More 3.5 stars than 3. I read a lot of the original comics back in the day and I remember how I thought the whole non-team idea was sort of interesting. I appreciated how the Hulk was such a tentative member of the group being drawn by his supposed friendship/identification with the Submariner while continually being annoyed by Doctor Strange speaking down to him and always telling him what to do. The other characters (i.e., the Silver Surfer and the Valkyrie) were interesting guest heroes, though the ending of the Surfer's involvement was a bit weird as it seemed like they could have tried again to free him from Galactus's prison. The 'origin' of the 'then' Valkyrie was interesting, though it seems the Norse gods seem to have a bit of thing for creating super-powered beings with their magic on a whim. Anyway, this one's probably one for the completists as there's been a lot of water under the bridge in the Marvel universe for all these characters.

The team of lone warriors or the un-team a brilliant piece from Marvel with all teams or family (as in the FF) there will be in house bickering, ego flaring, sexism especially from the early comics but when you get Doctor Strange bringing together Namor-The Sub-Mariner once Atlantean ruler and with a rock star ego to boot and the green giant that is The Hulk nothing but sparks can fly. This book shows their first outings with glimpses of one of the other main "members" The Silver Surfer. But also each comic for once is linked even subtle wise to the ones before all up to and including bringing a new member, a new Valkyrie which adds a new depth and angle to the male world of The Defenders and the final fight to save the world from utter destruction.

Whilst Roy Thomas is writing The Defenders it’s great; of course getting Doctor Strange, Sub-Mariner and the Hulk together is contrived but it’s immense fun with satanic covens, demons, nuclear destruction and an alien pied piper and a pair of possessed astronauts attempting to kidnap America’s children through the medium of TV.
