteen long years Kara remains in Danny's web of lies and abuse. But never fear, an awakening is on the horizon and the lioness is born! I am woman, hear me roar! And the journey of a self discovery begins! Hands down, one of the funniest and most powerfully compelling books I've ever read. The subject of abuse is handled with sensitivity and respect blended with the perfect combination of snark and humor. I laughed, I cried and then laughed some more! Brilliantly done! Ms. Duffy is a diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered! I highly recommend this novel! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Don't get me wrong, it was funny at some parts, and at other times I wholeheartedly sympathized with Kara, but something nags at me from a little before the halfway point in this book. This most likely is because I'm biased because of my heritage, but I dislike it when I come across racial stereotypes or when I read something that comes off as derogatory when talking about different ethnic groups. I just want to say that it probably wasn't intentional, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. And that's all I will say on that matter. As for the rest of the book, I enjoyed reading about Kara's experience with internet dating and the ups and downs of her relationships. However, at the beginning of this book, dialogue was almost non-existent. I like it when I read dialogue between characters and descriptions of what they do and how they interact with each other. It was a while before anything like that happened, and the beginning of the book is mostly narrative. The book does get better afterward, but descriptive words would have made many scenes pop out and make an impact on the reader. I felt I was being told instead of actually feeling like I was there. Kara manages to escape her horrible situation and marriage fairly unscathed, and didn't act how I thought she would; she didn't really display behaviors that I have come to associate with victims of abuse. However, I have never been in that kind of situation, so this is only my opinion. If there had been a bit more description and dialogue in the beginning, this could have been a 4 Platypire book. I have no doubt that the author can improve and will be on the lookout for more of her work to see her progress. I give Take a Piece of My Heart 3.5 Platypires.
